Quick Misc Thoughts and Sounds….
I have a “belly buddy”. Guess what Zander meant. {g}
(Pounding on the door while Jared (12) takes a shower) “Jared, turn the water OFF – you’re wasting water!”
We’ve progressed to the point with Zander that he can now reason. Formerly, if you’d tell him not to do something or to do something you’d have a huge meltdown. We skipped the whole “why” stage. Yesterday I asked him to leave something alone. He said in a very respectful, inquisitive voice, “why”. I explained that “Grandpa gave that to Mommy and it is very special to her” and he said “Oh, ok ” and left it alone. Progress.
We’ve been busy getting ready to leave town.
We’ve also been busy with the seasonal aspects of the church calendar. Wed we had a Passover dinner. Thursday Mike was in “The Living Last Supper” and we all attended. Today there is a 3:00 service at the base as well as a showing of *The Passion of Christ* at the chapel.
I’ll update more later today.
I would have liked to go to last night's Last Supper Mass but I was feeling too lousy after cryosurgery.
ReplyDeleteI would love to hear more about your 3pm service today; I didn't realize that was a tradition outside of the Catholic and Episcopal churches...
Renee,
ReplyDeleteI think this depends on the protestant "flavor" of church you attend. It was not common in my background to have Good Friday services.
However, a base chapel has a wide diversity...from high church to low church....or from Episcopalian to Charismatic....and every base we've been at has had a Good Friday Service. I'm hearing of more and more Protestant churches doing the same.
Our service focuses on the crucifixion and the great gift that is available to us because of the obedience of Christ. There was a Scripture reading, message and hymns centering on that.
The Living Last Supper was beautiful...I should write on that seperately. I really enjoyed it. We had communion at the end of that.
On Easter a.m. there is traditionally a sunrise service and breakfast. Each Protestant service will have their own service as well.
I was disappointed that we didn't do Lenten lunches here...but really considering the size of our parish I'm very impressed at all we have done to celebrate. For instance, even at larger chapels, I've never seen a passover as authentic as this one was nor the Living Last Supper.

Ok I was right in thinking that your church upbringing didn't typically have services on Good Friday.
ReplyDeleteIn many ways it sounds similar to the Catholic service on Good Friday (it's the one day of the year that there is no Mass). Although I wasn't there as I was recovering from cryosurgery but James was there as he was serving.
Our parish is having a Sunrise Mass this year... but we are going to 8am (James is serving and Abigail is cantoring).
Back in Korea we had Friday evening soup suppers (meatless soups and bread)... at our parish here in FL we had Friday fish fry and pizza dinners.....(but not on Good Friday)....
I will probably be an honorary member of PWOC this fall since Garmisch doesn't have MCCW
