Dear Mr. President
Occasionally, the kids and I find a library find for school that we enjoy so much we want to share it. Arielle, Nolan and I just finished reading *Dear Mr. President: Abraham Lincoln Letters from a Slave Girl (Dear Mr. President Series)* by Andrea Davis Pinkney, yesterday.
As the title suggests this book is centered around fictional letters between Lettie, a slave-girl in SC, and President Lincoln. The book clearly brings out the struggle that A. Lincoln faced with defining what actions he would take on slavery. I did find the book to be implausible (a young girl corresponding with the President during a time of war) but it was an effective way to give our young ones an overview ofthe Civil War period.
The Children's Blizzard

I found parts of this book to be “slow” reading; but I’m glad I persevered through until the storm hit.
This book traces the big blizzard on January 13, 1888, that came to be known as “The Children’s Blizzard” because so many children were sent home from school and died in the storm.
I loved the way the author went back to the original home places of the characters in the story and showed WHY these families had left Norway, Germany, Sweden, Russia etc to settle on the American Plains. I was able to identify with this book and its story as we’ve ministered in a farming/ranching community in MT where the old-timers had stories of blizzards and such like this one. It was also fun to pause and think of the Russian/German families we met while living on the plains and the stories they told from this time-period.
This book tied in incredibly well with our study on the western-expansion of America. I even found mention of Laura Ingalls Wilder in the book. I think that anyone who is interested in this time period of history, weather, or even medical differences between the 19th and 21st century, will enjoy reading this book.
Thanks to members of Support4HomeSchool for adding this book to my reading list….now if I can get to the other 50 or so books on the list. {G}
Monday – 27 Feb
Mike was given Monday and Tuesday off. These are sort of “reward” days for all the 14-18 hour days he’s put in over the last two months. {G}
It is nice to have him around home. He slept in. We got started on school. He went for a run, got dressed and went to base for a retirement ceremony. The problem with being military is that you, or those you form relationships with, are constantly moving. Tim H. has been the boy’s (youth) Sunday School teacher since we got here. They formed a strong relationship and respect for each other during the Christmas Play Preparations. The high school youth were in charge of the play and Josiah (being the oldest) was named the leader of the pack. {G} Josiah, Jamin and Jared drove up to base to attend the retirement ceremony as well.
I held down the fort with the little ones. I had quite a bit of extra time to be in the Word and in prayer today. That was great.
The day ended with Mike, Stacia and I attending Tim’s retirement dinner at Zentners. It was fun to have some adult socializing time. Retirements are always bitter-sweet. This is a good one, in that Tim already has a job lined up and is moving “seamlessly” into the civilian workforce. Most military members earn two retirements (military and civilian) before their “true retirement”.
It sure doesn’t look like we did much today but I’m exhausted! {g}I guess some days are like this. Oh, received notice that two more of my books have been requested on Paperback Swap….that means I can order two more free books. {G} I also wrote the March edition of our women’s ministry (PWOC) newsletter in the early a.m.
Josiah arrived home safely....closes again tomorrow night.

Speaking of Josiah
....he was supposed to work 6 - 10 p.m. tonight...it's 10:45....where is that young man? Poor kid is going to be one tired puppy in the a.m.
Weekend Summary
Mike had a day off. I mean he REALLY had a day off. We weren’t sure what to do with it.
It RAINED – thundered even – Friday night and Saturday morning so the Paint Ball Birthday Bash was called. We’ve re-scheduled for next Saturday. Josiah has confirmed that he will have Saturday morning off.
As the day wore on it became gorgeous! We ended up driving to a new park while Josiah went to work. We finally FOUND water. After days of looking for the way to get to the causeway some of us were dismayed by the “boundary”
and some of us found a way over the “boundary”.
This city park had a discus golf course, archery field, numerous play grounds, paths, camping areas and all along the side of WATER. It was great.
We saw numerous armadillos.
Once we saw a road runner with an armadillo but we weren’t quick enough to get a picture. I, of course, am wondering if the reemergence of all these animals means that the SNAKES are waking up as well.
The guys threw around a football.
The younger kids played with Nolan’s radio control jeep.
But the high-point or low-point of our afternoon came on the playground! A 4 yo shot the van. I can't believe it. His father knew he had a b-b gun on the playground but said, "he don't never shoot people or things". He told his dad he was aiming at the tree in front of the van...but he told Nolan - "look - this is cool I can shoot that van" and before Nolan could say a word....I was IN the van...thank God he missed the window.....hit my door. Shot in a CITY PARK!!!!
Of course this became THE news at chapel on Sunday. One fellow suggested Mike could collect “hazardous duty pay” in Tom Green County. We’ll have to get estimates this week and hopefully will be able to reach this family to pay for the repairs.
Sunday, Mike and I began team teaching a study on the book of Philippians. Last Sunday, Mike had asked me to do an overview of the Inductive Study Method. I did. We are using the New Inductive Study Series from Precept Ministries. They take just 15 – 30 minutes a day. They are definitely a survey but great fun to use in a Sunday School class. No one who attended this week, had done an inductive study before so it was fun to hear their reactions. One lady said she was surprised at how things begin to pop out at you…obviously a comment I LOVED to hear. {g}
We are so glad that Josiah is working for a company that is closed on Sunday. He is really enjoying his work. We spent the rest of the day hanging out at the house. I had the flu thing going on and went to bed. Mike and the boys installed the weather station; we’re all prepared for some “weather” now. {G}

FASTING - Isaiah 58
Today many women begin a 2 day fast for marriage; some are beginning a one day fast today or tomorrow. I believe that God is delighting in our hearts as we do battle not only for our personal benefits but for “marriage” in general.
I can not do this text on fasting justice in this space….but here are a FEW thoughts. {G} This is an example of Israel’s fasting – the good and the ugly. There is much we can learn from their example. Take joy Ladies, in the fact that we serve a God who carries our burdens and is in the business of restoration. May you see this time as the start of repairing breaches in the institution of marriage and in our culture’s value of marriage.
Is. 58:1-5 – Israel had fasted and God had not heard. Why? They were fasting for “their desire” (v3), they fasted with “contention and strife” (v4) they were fasting to be noticed and congratulated by men (vs. 5). God is about HEART.
Is 58:6 – 7 – God’s Chosen Fast
Fast to:
Loose the bonds of wickedness (vs. 6)
Undo heavy burdens (bonds of the yoke, stop exploiting employees)(6)
Let the oppressed go free (vs. 6)
Break every yoke (cancel debts) (vs. 6)
OUR HEARTS ARE CHANGED (vs. 7)
Bless the poor and homeless rather than exploit them
Is 58:8-12 - Results from God’s Chosen Fast:
Revelation (vs. 8)
Healing and personal restoration, Recovery (vs. 8.11)
Righteousness (vs. 8)
Protection (vs. 8) the glory of the Lord be your rear guard
Guidance (vs. 9,11)
Spiritual strength (vs. 9-11)
Satisfy our new desires, even in scorched places (vs 11)
Rebuild the ancient ruins (vs 12)
Raise Up old foundations (vs. 12)
Be called “Repairer of the Breach” (vs. 12)
“Restorer of the Streets” (vs. 12)

FRIDAY – 24 February
Hmmm, a quick summary of the day?
We did school.
We tried to feed Stacia.
We watched in amazement as Stacia rolls from one end of the house to another.
We continued toilet training….began THIS week and the only accident has been with BM.
I drove Josiah to work.
I dropped off Jamin and Jared to help a new friend move into their home…about a mile away.
I began figuring out what I want to order for our produce co-op this time.
Mike arrived home from work and went to help with the move. I picked Josiah up from work and took him to help with the move. What a wonderful way for MEN to get together while doing something meaningful. I’d met both these women at the park in January and was glad that Mike was meeting their husbands.
I baked two more freshly-milled, whole-grained door-stops. Tastes great – didn’t rise. I have more grain and yeast etc coming in a co-op order on Monday. I knew the yeast was very old (since AK) but I am too stubborn to go buy more when I know I have new yeast coming. {G}
I baked three home-made pizzas. I discovered that Arielle, Nolan and Zander don’t LIKE home-made pizza….they’ll adjust.
The guys made it home. They set up the screen and projector and we watched a bit more Hogan’s Heroes. I keep falling asleep by the time they get these going so I’ll be able to enjoy them for months to come…while they are clamoring for the “next season”.
I continued to make plans for transitioning us to the Feingold program in an attempt to help Zander minimize or maximize those things which need adjusting. {g} We used this program for a couple of years and it really helped Jamin. You can read more about it here. We are already on a sort of “modified Feingold” so it may not be too difficult to change. Yeah right….it is the YOUNGER THREE who are such junk-food addicts and so it will take a bit of work…but with all the fresh produce around here and the thrill of helping to grind grains…maybe I can lure them in. {G}

YUCK
You are receiving this email because you indicated your desire to participate in a fast for marriage on 26/27 Feb, or you indicated that you were still praying about doing so. If you receive this and you did NOT email to participate *I* have not emailed this to you. Ladies, please do NOT forward this letter on to others. I assured ladies that their requests would only go to those who emailed me with their intention to fast. Text without requests will also be posted on my blog.
Dear Friends,
Wow. I’m amazed at God. What an experience it has been to call my dear sisters in Christ to fast for their marriages and for marriage in general! I was unprepared for the response. God has been moving so sweetly in our midst…laying the very same burden on many women around the country. I’m amazed at women who are fasting in Hawaii, fasting on vacation, fasting for two whole days (I’m praying about joining you on this one). By this time you have prayed about participating, you have prayed about a day and hopefully you have prayed about the type of fast you will be doing (partial, food, activity). Now it simply remains to “do it”.
I’m hearing from many that God has led individuals, groups and churches to reclaim spiritual disciplines (not in a legalistic sense…out of a heart of intimacy and gratitude to Christ). What a confirmation. I was unprepared to have several email me and ask for “Scriptural Proof” that Christians are to fast. For these dear sisters the concept was totally new. I delighted in the “Berean” attitude that would cause them to search the Scriptures diligently before joining a “band wagon”.
I’ve tried to answer most questions on my blog. At the end of this message I will list the dates and titles of entries on fasting. I will not copy it all here….as many won’t need all the “nuts and bolts”. {G}
OK –We’ve had a few specific requests that I will list here. May our fasting arise from an intense need to hear God and not to shout at Him.
In my time of prayer over this I have felt God giving me three words for our fast.
Believe – let’s BELIEVE that God wants to work, restore and repair marriages. Let’s pray for a generation that would BELIEVE in marriage. Let’s pray that women and men would turn to the Creator of marriage and BELIEVE most of all in Him. Let’s pray that men and women would fall passionately in love with JESUS and then with each other.
Hope – literally translated in Scripture to mean “an eager expectation”. This is closely tied in with BELIEVE. Let’s pray for those who are feeling “hopeless” to be given a new HOPE in Christ. Pray that we would have HOPE for what God would want our marriages to be. Pray that HOPE would be birthed in seemingly hopeless situations as we do battle for each other's marriages
Value – Let’s pray for our generation and for generations of children to see and be taught the VALUE that God places on marriage. In my prayer time I’ve come back to this again and again. Our society has de-valued marriage. We’ve allowed marriage to be de-valued. It’s time for us to begin to recognize and encourage others to recognize the value of the marriage relationship. I am especially concerned for children here. Please pray that our CHILDREN would see the VALUE in marriage as they observe our marriages. Pray that God would mend your marriage if needed so that it would reflect this VALUE to your children. Pray that generations to follow us would benefit from the stance we take for marriage this week.
*How awesome is our God! Organizing this has been stretching for me. I’ve been timid to share. What an amazing thing that as this sat on my desktop I received TWO emails from TWO different sisters telling me that in THEIR prayer time God is leading them to the words “Believe and Hope” and the other one mentioned “value and generational strongholds”. Wow…..God is so very sweet to send encouragement my way! What a God we serve!
Specific Requests (in addition to the above – directly copied from emails – REMOVED FROM BLOG)
If any of you send in victories that you attribute to this time of fasting I will share them (anonymously – unless you request to be known) with THIS list of those who have participated in the fast and will post them on the blog.
Standing with you, dear sisters in Christ!

SHOWER
Last night's shower was a success. There is something so sweet about having friends into your home to celebrate the blessing of God on a family. Cathy and her daughter were blessed by the gifts they received and I believe by the fellowship we shared.
I scored a coup by sending "just one piece" of cake home with John.....a giant piece....none of us wanted it sitting around. We plan to take up geocaching with this family after their new one arrives and settles in.
Lots of changes coming for this family as John prays about seperating from the army, and re-entering as a Chaplain.

Thanks to all who prayed for Jared and Stacia yesterday! They are both fine today.

FASTING – Motivation
Why do we fast? I believe it is important to check our motives before we begin a fast.
Are we trying to manipulate God? If so, we won’t see a thing. Are we trying to show how very spiritual we are? If so, we mock God and ourselves (Matt 6:16 – 18). Fasting to be noticed by men is useless. In fact, most often others should not be aware that we ARE fasting. Jeremiah 14:12 (and general area) teaches us that fasting with a rebellious heart does not move God.
I believe we fast first and foremost out of obedience. Passages such as Matt 6 show us that Jesus expects his disciples to fast. In Matt 9:15 Jesus seems to be saying that a time will come when He will go away and His disciples will then fast. He seems to expect that at some point in time, Christians will be fasting. Fasting illustrates our physical separation from the bridegroom and our yearning for Him.
I believe we fast because it teaches us much about discipline. We do NOT fast in order to keep salvation. We fast because grace has appeared and it teaches us how to live sensibly, disciplined and godly lives in this present age (Titus 2:11 – 13). In I Cor 9:27 Paul speaks of “disciplining” his body. When we fast, we put our flesh into submission. We also put our mind and soul into submission as we train them to prayer and worship. We move ourselves into a position to hear from God on any given matter. Fasting stems from a deep need to HEAR God; not to shout at Him. We spend intentional time petitioning His face on behalf of a situation. Fasting humbles us (Ps 69:10). Often a renewed awareness of Jesus’ presence in our life and in the situation we are fasting for results from fasting. This may be a dramatic sense of His presence or a quiet assurance of His sovereign love that comes from focusing on Him, His promises, His sacrifice and His love for us.
One last thought, Jesus is fasting now. Jesus told His disciples on the night he was betrayed that He would not drink of the fruit of the vine until He would drink it anew in His Father’s kingdom (Matthew 26:29). Jesus is sitting at the Father’s right hand in heaven, interceding and fasting (at least a partial fast) for His chosen. We can join Him in the fast.

BIRD FEEDER EXPERIMENT UPDATE….
We have had lots and lots of birds this week in the front yard. We have noted that the “song bird” feed is best liked. We changed the variables today. Same food but we put the "song bird" feed lower and the “gourmet mix” up higher. We’ll see if it was the food or the height of the feeder than influenced the birds.

Kitchen Herbs
We set up a kitchen garden with visions of fresh thyme, parsley, basil, chives and cilantro (yuck) dancing in our heads…..

THURSDAY
THIS day is going well. Arielle and Nolan and I got all the reading done that we missed on Monday - Wednesday, as well as today’s reading finished. Jared woke up feeling nauseated but seems to be feeling better this afternoon. He also got school done. Josiah got everything done before I had to take him to work. Jamin decided not to go to practice/training today and is still plugging away at work. I dec
ided to skip homeschool park day because Zander is on day 3 of toilet training and I don’t want to set him up for failure. I can’t believe how incredibly easy this training is going…no accidents at all yesterday or today. I am a firm believer in waiting until a CHILD is ready to train because then it is so easy and Mom doesn’t have to remember to check every 2 hours…but since Zander turned 4 on 8 Feb, he really tested the “wait till their ready” theory. {g} I have NOT a CLUE why he’s in Arielle’s trash can – but there he was.
Nolan and I zipped Josiah to work and took the opportunity to eat Nolan’s first meal (maybe my second?) at Chick-fil- A. We loved watching Josiah work….”Will that be all maam?”, “Can I help you maam?” Ah, he’s a jewel – nah not a jewel a rugged piece of granite! Nolan and I went to a local grocery store to get the ingredients for our healthy drink for the shower. We still made it to speech 10 minutes early.
Speech went WONDERFUL for Nolan today. Miss Natalie says that he self-corrected and even said en-VE – lope…..three syllables with a “V” sound…way to go Nolan. We stopped to pick up balloons for the shower after speech. We were on our way to get the cake when I got a call that Stacia was crying.
I came home. She was asleep. I did a quick clean up…I love the cleaning apron that Mike got me for Christmas. All that is left to do on the house is to sweep and mop the kitchen. I’ll pick up the cake after I get Josiah from work…in about 30 minutes. I’d hoped for a nap but that will come later…..maybe.
Stacia did not do well last night…very fussy with the shots. For some reason Zander was also up and crying. This busy, busy day is going so well I even have time to journal some of it before 10 p.m. {vbg}

"Christmas" in the mail
Woohoo - "A Woman After God's Own Heart" by Elizabeth George arrived today from PBS. It's in NEW condition. This makes me realize that I'll NEVER be able to swap my non-fiction, self-help type books. I suppose there must be some drawback to reading with a pen. {G} I'll have to be content with swapping children's books, non-fiction that evoked no response in me and fiction. {G}
QUICK PRAYER REQUESTS
Jared woke up not feeling well. He is quarantined in his room. I wonder if I'm the only mom who insists on that. I've learned over the years that it helps to control the virus. I'm not heartless...when he is done with school {G}, I'll pull the TV out and put it in his room so he can watch some movies or Hogan's Heroes. There seems to be some sort of system here with a child getting ill for each birthday event. I think he is worried about missing the paint ball bash on Saturday....but this didn't last long for Josiah or Nolan. Poor Jamin is going to start wearing a gas mask - they share a room.
Stacia is running a fever and cranky, cranky, cranky....makes me wonder why we didn't delay shots for another couple of years.....

Healthy Drink...
Bingo! Adrienne emailed me the directions for the healthy drink that is popular in our homeschool support group. I'll be sure to save it, compare and combine it with the recipes that Renee sent and I'll be good to go. We'll have unhealthy cake but it should be balanced out by the healthy nuts and drink...right?
Famous Support Group Healthy drink:
Get seltzer water, peach/mango or peach/orange frozen concentrate and add frozen peaches. It is refreshing and good for you and it looks pretty too.

TAXI DRIVER
Some days are just like this….even if you only have one child…I’m sure.
We got some school done. The older three finished. The two that depend on me got about 75% done. We’ve really struggled this week – and I’m not sure why.
I dropped Josiah off at work. I had to run some errands on the base. I had to pick up some more thyroid meds and pay for Saturday’s birthday paint-ball bash. I met Mike for lunch. I dropped by the peds clinic, hoping to make Stacia’s 4 month well-baby appt…YES, SHE IS SIX MONTHS OLD! GRRRRR…..They still don’t have any appointments but I’ll call at 0700 on Friday and maybe they can get her in a month from now. Then, horrors, they realized that if she was 2 appointments behind then her shots would be behind. Not a problem. We delay shots. I did think that 6 months was a good time to start. I denied several shots and agreed to three. The tech recognized Stacia’s last name as “the chaplains” last name and told me how much she enjoys Mike’s weekly "Word from your chaplain". She said they made her cry every day.
While leaving the Peds clinic I got a call from a friend who I had told about the Feingold diet. She was excited to report that she’d seen marked changes in her son after two days. We used this diet for about 1 ½ years when Jamin was 4. We are gathering all the info to begin it again with Zander. I raced home…had 5 more min to talk with her on the phone…then drove Jamin to FOOTBALL PRACTICE! Can you believe it? What’s up with football practice in FEBRUARY when the first game isn’t until the end of AUGUST???? Jamin isn’t sure if he will join the team next year, but coach thought the training would be good…so off we went. It turns out that the “practice” is only one hour a day…but its five days a week. Not sure what Jamin will decide to do. This is amazing….9 months out of the year devoted to football. Wow. I came home and began dinner. I ran to pick up Jamin. Next stop was the mall to pick up Josiah from work. Then home. Finished dinner, talked with a friend on the phone, served dinner, cleaned up, family worship and now it’s time to end this day.
My calendar for tomorrow looks horrendous….lots and lots of conflicts. My friend asked me how she could help and I couldn’t even figure out what I needed. Driving Josiah to work and Jamin to practice is a kink in my schedule…..Josiah could drive himself but I need the car to get Jamin where he needs to be…it’s too far to ride a bike and we don’t have buses out this way. I need the car to take Nolan to speech anyway…and pick up cake and balloons for the shower….THAT will be fun! I’ll just keep thinking about being able to rest and relax with a houseful of ladies celebrating the addition of a new blessing to a friend’s family…and I’ll get through the rest of the day the best I can.

Potty Training update
It was not a fluke! He got up this a.m. and "made bubbles" again. He's quite proud of himself. He was wet when he woke up...but he's getting it.
I was sure you'd want to know.

WELL!!! WHAT do YOU know???
Zander loves his new cloth “pull-ups”. I am convinced that the disposable ones keep an unobservant child from realizing when he is wet. All morning he would start to go and say, “oh no” and then we’d run to the toilet. He’d sit. Nothing. We’d repeat.
Around lunch time I was thinking “Well at LEAST he now knows what we mean by wet and he doesn’t like it.”
He was in the room and said again, “oh no”. I rushed him to my toilet. I had a bit of a time convincing him to go to my bathroom. I finally told him I’d be right outside the door putting on my makeup. He was content to sit. Soon, I HEARD the most welcome noise I’ve heard in months. I didn’t want to rush in and stop the flow – know what I mean? I waited. Then I peeked around the corner. He was staring at himself and said “WELL!! What do YOU know?” :::snort::: I made the appropriate celebratory noises…o.k. I was excitedly screaming and applauding his accomplishment. Josiah came in and gave him a “high 5”. He told Cy, “I did that in the toilet”. I continued putting on make-up and he proceeded to go back into the bathroom and create a potty training dance. Yep, a dance for EVERY occasion seems to be his motto.
Later today I had to run out for a bit. When I got back home, Zander met me at the door and said, “MOM – I made BUBBLES in the toilet!!!”
I think we are well on our way now. In fact, if he keeps this up, I think he’ll be trained within the week. I went to put a diaper on him at bed time and he really wanted to wear a pull-up. I still have some of the disposable left and put one of those on him. I suspect by the time I’ve used the last of these diapers and pull-ups he’ll be trained.
Yippee…doing my own potty training dance! {vbg}

Brother Love

What fun it is to watch Stacia interact with Josiah. When he gets home from work she starts squirming and smiling and reaching and nothing will do but for Josiah to pick her up. She really does seem to notice when he is not around.
He'll be working 30 hours this week because it is the "stock show and rodeo" week around here. I guess Chick-fil-A has a booth on the grounds so they need to run both spots. They did make sure he has Saturday a.m. off so if it is NICE we can have the paint ball party.
ZANDER

I finally found some REAL training pants for Zander to try. We gave them to him last night after Jamin opened his gifts. He isn’t quite sure of the new “pull ups”. We aren’t making big progress yet on the goal to accurate toilet usage.
Ah…sure…here he is dancing on the table again. Furniture is so very boring when used for simple sitting and such….

Jamin’s Birthday
Jamin chose Chinese for “dinner”. He suggested one spot but Mike directed us to a brand ne Chinese Buffet in town that was much better and cheaper than the one that we had gone to before. Lins for any local folks gets our vote of approval. Since Cy had to work 4 – 8 p.m. and Mike was off for most of the day yesterday we opted for lunch. Yum. Stacia even ate Chinese today (see story below).
Here are some shots of gifts!
Paper? Confirmation of gifts ordered that we can’t get locally – Hogan’s Heroes season 3 (to be released next month) from Cy, Jared, Arielle and Nolan and Imagine If (a board game he wanted) from Zander and Stacia.

Jamin requested a Paint Ball Gun and an Athletic watch. I’d never heard of such a thing. This will keep track of his heart rate, work outs, countdowns etc. He can program in his target rate and it will alert him when he is below or above it…Mike figured he’d use this every day and so chose it over the gun.
We did buy him a few paint ball accessories that he can use when they play at the Base paintball field. Zander promptly got his arm stuck in the “quick loader” (for paintballs).
Jamin chose ice-cream rather than a cake. A month later…and pay back is SOOOO fun!
We’re going to have a Paint Ball Party bash on Saturday to celebrate he and Josiah’s birthdays…..if it doesn’t SNOW again. {g

A Star
What must life be like when every minute is eagerly observed and recorded???? (We certainly aren’t finding that we take less pictures of the youngest ones ). We all watch as Stacia tries rice for the first time.
So far so good.
This stuff is really pretty good – Stacia attacks the spoon.
OK Dad….ENOUGH PICTURES – Let a girl EAT!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAMIN!!!

15 years old! Jamin is the son that taught me to pray “God make me a bit stronger-willed than he is for just one more day!” It’s a prayer I am once again using daily as we disciple his youngest brother.
Jamin is an encouragement to all who have ever heard that their child is “too rowdy, too strong-willed, or too out-of-control”. He is an amazing gentleman these days. He’s quick to jump in and help with chores he sees need to be done. He’s always on hand to carry heavy things for me, now that my wrists won’t allow me to. He has a giving heart and is one to organize “work days” to earn money to give to others.
He is a perfectionist. I USED to be. We are working on a new goal for him…excellence rather than perfection.
Jamin tends to be a loner. We’ve laughed with him over the fact that God placed him in the MIDDLE of a large family to help him learn to interact with a variety of personalities…because he would not go out of his way to meet various personalities otherwise. Living in a Chaplain’s family that is constantly moving is a challenge for Jamin, who doesn’t enjoy change, but He’s learning to take it in stride. He’s a favorite with the younger boys at homeschool park day. I’ve even heard rumor that one is planning on buying him a light saber for his birthday.
When I tell Jamin’s story to mom’s who are struggling they are always so encouraged. Just this week at chapel one was moved when hearing that I was told “He’ll never be able to learn how to read if you don’t get him on Ritalin”. He’s the one who recently completed writing a 139 page book. We prayed about it and were led with this child not to put him on any sort of drugs. We worked with diet, and lots and lots of one on one discipling and mentoring (good ole’ fashioned hands-on parenting).
I’m so thrilled to see his heart for God and his heart for FAMILY…God has certainly done a maturing and growing work in his life. He is a young man any mother would be proud of (and father too – but this is MY perspective).
When I share Jamin’s story people want to know what “books” or what “parenting philosophy” we use. First, I’m leery of self-help books, including Christian self-help books. I found the most helpful thing to be to do topical studies on parenting/children and discipline. Doing Topical studies caused me to STUDY the words and contexts of those passages, rather than interpreting them the way I’ve “heard them all my life”. If pressed for books others could read I would say that parts of these books made an impact on our parenting philosophy. Only PARTS – because I’ve yet to find a book that I totally agree with, except the Bible. There are a lot of books here; we’ve been parenting nearly 21 years now. {G} *Making Your Child Mind without Loosing Yours* by Dr. Kevin Leman explains reality discipline. This is big for us. We want our children to learn, while under our care, HOW to make good choices and how to LIVE with the consequences of their choices. *Shepherding a Child’s Heart* by Tedd Tripp – unless we win the heart of our child for God, we’ve only created a generation of Pharisees. *Age of Opportunity* by Paul David Tripp, focuses on parenting youth. It’s great at pointing out how often OUR insecurities interfere with mentoring our children during this time of their lives. We have found the “teen years” to be wonderful years of reaping the benefits of the younger years of training. It truly is an AGE of OPPORTUNITY. Of course, and I’ve posted this before, but the article “The Myth of the Teenager” by Michael Platt also shaped our parenting. We have found Josh’ McDowell’s Right from Wrong materials to be great for using with our youth.
NO - I do not receive a commission from Amazon.com it's simply the quickest place I know for reviews of books.
FASTING
As promised, I’m going to try to answer most common questions here.
Last week I posted the link to Mr. Bill Bright’s booklet on fasting. If you’ve spent time there you have Scriptural background for fasting.
As women are praying about joining this fast, I’m receiving many questions.
A common question is “I have low blood-sugar; I’m nursing – can I fast?”.
I think it will help to know that there are different types of fasts. This is not a 40 day-water-only fast that we’re praying about. Some people can NOT fast for even 24 hours. Those people can still consider a partial fast. Can you fast one meal (nursing maybe – low blood sugar not recommended)? Can you fast a food type? Determine before God that you will eat only fruits and vegetables for that day (this is called a Daniel fast after Daniel’s request that he not be made to eat the King’s food).
Fasting is NOT always food. Maybe you are in a situation where you CANNOT skip food (company, traveling, health reasons). You can fast from anything. You could determine before God to not fast from the TV, radio, books, computer…..Interestingly enough many in the high church tradition and the Catholic tradition do this every year during the Lent season. We have members of SHS (Support4HomeSchool – email list) who leave us every Lent because God leads them to spend the time they normally spend on the list in prayer.
I would be remiss not to send another reminder that no one should fast unless they are being prompted by God to do so. We are not going to slide into legalism. {G}
Later today or tomorrow I hope to post about motivations for fasting.
As a reminder: if you send my original email on to your friends, please let them know it is coming FROM YOU…add a personal note. Otherwise they think I’ve sent out a bulk email and am spamming them. Email etiquette also dictates that you send out all “forwarded” emails or emails going to many people “blind copy”. This means that no one else can glean your friends’ email address. It’s polite to remove all other email addresses before forwarding on an email. Tip for security of the day. {bg}

Zander's Choice
Stacia Breakdances
My enterprising young men discovered that Stacia totally loves the newest Toby Mac CD. I came in from an errand and found the music blaring and Stacia “dancing”. She’s a hoot. We put the CD in for Mike to observe today. She starts on her back kicking her feet, then she rolls over, shakes her head side to side, kicks, wiggles, does mini-push ups – it’s HILARIOUS!

Our Bird
FRESH PRODUCE!!!
When we lived in San Antonio I ran a weekly produce co-op. I did it very simply…everyone bought a “share”. I went to the Produce Terminal and bought as many cases of fruit as I could and then sorted it into equal shares back home. People bought 1 – 4 shares….. There wasn’t much say in what they got. I listened and bought what I could but you got what you got.
This co-op is a bit different. This was only the first week so it was chaotic for those setting it up; but I’m thrilled. {G} They let everyone order exactly what they wanted:“5 lbs of Pink Lady” and “2 lbs of Roma tomatoes”. This makes so much more work for THEM but such wonderful choices for us. The truck doesn’t deliver in our town so it was quite late by the time we got our things. During our three years in Alaska we really missed the abundance of fresh produce that we were used to. It was so FUN to bring in the cases and boxes of produce last night and see everyone gather around and eat up. One funny thing is that I didn’t realize they liked kiwis but a friend wanted 10 so I bought them for her. 2 of her kiwis went missing.
For the children yesterday was especially great because I kept 4 of Adrienne’s boys while she drove out to get the produce. Everyone was great…they had a lot of fun. I was a bit unnerved by the amount of activity to track. Once I realized I should just grab a book and sit in the living room…..all the activity would eventually swirl around me – we were fine. It was COLD yesterday so we had to think of inside things to do. Yes, it WAS cold and is today!!!! We even have frost outside this a.m.
Here are some pictures of the fun.

It was COLD yesterday so we had to think of inside things to do. Yes, it WAS cold and is today!!!! We even have frost outside this a.m.
Here are some pictures of the fun.

Courageous Christians

First I loved “Courageous Christians” by Joyce Vollmer Brown, then I didn’t like it, then I did again. {G} I enjoyed the author’s thoughts at the start of the book. The observation on how one believer’s life influences another….we are all more “connected” than we often realize. I agree with the premise that we need to make the effort to find heroes and role models for our children. This generation has a lot of celebrities but few real role models.
The author has taken 60 people and written a short biographical sketch on each one. The sketch is followed by one or two questions for discussion.
These are billed as “family devotional readings”. OK – for devotions – I’m not sold. I want my children to get into the WORD and so I prefer to read a passage and discuss it with them, look up words we need to look up and memorize them. I found these summaries and one question to be inadequate to term “devotional” but many enjoy them.
I did enjoy this book because it had a lot of variety in the 60 people it chose. They were not all missionaries and they didn’t all live before 1600. There were current people and “heroes” I’d never heard of as well. I found this book in the library and was glad to have read it.
I also have Hero Tales (Vol 1 and 2) by Dave and Neta Jackson. For young children I prefer these volumes. They have appealing line sketches of each character. They give a short bio and then 3 quick sketches from each person illustrating specific character trait. I feel like we got MORE info on each person. They also have questions for discussion. I wouldn’t’ use this book for devotions either, but I DO read it to the children to give them Godly heroes. I do use it to read about various characters when we are studying that time period in history….
I love this quote by A.W. Tozer, “Next to the Holy Scriptures the greatest aid to the life of faith may be Christian biography.” This book awoke in me the desire to read more Christian biographies. They encourage, challenge and motivate me to walk closer with my Lord and Savior. I copied the “bibliography” from the back of this book for this purpose.
Thursday in Review!
Thursdays are usually “park days” with either the local Christian homeschool group or my new group of friends. I am lovingly beginning to think of us as the park rats. {G}
I woke up yesterday knowing that if we were going to make the park, I’d have to get school done, and run to Wal-mart and Sam’s club before noon. We’d then zip to speech. Somewhere in the middle of making that plan work the flu hit. I decided I did NOT want to go to the park – but we needed to work the plan through speech.
During breakfast clean up we noticed that we had a YARD FULL of doves…
we also spotted a blue jay and one furry creature who loves our yard was content to eat with all the birds. Jamin, Cy and I call it possessed the little ones have named it as it’s hung around for months. He doesn’t show up clearly in the picture… Look to the left side of the shadow from the eve to see the squirrel…unfortunately many of the birds flew off when I approached the window.
I did couch school with Arielle and Nolan. The older three boys progress fairly independently – and I schedule an hour a day, usually right before lunch, to answer questions, provide input etc With couch school done, and the four little ones watching a Veggie Tales movie from the library, Cy and I ran for Wal-mart. He needed to buy a pair of black shoes and black socks before work! Yippee! A new phase of growing up for our 17 year old! I decided it would be a good time for the dreaded “sock and underwear” stock up. My very own version of a “white sale”. One of my nameless sons is very embarrassed to go with me when I do this – says people look at us strange with a cart full of socks and underwear – so I did it while out alone with Josiah. I haven’t pointed out to lately that people look at us strange no matter WHERE we go or WHAT we’re doing…so why sweat it? We finished at Wal-mart and headed to Sam’s Club for milk, formula and a couple of other things. I resisted temptation and did not stock up on produce because I knew that FRIDAY we’ll be getting lots of fresh produce from the co-op.
Back at home I grabbed Nolan and we headed for speech. I usually have 1 – 3 others with me at this point but left them home so that I’d be free to fully observe speech and have another discussion with the therapists. I observed. Totally cool that Nolan didn’t know I was there. As I expected (and the therapist knew I was watching and so was trying) the “bed-side” manner has got to be the difference. She is just a “no nonsense” type and he is used to our wonderful, peppy, FUN Tracey from AK. She had listened to me and was NOT teaching Look Say reading yesterday. I observed what she was doing and it will be very simple for me to do it at home now. I’ve been asking for ideas to use at home since November. I noticed that they were doing NO exercises whatsoever for his flaccid face. Afterwards we had another talk. I asked about exercises for the flaccid face. Oh – she hadn’t NOTICED. I know this is her very first job out of college….but moms at the park have noticed this. {sigh} I then asked when they were going to schedule the hearing exam and told them AGAIN about the family history with deafness. She apologized and said “This is my first client and I didn’t do his eval so I didn’t know we had these issues!” ARGH – I wanted to say READ THE FOLDER!!!! But I didn’t. I was very polite but firm. It helped that they knew I was ready to call the district special ed supervisor and tell her they don’t have the tools to fulfill the goals on his IEP…..they knew that because I told them that on Tuesday. I’m finally learning how to fight for the kids {g}. She stated that the sounds he is having difficulties with are all on a certain tone and maybe he IS having trouble hearing that tone….da duh! She asked me what I was working on in phonics so that she can work with me…..great idea huh? She is going to research and have exercises for him by Tuesday that we can use at home as well. I’m going through my copy of “Books Are for Talking To” by Jane Gerber and finding books that isolate the sounds she is working on at speech. I’m simply going to have to make it a point to observe once a week or so and to keep communicating with her. Part of the trouble is obviously that she is asking him to communicate about things he has no CLUE about…so when he doesn’t communicate much or not at all she has deemed his response “inappropriate”. The supervisor dislikes homeschoolers. They have sort of fallen into the “ah – this is a homeschool family – not teaching blah blah blah”. I dealt with that issue head on. I explained that I know she is trying to get him to communicate to observe his speech in normal conversations….but asking him “What is your favorite cartoon?” “What rock group do you like?” etc isn’t going to get her places. She then asked him about the park and couldn’t shut him up. {bg} I think she learned not to quickly label kids but to try another approach.
Adrienne called while I was stealthily observing speech. She had called my home and the kids told her we got all the work done but couldn’t come to the park because I wanted to throw up. She wanted to know if I would let the kids go to the park, and she would bring them home. Nolan told me “Mom, I think you need to work really hard when you feel good and lay down when you feel sick”. I thought that was sage advice. Pretty smart 7 year old! That was my plan. Of course, having the large family I have, all the park moms are now speculating on if number 10 will arrive in the winter. {vbg}
I ran home, picked up kids. I dropped Josiah at work. I planned to take Jared, Arielle, and Nolan to the park. Zander still doesn’t trust people quickly and so wasn’t going. Ah – Adrienne had a son like Zander and so is patient and understanding when he has a major melt-down or freaks out because someone TOUCHED him. I had printed up some forms for the lady who is organizing the produce co-op and needed to drop those off after dropping of Cy and before dropping the others at the park. She lives by the park so I swung by there. I’d printed the wrong forms. She wanted to follow me home immediately and reprint them. I couldn’t drop kids at the park until Adrienne arrived…so off home we went. Heather printed her forms, then took my kids to meet Adrienne. I finally went to lie down…..
In walks Adrienne, her kids and my kids. JaNae (2) had hit her face on a park toy…an airplane that goes back and forth. She was oozing blood from her mouth and nose. They hadn’t been able to see the damage yet. Her boys (4) went to play in the back with my boys. She slings her baby like an expert! He was quiet and content and I introduced JaNae to those frozen sugar-water popsicle things. Muhahahaha…..then of course she let her older boys have some too. I’m watching the boys today while she runs to a nearby town to get produce so I’m hiding all the popsicle things this a.m. They of course LOVE my house!
I suddenly realize it is 5:30 and Mike isn’t home. I am so glad I’d pulled two Chicken Pot Pies from the freezer in the a.m. NO – not Swanson – I’m a 30 day Gourmet. This has saved me so many times. Adrienne watched in horror as I pulled salad out of a BAG (ugh) and I told her I had something even more disgusting in my freezer….and smugly pulled out the “griller” breakfast sandwiches from Sam’s club. They taste like the ones at McDonald’s for breakfast…..I LOVE Adrienne. She has strong convictions (as do I for that matter) but doesn’t mind that our convictions don’t always match. She’s had 5 “supernatural births” and said the key is to get in a place where you believe for pain free etc. I told her I was in a place to believe for an epidural this time. :::snort::: She eats totally healthy…no sugar, preservatives, boxed Mac and Cheese….but laughs at my patterns…we eat “healthy” lots of fruit and veggies and such but I DO eat sugar and chocolate and have a box of sausage sandwiches in my freezer for quick mornings. She’s a jewel of a friend. She has a 15 year old daughter that I can’t wait to introduce to my girls this summer. The funny thing is that she has a baby just a month younger than Stacia. OH….funny from the Park on Wed. Adrienne and I are sitting under the shade. Another “play date group” was there. The moms were talking. They were very chic, very preppy, young and "together". They emphatically were condemning a “friend” who had decided to have a THIRD child. They would NEVER have more children because you can only adequately watch ONE child…maybe they’ll have TWO but NEVER EVER three…..and there we sit….with 16 children between us. I snorted…Adrienne was more dignified in her delight.
Mike got home and Adrienne realized her husband needed a call. She left to pick him up and my phone rang. I had forgotten to pick JOSIAH up at the mall from work. He had been waiting an HOUR.
We had dinner. Somewhere along the line I quit being nauseated and so ate for the first time that day. Family worship was great…Luke has some VERY long chapters. Adrienne dropped off a co-op catalog. I want Wheat MT Prairie Gold wheat but may have to get Hard White Wheat instead. I can’t find it here. I also can’t find a 7 grain mix and may have to make my own….I can’t find triticale but I could have a 6 grain mix.
Jamin has begun a second book.
Krista called. What a wonderful way to end the day! Mike and I were both able to chat with her. She was very excited to talk with us as we’d not heard from her for a couple of weeks. Someone had scraped the military sticker off her windshield and we stressed how important it would be for her to call Fairchild and let them KNOW that and to see how to get more stickers. I’m not sure if she can since the car is Mike’s…..but she needs to get on BASE to pick up meds. Great conversation…late to bed.
Today is sure to be calmer.

Stacia is 6 months old today!!!

She did NOT crawl on the date Kelly chose. Sorry. {G}
I did figure out the sling thing this a.m. It seems the "thick padding" that I was told went under her rear is really a thick padding that should go on the back of my shoulder. The other thick padding goes under her rear. {G} That piece of info helped tremendously. At the park with Adrienne yesterday, I noticed that HER sling didn't have a thick padded part for the rear. Tricia was there as well and we both had a good laugh. She had been given this sling before me and couldn't figure it out either. Shew...I'm not alone. Stacia didn't seem to enjoy this experience. She seems to like falling out (see earlier pictures) better. She continuously head butted my chin...maybe I have her to high.
Oh yes...my hair...it's WET....doesn't always look like this.
A Poll -
I've been thinking about this all week.... I'd love to hear some answers.
How much laundry does a "normal family" do? Care to clue me in....say 2 or 3 kids? Or just tell me your family size and how much laundry you do a week.

The Novel

Jamin’s been working on a book for a couple of year’s. This project was born one year when I handed him "Learn to Write the Novel Way" to play with. His goal was to have the rough draft done while he was 14. He has spent the last several months revising the novel. He’s finished! He turns 15 in 5 days and finished it on Nolan's birthday (last Wed). It is 139, single-spaced, 8x11 pages. Now Mike and I will read it. Mr. John from chapel has said he’d like to read it….and Jamin would like to get it published…but I have no clue how to proceed with that goal.
We surprised him with a printed out copy of the book after he was done lifting weights.

I read the first sentence, written in his Charles Dickens style, and mentioned that 4 lines for a first sentence is sure to attract Mike's red pen. {G}

FASTING
I will be answering the most often asked questions I’m getting about fasting here on the blog.
Tonight I want to send this link from Bill Bright of Campus Crusade. Thanks Yvonne for sharing this link on SHS. Bill Bright has composed an article titled *7 Basic Steps to Successful Fasting and Prayer*. I offer this as a concise guide that contains Scriptures along the way. Do note that Mr. Bright is discussing a 40 day fast. I’ve only called those who the Spirit is calling to a one day fast.
Briefly Mr. Bright informs us to set our objective, make our commitment, prepare ourselves spiritually, prepare ourselves physically, put ourselves on a schedule (YIKES WHAT’S THAT {G}), end our fast gradually and expect results.
Above all – PRAY about this….don’t feel pressured by me to do this.

WAY TO GO JARED!!!!

Jared, our 6th grader, has finished Saxon 6/5 today. This is big. This is HUGE! This is wonderful! It means that he will begin Saxon 7/6 tomorrow. I’m sure he’ll be able to test out of the first few lessons of the book. His goal is to be done with 7/6 by the time he begins 7th grade. That means he’d be right on TRACK.
As a 3rd grader Jared and I made a mistake. He pulled the wool over my eyes and I was not conscientious to check his work. We’ve been working together to deal with the consequences of that lost year of math for the past three years. In 4th grade I insisted he do 3rd grade math….and we’ve been slowly plodding away, making up a few units each year until FINALLY he’s within months of being “caught up”. Please understand that I was gracious and merciful and accepted my share of the fault for the lost year…but we felt he needed to learn that we wouldn’t bail him out when he cheated. This is a LIFE lesson.
Biggest lessons we learned from this bout of reality discipline: I learned – Check their work every day (or at least weekly). I also learned to teach and re-teach and re-teach until they “get it” – use different methods if needed – but don’t simply give up. Jared learned “if you cheat, you won’t learn what you need to and it will be harder for you”. Life lessons we learned…Don’t look for short cuts, perseverance pays off, sometimes you have to allow a bit of pain into a child’s life for them to grow, be CONSISTENT with grading! The funny thing is that through this whole 3 year trip – Jared and I have been drawn together as each of us realized the part we played in his mess.
We’re going to pull out the CELEBRATE plate tonight for sure! BUT I’m not letting him burn the Saxon text book.
The Birds are coming!
We dutifully hung our hangers a couple of weeks ago and waited for birds. None. They were in the BACKyard eating dog food but not the two kinds of bird seed from our science experiment. They are along the fence and in the tree in the backyard but avoiding the front.
Finally, last week we saw a couple of birds. THIS week there are lots of birds. This morning we saw 8 grackles, 3 doves, a sparrow looking bird and a red cardinal. We are also hearing some unknown song bird and the doves in the early a.m. outside our bedroom window again.
NOW we can go ahead and put out the other bird experiments.

BREAD BAKING
I baked my first real loaves of bread since moving….first time in 8 months. The boys are enjoying it but I’m not sure quite what I did wrong. They did NOT rise like they usually do. I’m thinking either the yeast was too old or I’ve lost my touch. I had brought enough grain, dough enhancer and SAF yeast to last a month while I looked for another supplier of grains. I’m thinking the yeast has sat too long. I’ll try again when we eat these up and proof the yeas first. I’ve been spoiled with not needing to do that with my BOSCH but maybe since it is older yeast that will help.
We’re going to the park this afternoon. I’m going to help Adrienne and Heather as they set up a new produce co-op…if I can remember any tips that might be helpful. {G}Adrienne is going to bring the catalog from her co-op and I’m going to see about ordering some grain and get back into the swing of baking. She assures me that she has never had bugs fly out of buckets of grains with gamma seals on them…so maybe I can make this work in TX after all. . .

SPEECH WOES
I'm a bit unsettled about Nolan's speech. I talked with his therapist yesterday. Thursday I will observe. I'm not sure if I should try to have another discussion with HER, her supervisor or call the district and talk to those who did his IEP.
He's always LOVED speech - for the 2 years he's gone in AK. He is visibly upset now when he knows it's a speech day. He's tense, uptight and has even teared up when walking into the building. This is not normal. After I talked with the therapist yesterday about her method of teaching, I heard her with her supervisor. The supervisor was telling her she needs to make eye contact etc....and she was saying "but he won't look me in the eye"...this is so not like him.
My talk with her had nothing to do with him not wanting to come. She's brand new. I know that she is learning that "patient/client manner" that is so important for new docs and such to learn.
Yesterday, she told me that he CAN make all the sounds now but speaks to fast. She's teaching him to read. I told her I was doing that. She showed me the book she is having him "read". I told her that is way beyond his reading ability. She showed me that she tells him to trace the word, memorize its shape and then they close their eyes and say the word etc. and that he is learning to read. I explained that we are teaching him to read via phonics and that I didn't want her to be teaching him to "read" via the whatever this method is way. She said the only thing to help him artic is to learn to read this way. I told her that if the only thing they have to offer is to teach him to read then this is a waste of the school district's money because WE are teaching him to read and can read to him and slow him down at HOME.
In AK our speech therapist was giving him exercises to strengthen his jaw and mouth muscles...he has weak muscle tone. She was giving us things to do at home, she insisted he needed a thorough hearing exam by an audiologist...which we didn't get due to the move.....
Here they send nothing home, do no exercises, haven't said a word about the hearing test (though I requested it in November) and all she tells me each week is "we read a book". On top of this he now is visibly worried about attending speech.
Please pray with us as I try to figure out what to do and where to go from here. I certainly don't want to pull him out if they can still offer something to help....but I HAVE the ARTIC books that show which books to read for which sounds etc. I have several of the Speech Therapy books that our therapist recommend the state of AK buy for us...so really...if he can make the sounds...and they have nothing to offer but read.....maybe it is time to see about terminating therapy......but I don't want to do that if they have tools to help him further....See the quandry?

I have several of the Speech Therapy books that our therapist recommend the state of AK buy for us...so really...if he can make the sounds...and they have nothing to offer but read.....maybe it is time to see about terminating therapy......but I don't want to do that if they have tools to help him further....See the quandry?

... in one month...I wonder who is reading this....feel free to comment....I write this thinking what would parents and dear friends who are away from us want to know and see.... I know we don't have over 300 friends and family checking each week....so welcome whoever you are...I'm a bit perplexed as to what is worth spending time reading here...but you are certainly welcome and feel free to "be known" at any time.....or continue to read and hopefully pray for the requests we mention.

RE: Fasting
I will be getting my notes compiled and posting more on fasting...It is apparent that there are more questions that I expected on this discipline. I love the emails I'm receiving.
I would suggest, if you have questions, that you do a topical study on fasting while you wait for me to compile my notes (which exist in the margins of my Bible - it may be easier to scan my Bible in {G}). You can go here; click on phrase search and type in the word fasting. You'll have the start of a topical study. Jot down the verses that look appropriate, look them up, read them in CONTEXT, and note what each has to say about fasting. Make a list of the things you learn. Ask God how He would have you apply the things you learn. I tried to get the free web tool for the blog from blueletter Bible but I'm not quite sure what html code I need. {G}
I'll try to answer the most often asked questions that I'm receiving here....

Our Anniversary
I should be writing something profound and meaningful, but I didn't get it done before this a.m. The kids are raring for the day to begin, Stacia is up and wanting attention....but I don't want to let the day go by without saying:
I've been incredibly blessed to be married to this man for 22 years today!
Yes the picture is a bit funky...but it was very late at night during a month of very late work nights. Don't ya wish you could dress in such a fancy suit for work? OK - this is a mess dress and is only for formal affairs....when we were new into the military I delighted Mike's peers and supervisiors by saying we'd be going to the ball and yes...."Mike bought a new mess kit to wear". A mess kit is camping like plate, fork and cup....
OK what was I saying? Twenty-two years and I STILL feel incredibly lucky to have this man in my life. I think the biggest compliment I could give him is that I pray almost daily that God brings a man "just like Dad" to each of my daughters.

Fasting
Lady Friends,
I've been clearly hearing the Lord say "do this" and I've been arguing. I've asked several "what will others think of my motives", how does this fit with Matthew's teaching to "wash your face when you fast - do it in secret"? Really it boils down to being obedient. I've prayed about this and get no sense of God allowing me to shrug this off. This has been sitting on my desktop for nearly two weeks as I “double-checked” again with God.
By way of background:
For the past year and a half God has graciously led me as I've explored "spiritual disciplines". Not in any legalistic sense but as a way to draw closer in intimacy with Him. Any who know me know that I’m very allergic to legalism. I was wary as I began to follow this path. I've not shared a lot about my journey...because I believe that there is a discipline of "secrecy" as well as the more public disciplines of the faith. A good place to start if you want to read up on spiritual disciplines would be the book Intimate Faith by Jan Winebrenner. Note that this is a primer…I would personally recommend that you branch out into some classics of the faith and do topical studies from the Word on the various spiritual disciplines.
One discipline that I’ve been led to add back into my life is fasting. I’ve done this regularly for quite some time now. I was led to fast for my family – specifically my children, my husband and their mother and wife – on a regular basis. This has led to some marvelous changes in ME. {g} An invitation to join with a group of friends from Hardin, MT in a fast for our children a couple of months ago was another joyful confirmation that God is leading me to fast for my children/family.
The Call:
God has been speaking in my heart to call women to a day of fasting for marriages. This is SO IMPORTANT. I see such an attack on Christian marriages today. I see a generation being raised to think that the marriage relationship has no value! Romance is given great value while commitment, loyalty and obedience are seen as old-fashioned. I see women unhappy, miserable and feeling alone; who in turn nag and tear apart their own husbands. Cleary many of us imitate the woman in Proverbs 14:1 – the foolish woman who tears her house apart WITH HER OWN HANDS! I see husbands caught in sin, wives caught in sin, children being torn apart as Christian parents turn the safe-haven of home into a battlefield. Ladies, we need to take a stand. We need to humbly repent and seek forgiveness from our Lord and our spouses. We need to pray that our husbands would hear GOD’S voice loudly, which often means we need to BE QUIET so they CAN hear God’s voice above ours. There are many thoughts zinging through my mind. I’d like to have developed this more definitely before I shared…but I hear God saying “Now…call your sisters to fast for their marriages and on behalf of the marriages of their Sisters”. So I am. Your marriage may be perfectly solid but God may be calling you to lovingly pray for the marriages of others in your life.
I am asking the women I know to PRAYERFULLY consider if God is asking them to join me in a fast on behalf of marriage. I am asking for a commitment to fast on either Sunday or Monday (the 26th or 27th of February). Please do not join because it’s the “thing to do”. Please ask God if He is asking you to join. I believe that we will see strongholds broken (in our lives, our husband’s lives and our marriages) and relationships restored. BUT I believe that NO ONE should fast if God is not tugging at their hearts to join.
In the next weeks I will be compiling a list of those who are committed to fast on the 26th or 27th. If you are one of those, please email me at Mike_De’Etta@verizon.net I will be sending out one reminder and some sort of a prayer guide as the 26th approaches. I will only send this to those who respond at the above email address.
If you have specific requests you would like us to remember as we pray and fast – send them. I’ll compile a list. Please note that I am sending this call to women in my email address book, posting it on SHS (a homeschool email list I co-own) and on my blog….in other words I’m believing for a mighty army of Godly women to rise up and fast….For this reason, your requests will be sent out “anonymously” to those who respond. I will only share your name if you specifically ask for that to be done. I will send all correspondence “blind copy” so that your email address will not be seen by others. I will not send specific requests to any email list or blog – the list will only go to those who ask to have their name added as one who is committed to fast.
If there are questions on fasting, I may well post a few entries on our blog about that. I will not be sending another reminder of this to SHS or to the women in my address book. I trust that if you are called to participate God will prompt you to respond.
Dear friends, I thank you for reading through this and for prayerfully considering your response. I regret that my confusion over “motives” has caused me to wait so long…but I am hearing a clear “NOW” and so will humbly obey…now.
I believe for some mighty victories in relationships!

WooHOO!!!!
Josiah has been consistently looking for work since we moved! He’s been a trooper though it has been discouraging. I kept telling him that in a college town such as this he’d probably find that they don’t hire 16 year olds.
He had an interview and call back from a Chick-Fil-A a couple of weeks ago. The man wanted to hire him but didn’t really need to hire someone. We felt that it was a good experience for him and we talked about how he could interview better. He turned 17 on the 9th.
Today he got a call to interview at the Chick-Fil-A in the mall. He went. He just called to say that they hired him. He begins tomorrow. He’ll be working 20 – 25 hours a week but NO SUNDAYS!!!! because the company isn’t opened on Sundays.
He forgot to ask what min. wage is down here…considerably less than in AK but that is fine. He really wants to save for a car and for life after he graduates…so this is good.
Every night at family worship Nolan has been saying “pray that Cy gets a job” and I know it’s gotten a bit wearing on Josiah to hear it night after night but Nolan will be SOOOO excited. {G}

FOUR big pieces of exciting news early this Monday a.m.
1. The boys are really into Brian Jacques Redwall series. We got them about 8 of the books for Christmas. They purchased two more from Amazon on Saturday but what is really exciting to them is that they were able to get Pearls of Lutra from the Paperback swap and it is ON ITS WAY to them. I'm going to find it interesting to see how the shipping compares - Amazon vs. media rate.
2. Hogans Heroes arrived last week - twice. {vbg} One set took weeks to arrive the other came in 2 days as promised on the website. UPS will pick up the second copy today.
3. River City Produce is the company that I did business with 3 1/2 years ago when we lived in San Antonio and I ran a produce co-op. There is a group here in town starting a produce co-op this week. I was invited to join. The truck will bring produce to a town 45 min from here every two weeks. It's from River City Produce....the prices are still great and I'm dreaming that the produce is still much fresher than anything we find on a store's shelves....because you eliminate the middle man. They are doing things a bit different...instead of all the money going in and buying shares....you order just what you want and hope that others order enough to make up the case....but I think it will work well.
4. Chonda Pierce is coming to town. I wondered if we could get enough folks to go from the chapel to get the group rate. I wasn't able to attend chapel yesterday but it's been reported to me that we got 10 to sign up in a "snap". I'm excited...one to have a fun, clean night out and two that people were interested in going from the chapel. Mike won't be able to come because it is the same night as Gospel Explosion....but maybe Arielle would go with me for a fun girls night out.
I started this to share two things...the book and the fruit and look...this IS going to be a good Monday. {g}

Finally!
We *F*I*N*A*L*L*Y* opened Josiah’s birthday gifts tonight.

Cy’s Worldview…gift from Stacia and Nolan

Zander couldn’t wait to open “his” gift to Cy!
