This is a fire rainbow - rarest of all naturally occuring atmospheric phenomena.The picture was captured on the ID/WA border. The event lasted about 1 hour.
Clouds have to be cirrus, at least 20K Feet in the air, with just the right amount of ice crystals and the sun has to hit the clouds at precisily 58 degrees.

yes, they are real, we saw several when we lived in Eastern Washington. Our photos didn't turn out as well as that shot though.

I would love to see some in real life - right up there with the Northern Lights which we used to sit at the top of "our" mountain and watch all winter in AK. ::snort::
