ACK....

I've said before that Thursdays are my puzzle piece days.

This was no exception....

Except ::snort:: I fit in 3 1/2 - 4 hours of phone calls, emails, brainstorming....listening to what everyone would like to see "changed" on a webpage....figuring out ways to make it all "work"...and now I'm so very tired of sitting in front of the computer that I can't type another thing.....

Goodnight. LOL

BTW - it really WAS fun to visit with ladies that I don't often visit with....to dream of ways to portray "ourselves"...all fun....but I'm tired of computers and want a real face to visit with....to bad Mike is still at work. I think I'll settle for a book.....

Desperate Times call for Desperate Measures

I headed to the gym this a.m. only to discover the Toyota was completely iced over. I couldn't find an ice scraper and so used my military ID. ::snort:: The roads were a bit icy but there were no other drivers out so all in all it was an easy drive.

I made yogurt (and not sour milk) again. I doubled the honey and vanilla this time and won't do that again. I think I'll try Agave Nectar next time.

I was finally trying to come up with a dinner plan an execute it when I got two calls....JB Auto and Mike. Off I went to meet Mike and pick up our van.

It was 5:30 when I got home, Mike was stopping by the hospital to visit a few folks...and I still had the dinner problem.

I remembered that I had one last bag of spaghetti sauce in the freezer....and I had ordered a case of shells from co-op last month. I was a bit perplexed at why they had to be stored in the freezer.

Photobucket

Well - this will make a quick meal. BTW even ORGANIC freezer meals taste bland and yucky....but it was dinner....and I was desperate. I am STILL looking for big shells that are whole wheat or whole grain...any ideas? Not stuffed, dinner type shells - just the shells so I can stuff them myself. I would love to find the same thing in manicotti pasta.

It was wonderful to have Mike home tonight. He's been working some long hours preparing for a big inspection on base. We took advantage of having him home. I challenged them all to a game of Sorry and was promptly trounced.

Photobucket

School - lots of table school was done. A bit of couch school (I fell asleep).

Boys....

Zander really likes this series....we are getting quite a collection. He saw the amazon package and said, "Now which one should I read first?"

It's official! Jamin received the acceptance letter to Eugene Bible College. He says he's leaning towards it...but still praying through a couple of issues.

Book Share

Cheryl (not sure if she'd want me to share the link to her blog) is a local friend. Cheryl is "the one" who loaned me this book. She's told me to go ahead and pass it along.

If you live in the local area (you know where that is) and would like to read this book, please contact me. After we've passed it around here, maybe I'll offer it as a giveaway. ::snort::

I suspect several would enjoy reading this one. I found it interesting. The only thing I really, really disliked is the way they switch writing perspective. I wish they'd chose ONE and stick with it..... IE "I (Jim Bob)" and then in the next paragraph read something that is obviously Michelle's perspective....and vice verse...but that's not a huge problem. LOL

Thanks, Cheryl!

Children are bad for our Economy? (And other rhetoric)

*Warning - I'm climbing on a soapbox...do not read if you do not share my political views.

I was recently given a book to read by Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar on their family life and history. (Thanks, Cheryl, I need to send that back with Mike). I was STUNNED at some of the comments others have made when they simply SEE this cover. I almost covered it in a brown paper bag. ::snort:: I also wondered if those who were declaring how selfish Michelle must be, how wrong large families are, etc, remember that they are in the presence of a woman who HAS 9 children.... if every baby I'd conceived had been born I'd have 17 children. Do they think the same about our family? Do they think that I'm destroying my body? Do they think that I'm lazy? Do they think that I simply "birth children and force the older ones to parent them?" Hmmm.....

I read, Twenty and Counting, before I formed my opinion on the Duggars. I do not have television and haven't followed their story closely. Frankly, life is far too busy raising, mentoring, and educating my children. Not once in the book do either Jim Bob or Michelle say that "all" families must dress, eat, conceive, spend or educate as they do. Not once. I would not make all of the same choices on parenting or homeschooling that they have....but they don't SAY that all have to do it their way. They simply share their convictions. For that they are ridiculed on the internet. Unfortunately, all the comments I have received come from Christian women. When did it become unacceptable in America to live out and share one's convictions?

I am bombarded daily by the convictions of the culture around me. I'm told to be tolerant. Why in the world are parents of large families not afforded the same respect? I would NEVER say to another, "the choices you have made before God are selfish," or "you obviously don't value children because you x,y or z", or "your educational choices are wrong"....so why do others feel it is o.k. to make such comments to me? It really is very intolerant of them. ::snort::

I have discussed the thoughts I will share in the next paragraph with a couple of dear friends and Mike this week. I mentioned that my common comeback when told that, "large families are a drain on the economy," is to say, "Your tax dollars do not pay for my children's education, food, medical care, or housing." I also like to point out that MY LARGE FAMILY is doing our part to solve the social security imbalance in this country. ::snort::

I realized during this past week if America goes to nationalized health care, I will not be able to say, "Your tax dollars don't provide for my children." Hmmm....I further predicted to friends and Mike that if America goes to more nationalization of these services, there will first be complaints about how large families "use more resources" and then there will be pressure to limit family size for the "good of the economy".

I didn't expect these thoughts to be shared quite so quickly or blatantly. I was SHOCKED at the gym this a.m to hear Nancy Pelosi explain that the BAIL OUT/stimulus package contains dollars for contraceptives because, "The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now..." Speaker Pelosi goes on to say that, "...contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government." She said she has, "No apologies. . . we have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy."

A friend actually sent me the above link and said, "I believe you predicted this". For the most part I stay away from politics on my blog. I do not want to drive folks away from Christ who I long to share more than any one political view. Comments generated by my reading choice, the executive orders concerning abortion coming out of Washington DC, my study of PS 127 and these comments by Speaker Pelosi convince me that this trend to devalue children will continue. I've watched this trend for 20 years. Regardless of your personal life choices...all who name the name of Christ should be able to agree on the fact that the Bible calls Children a BLESSING...again regardless of how many you have, how you educate them etc.

Our leaders want to blame America's Economic woes on CHILDREN? Shame on them. Yes, I realize that the quotes I shared do NOT quote Pelosi saying "children are at fault" but that is certainly the way it was being reported on various news channels this a.m. I have a newsflash:

America's citizens/states are in this situation because we have an
addiction to debt and spending....not because of anything any child has
done. Speaker Pelosi feels that a "consequence" of this downturn is to
limit children in America? I submit that it would make more sense to QUIT
OVERSPENDING at the personal, local, state and national levels.

Let me submit that Children are GOOD for our economy (if you wish to think in those terms):

  1. My large family spends MORE on expendable products that the average family of 4. Therefore, we help our economy.
  2. I pay property taxes that go towards the education of America's children, and yet I do not send my children to their schools. My large family helps the economy.
  3. Many in our large family work at a young age....they are productive members of this economy.
  4. We spend, we save...we simply don't do debt.
  5. My children and dh who work pay taxes - lots of taxes - which certainly helps the government to continue spending and helps to keep Social Security afloat.

Are you aware that JAPAN is telling it's citizens to have more children (as reported on FOX news this a.m.)? They've realized that Children are NOT bad for the economy. I pray that Americans slow down and think about the rhetoric before we continue to throw willy-nilly spending at an economic problem. If we want to see lasting stimulus to our economy we are going to have to address the issues that got us to this place.....plain and simple. I know many are struggling. I know that many saw their retirement savings take a huge slide. I sympathize and pray for real solutions to be voted on. I pray for our leaders (of both parties) to have wisdom as they seek to fix this problem.

CHILDREN did not create this economic climate...."adults" did.

Confessions

"Hello. My name is De'Etta, and I'm a blog-aholic..."

I have wondered if it's a sign of blog addiction when your children commonly are heard saying, "Mom, take a blog photo!" or if you think, "Hmmm....we better go to the park, I need to blog"....or....

Ok - all - JUST KIDDING! It should be apparent that I DO have boundaries in place for my blogging time...which is why y'all get 7 posts in ONE day.....because I'm not busy this afternoon.

Seriously, I love Rick's Doodles. Go check him out. Now, I really must bring this post to an end and go open my BIRTHDAY GIFTS! ::snort::

Winner!

We had planned to pick a winner from Our Interactive Christmas Quiz/Letter on the 24th of Jan.....a day late...but here we are. Jamin chose the number and the lucky winner is Gilda. Gilda - if you know my personal email will you send me the email you'd prefer to have your $25 gift certificate sent to? If not, use the email in the side bar. I'll remember to check.

Thanks to all who played along. This idea allowed me to conquer my fear of the Christmas letter. Maybe it will become an annual event. LOL

Last night I collapsed. I have no idea why...but I went to bed at 7:30 p.m. and didn't wake up until 4:30 this a.m. Mike and the kids watched a couple of Netflix movies. We'll do gifts and more ice cream cake tonight.
I had refreshments for Fellowship hour today. It was hilarious. I got up early. I had everything ready. I promptly FORGOT it was my week during the sermon. While I was greeting folks and inviting them to the Fellowship Hall - I remembered. I RAN across the street to set things out. We have most gracious parishioners. The kids were excited as I took things we've not had around here much....figured we could enjoy a taste of them and yet not have them HERE forever.....brownies with cream cheese frosting, chex mix....no fruit at all. I think it surprised those who know me best. ::snort::
I taught RE this a.m. We had a lot of fun. I'll have to get photos up.
We covet your prayers on various fronts this week. I'm debating and may put a prayer list in the side bar.

Jared's Gift

Jared chose to hold off on his birthday gifts until my birthday this year. He felt like gifts so quickly after Christmas was "greedy". So he waited. He has been asking to have his "bike fixed". Mike and I discussed the fact that he is now 6'2" and that his bike is woefully small for him. We didn't want to go out and pick one out without asking him...but he agreed that he'd like having an adult bike.

Off we went....

If You Are On Facebook....

You saw the cryptic message that I nearly wet my pants when I walked into a dark house Friday night and a zillion kids jumped out at me. (Yes, Mel, all my own children. ::snort::)

Mike and I went out to eat. He chose to stay at Outback even though the wait would be long. That was a bit out of character. We had a nice dinner. I had enough points to eat that I enjoyed a very nice dinner. We even shared a dessert - something we never do.

As we got up to come home Mike asked, "Do you need to go to the bathroom before we leave?" He NEVER asks me that. I'm pretty capable of remembering these details on my own. Later, he confessed that he wanted to call home when I went to the bathroom. I didn't go.

On the way home I wanted to talk to Mike about some theology issues. As he pulled down our alley he accidently hit the horn. He pulled in to the driveway and started to get out of the car. I said, "Stop, don't you dare get out of the car. I'm spilling my guts here and you are just going to get OUT?" We sat and talked in the driveway 5 - 10 minutes until his cell phone rang. I asked if he was duty chaplain. He is....but I heard JOSIAH'S voice on the cell phone. That was a bit odd.

Well.....he told Josiah we were about home. We walked in and SURPRISE.....poor kidlets. They'd decorated and been waiting on the trampoline all night. They heard us come in and then waited and waited in the dark.

I HAD to eat MORE DESSERT.....oh I tell you I was stuffed.

We visited...we played mafia....we had 1/2 of my ice cream cake..... I felt very loved.

Josiah made these posters up, each one is covered with special notes from different kids...

Friday Sights

Jamin's laminated license came in the mail. We laughed that it expires on 20 Feb. He'll have to turn it in to get a "non-provisional" license as he'll be 18......

"Mom, I used your BeaUtiful lip stuff!"

I picked up produce at Deja's house. I'm still debating how best to make produce work for us now that we aren't running a co-op. I was getting two shares and then taking any extra fruit that we needed from the extra basket.....now I'm buying two shares but I'm running out of fruit and yet I know that I don't need MORE veggies. What to do. It's been a month so I need to figure this out. LOL In Feb I may try alternating co-ops...one week with THIS one and one with the one where you pick exactly what you need.....or I may try to simply ADD the other one to this weekly one...but I'm trying to cut our budget too. ::snort::

Sherri, a local friend, took me out to lunch in anticipation of my birthday - which was Saturday.

Mike took the kids out birthday shopping for both Jared (who delayed his gifts) and me.

Mike told me he wanted to take me out for dinner. I hesitated as the older boys try to have Friday nights off and I enjoy having family night on Fridays....but Mike and I hadn't been out alone in over a month....Josiah hadn't mentioned coming over.... We went....and I'll write another post to share the rest of the evening.

Surprise!

This blog has been hijacked!

As some of you might know, January 24 is a special day of the year for us in the G household. It's a time when we celebrate and thank God for someone who's known to us as mom and to others as De'Etta.

What do you say about someone who fills her days with serving others? This woman of God extends the hand of love everywhere she goes, on the good days, on the bad days, and the normal, nothing-new days.

We want to say thank you for being the mom that you are!

Happy birthday!

Rumors and Such

Mike called this afternoon to tell me that there is a rumor going around that I have a birthday coming up "soon". Guess that one is true. ::snort:: He's making one of his famous ice cream cakes for me. The younger ones were glad to hear that Dad is going to take them shopping tomorrow.

I had checked out this giant, paper back book from the library. Today my very own hardcover copy arrived courtesy of Paper Back Swap (link in sidebar).

Our 25th Wedding Anniversary is coming up. I was excited today at a PAC meeting to see that it falls on a 3 day weekend. We aren't sure what we'll do. For our 20th we rented a cabin out in the wilds of Alaska....but the girls are no longer living with us and so I don't know that we'll go away alone.....we shall see. The idea of actually having Mike HOME and OFF DUTY for an anniversary is exciting to contemplate. I think it happens about once every five years. ::snort::

One of "my ladies" - as in PWOC ladies - is taking me to lunch tomorrow to celebrate my birthday.

I got to talk to Mom and Dad tonight.

Krista called to let me know that Clif bars and Luna bars have been added to the peanut butter recall list...evidently she is fielding LOTS of calls on this whole thing at work.

*Who Needs Television?

Josiah's jump (fast forward to 2:34 on the bar). It was a 6,000 feet free fall and then the chute opens at 4,000 feet up.

*Based on Josiah's comments, I guess jumping from a plane 10,000 feet above ground level provides a good answer when someone says, "You don't have a TV? What do you do with your time?" ::snort::

"I can't believe I did it!"

The day got a wild start.....I didn't go where I expected to go and I DID end up going to do a walk through on the new chapel. They asked me to jot down everything that I thought needed to be fixed. Once you take possession of a new military building you cannot have anything fixed for a year. I found 3 pages of things I think they need to address. BUT the new chapel is going to be beautiful and such a GIANT leap up in comfort etc.....though I hate to see our old WW2 chapel go.

ANYWAY - I didn't think we'd get school done - but we did. AND I got to hear the above title too.... Zander finished his knight book. Yes, the lapbook is properly folded and off the vise.

Photobucket
Cover - he was so excited he went for my camera and took the photo himself. LOL
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket
Our finished lapbook from Unit 1. I had to drag Zander to sit and work on this, but he is very pleased with the finished product. Maybe he'll be more interested in future ones?
Photobucket

Meanwhile, Nolan is feverishly practicing to be able to write his name in cursive in a tiny spot before his 10th birthday - the day he gets his personal military i.d. Yes, I realize most teach this in 3rd grade...but I've discovered that many of my boys are simply not ready for it then. Photobucket

It's been a full day. A great day. I need to go get ready to run to base. This is our second week of our new PWOC study on the Psalms of Ascent. I really love digging into the Psalms. I also love that several ladies have asked how to make the study "deeper" than the written study. YES!

That's MY Big Brother

Josiah dropped by this afternoon to fill out his taxes. Our internet connection is more dependable than the one at the apartment.

He also brought the DVD of his jump for the little ones to see. Photobucket

Oy Vey, Zander was speechless.

Photobucket

Stacia on the other hand had a terribly serious question, "Why did they throw my brother out of the plane?"

Jared told her, "He was naughty and wouldn't wear his seatbelt." ::snort::

Oh great! I asked Jared what we will do if our move requires a plane trip. He told me that she'd be good and wear her seatbelt.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Jared is quite colorful this a.m. and refuses to show me the "best bruise". His loose teeth are tightening back up. His nose is still sore...but I don't think it is broken. ::snort::

....and this is FUN? I'm not so sure about the basketball but the visiting was fun. Deja and I....maybe discussing some fans tendency to make a ruckus.....but um...I am not this short in real life. I'm quite sure I'm Deja's height.

Photobucket

OK, lousy photo, but I wanted one of Deja and me.

Cindy, these are taken with the regular smaller lens that comes with the Nikon D70. I do think that if we are going to continue taking sports photos we need to invest in a mongo lens like you did. The big ones gets closer but is fuzzy on sports mode and is hard to focus with action.
