Super Size Saturday - ROAD TRIP!!!

I'm excited to read the tips that you share with me today! Please don't let me down. Regardless of your family size, if you've ever taken a road trip with children, or went on a road trip as a child, please share your tips for a successful road trip with children.

  • License Plate Game
  • ABC Game (find the letters)
  • I spy
  • Audio Books
  • Set $ amount each a.m. for treats at gas stations (but this was before we changed our eating plan and before we had 9 children - back when we had 4 and .25 each would buy a nice treat).
  • Atlas to highlight as we travel
  • Backpack with markers, coloring sheets
  • Cheap $ store toys and activities to add to backpack each day when needed
  • Carrot sticks are great traveling snacks
  • Dried apples are great traveling snacks
  • When we are organized we've found picnic lunches at rest areas are a great break on a long travel day....when we aren't the Golden Arches serve the same purpose
  • Slug Bug (but this can get out of hand)
  • Leave early in the a.m. to have time to swim at night

What about you? Do you have some tips for eating on the road? What about non-messy snacks? What do you do to make the hours go faster? What are some of your favorite audio books for travel? What else can we do to make the thousands of miles on the road a fun family memory to be cherished and not simply an evil to endure? Do you have a top 10 list of things to avoid on a road trip with children? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Write a post (or link on you've written in the past), come back and sign Mr. Linky so we can all read your thoughts.

Prayers Please

Arielle and I seem to have come down with some sort of flu like yuck. Jared wasn't feeling well last night but has been fine today. I'm praying for the same. Thanks for joining your prayers with ours. We really are in crunch time.

Books, books, books.....and more books

Our moving funny of the day has to do with books. I stepped into the shower. I knew a friend was coming to pick up the ceiling jack thingy. She had said she'd like to take all my homeschooling books and get them to the freebie table at Mom's Night Out. I forgot to mention that to Jared. He gave her a stack of books that were on the table when she asked.... They were ones I'd just listed into Paperback Swap (link in sidebar I think). Instead of Easy Grammar she got Ted Dekker, Redwall, Jill Churchill... I've been laughing all day at the style of homesechooling she must have thought we did. ::snort:: Taking the books to MNO on the 18th will ensure that I make it....Bre flies in that day too...but I really do want to make it to one more Mom's Night Out before we move.

OK - books.....I have listed 58 books on my bookshelf at Paperback Swap. If you are a member, feel free to check them out. Some are new or review books. Some are ones that I got through PBS and are, therefore, older. What isn't claimed "soon" will soon be taken to Goodwill or donated to our library. My buddy name on PBS is De'Etta G.

Moving Moment

moving project

"Leaving behind a broken rocking chair in which the first-born was soothed to sleep, a piano around which there was caroling at Christmas, a rusty tricycle- whatever embodies special memories and experiences - can feel like an amputation. It is the loss of a segment of family continuity, of personal history, the loss of a fragment of self." Audrey McCollum, The Trauma of Moving - as quoted in After the Boxes are Unpacked by Susan Miller, founder of Just Moved Ministries.

Last Saturday I removed all the family photos from our hallway. I plan to put the photos in an album as I'm sure we'll have less wall space in Japan. I hope to get some family pictures taken during grad weekend and make some sort of collage/setting for our new wall but not individual 11 x 14's of each child, girls photo, boys photo, family photo, Townsend photo, Goecker photo...you get the idea. ::snort::

All that is left in the hallway - and I think I will find a place to hang these in the new home - are our wedding vows, our oneness contract, and a photo I couldn't bring myself to remove - yet.

Grrrrrr...owl!

We were sitting in a restaurant (as we had no kitchen yesterday). I heard a little growl sound. The man at the table next to us started laughing.

Zander: "Mom, see that beautiful woman?"

Me: "Yes?"

Zander: "When I saw her, I went *grrrowl*."

Me: "Zander that is a disrespectful way to treat women."

Zander: "That's what Bugs Bunny and the Hunter do when they see a beautiful woman."

Me: "Huh?"

I told Mike later that I need sequels for Squire and the Scroll. Josiah told Mike that he'd better have that talk earlier with Zander.

BTW, the lady was probably a bit alarmed at the growl, but was smiling when she heard the conversation. What lady wouldn't like to know such a charming young man finds her beautiful?
