In this corner: Servant Number One - the 2 qt crock - busily cooking away chick peas (garbanzo beans) to be added to salads for extra fiber and protein, and to make hummus. This appliance joined our household one winter day in AK - the "day after Christmas sale" - $5.
In this corner: Servant Number Two - the trusty ole rice steamer. This is a FRIVOLOUS appliance but one I use a LOT. I wanted one when I noted that all my favorite Chinese restaurants had them. One day our BX in MT had one mis-marked. I carried it to the manager to let her know that it was mis-marked and to find the correct price. She was in a SNIT and insisted that the marked price was correct....she wouldn't listen to me...so I bought it at the mis-marked price...paying 1/4 of the retail price for the thing. Today, it contentedly steamed up 8 cups of rice for dinner and to be used for lunches and stir fries throughout the week.
And finally: the oldest servant in our home - Servant Number Three - my workhorse - 6 qt Rival Crockpot. This poor crock pot has served me for over 23 years. The handle is melted. I think one of our movers stepped on it this last move because the plastic top has several long cracks running through it. I suspect it no longer cooks efficiently because of the cracks...but I'd like to find a new one of the same size and shape so I'd have two crocks for pot. Though the electric part of this one works....maybe I simply need a new lid for this one. Yes, I have a very hard time replacing anything that still has a semblance of life left in it. Oh, I know, it's not one of the cool colors...but nothing says late 70's/early 80's like harvest autumn orange. Here it heats up last week's BBQ beef. I must have doubled the honey because it was very sweet. Jamin mentioned it would make the base of a nice sweet and sour...so I added pineapple and served it over rice tonight. ::snort::

I have to ask about your rice cooker...can you get all the rice out and what kind is it.
We have a cheapie one from Wally-World and it cooks fine, but I can never get all the rice out of the bottom and it seems like such a waste.
Also, does it handle brown rice or wild rice as well? I have thought, several times, about getting one but not sure I can justify another appliance. Where do you store it? Do you keep it somewhere nearby?
Does your family eat white or brown rice???
I need to buy a rice cooker. We eat rice all the time and many times I"m rushing to make rice to go with something that is ready in the crockpot.
My crockpot isn't quite as loved as yours... but close. We had the lid dropped and shattered - it cost something like $10 to replace... sigh... so hold on tight to the glass lids.
What would we do without our servant girls?
I sometimes wonder which would have been easier to deal with, appliances with their mechanical foibles or servant girls and their love lives...
That's my Rival Crockpot! LOL I had mine since I'd moved out of my parents house, 21 years ago...and it was well used at that time by my mother. I loved this crockpot. It finally kicked the bucket last year. I actually mourned over it. {g} I haven't found a crockpot that is quite as good yet. ~Yvonne
OH yes...this is wonderful. It has a seperate pot that fits in for the rice (like a crock pot). It steams the rice and then will keep it warm and MOIST for hours and hours....because before this I would forget the rice or cook it to early and it would dry out.
Kathy - I only use brown rice and wild rice and it does just fine. I do sometimes add a bit more water than it calls for...but last night I tried doing the "exact" water and it was fine. I did this because the boys are doing more of the prep stuff lately and "a bit of water" means different things to them - so our rice can be to mushy....so a bit extra water or fine and the denser rices do well.
I keep it in a cupboared in the kitchen...when I had more counter space in other houes it was on the coutner...well the advent of the Bosch sent it to the cupboard. LOL
Yvonne...I'll try to baby mine along until you report back on a good replacement. ::snort::
Don't you know that Autumn Harvest Orange is back in style? If you wait long enough styles and colors go in cycles (okay, I don't like to wait for clothes to come back in style, but appliances are okay).
Diann
Lime and Avacado green too. LOL
