Dentist Onsen?

They ASKED. They said this is the ONE thing they wanted to be sure they did in Japan. They wanted to visit an Onsen. We noticed this a.m. that many of the local businesses are going to be closed until 2 Jan or 9 Jan.....and the girls leave 2 Jan. We headed out today. I knew Stacia would come with us. I wasn't so sure about Arielle. Mike told her, "Go, it's a girl thing." ::snort::

Ah...before Stacia had a clue.

All had a good time. Stacia was shocked at first.... "Mom, there are naked people in here." Once she got over that she had a blast. I'm glad we did this. Arielle says it wasn't as bad as she expected and she'll do it again with me.....

My plan is once a week, while Mike's deployed to mark the passing of time. The boys plan to stay home and play Play Station once a week - fully clothed - to mark the passing of time. ::snort::

Stacia is convinced this is a dentist onsen.

Sis:

If we ever get over there AND if the towels that cover you are long enough to hid me..... :) I'd love to try an onsen.

Love Stacia's comment. love/prayers --- Mom T.

this is not something I would ever try if I were in Japan. I had a hard enough time with folks walking around naked in the dressing rooms at schwimbads in Germany

I'm with Renee on this one (LOL). Pretty sure this is NOT something that would make my top 10 list of things to do (LOL)! You'll have to do some more convincing...... VBG

Your timing for an onsen was very appropriate in Japanese culture. We have a visit to our big public bath planned for the 31st. In addition to cleaning our bodies, getting hair cuts and nice clothes ready to visit the in-laws, we also do BIG CLEANING. Rather like spring cleaning in the freezing cold winter. I shouldn't say "we" there, as we don't do as much as needs to be done. Then Japanese relax for 2-3 days and watch TV, eat mikans, go to a temple/shrine, visit in-laws and stay warm. We, on the other hand, always plan too many things!

And I'm so glad that ALL your girls got to go! Now you will have Arille and Stacia to go with you if your adult friends aren't free!!

Well....I don't think I'd try to convince you Renee or Cindy...the fewer Americans at the onsen, the better. ::snort:: We scout the parking lot for other Y license plates to make sure we're the only Americans. ::snort::

I grew up taking group showers in PE and at sports, I spent quite a few years living in dorms...this is really not much different. LOL

Kim....I wondered if there was a reason it was so busy that afternoon. Thanks for the insight.

Stacia woke up this a.m. and said, "Let's go to the onsen, Mom"...so I have one convert. I don't think Arielle will want to do it all the time...but she has said it would be fun once a month or so. LOL

Brave girls. Love Stacia's comment. It's hard for me to imagine this but not for the naked people (well not only that reason!) reasons but the snow pictures above and then thinking of getting in the water. I'm guessing it's super warm though it just feels cold through the screen. LOL

Jodi - the onsen is the PERFECT way to combat the cold. The tubs are HOT - hotter than westerners can stand for long....there are some cold tubs, saunas....and this onsen has a tub you stand in and get jets from all directions...great for sore joints...and then "pulsing" tub....which is also supposed to be good for joints....electrical pulses...strangest feeling.

BUT anyway - I enjoyed the onsen in August but NOW - ah....

Sis: If I ever get in one I want the tub I am in to stay HOT for a long time..... do they do that?

Also, I like the idea of going when not to many whites are there or at least not whites I'll be seeing again. :):) love/prayers --- Mom T.

Mom the temps in the tubs are consistent. The "tubs" are like big hot tubs...some with "lanes," this new onsen has a few individual cedar tubs - like western baths....but most are like big hot tubs.
