Energy Saving Appliances

After 27 years of marriage, I finally did it. In an effort to conserve energy, I bought a pressure cooker. I have no clue what to really do with it, in the end features didn't matter, the BX had one left.....I own it.

It promises I can do our roast in 45 minutes and that is doable even for an energy conscious family like ours. ::grin::

Do send your favorite recipes for pressure cookers....maybe we can broaden our meal choices.

Tanya tells me I can bake bread in the microwave.....

I wouldn't know what to do with it either, but it sure looks pretty!

De'Etta, you will probably be overwhelmed with recipes. My mom used a pressure cooker when I was a kid and that was a long time ago:-) When we bought this house over forty years ago, we found a 6 quart Presto cooker left in the attic. We got new rubber replacements and I'm still using it, getting replacements when I need them.

Just follow the directions with your cooker and I think you will find that you'll use it often. I fix dried beans in mine. Prepare them as you would for soaking. Put them in the cooker with enough water to allow for expansion. Seal the cooker, and bring it to a boil, letting the steam escape for just a minute. Turn it off and let set for about an hour.

Open the cooker, pour off the liquid and rinse the the beans. Return beans to the cooker and fill with clean water. If water is short, you might skip this step altogether.

Cook the beans as directed in your instructions. With mine, I cook them at medium pressure for about 45 minutes.

I have had the pressure control( that little round thing in the cover) fly out and no damage was done except that I had the liquid from cabbage rolls all over my ceiling. It hung in big drips:-)

Just follow your directions and I think that you will be delighted with the results.

Thanks for friending me on FB. Love to keep up with you.

You beat me to answering your email! I was going to suggest you go to Urban Homemaker for a pressure cooker and recipes. Marilyn has a lot of pressure cooker recipes. There's a tasty mexican shredded chicken recipe. I don't use mine much...mostly for beans and once in while chicken. But you've motivated me to dust it off and try different dishes ;-)

Sis: Also you don't have to always use as much liquid as in other cooking. Use to love using mine in Libera but have forgotten all the things I did. Read the directions that came with the unit and probably in all your cookbooks you will find other things to do.

I haven't broken down to buy one yet. I don't think I'd use it enough, since even the small ones are costly. What size is this one, because it looks like a good size to start out with?

This is 8 qt and is probably bigger than we need for most things...but it is the one that the BX had..presto. At this point, I think I'm going to continue using it a lot - the convenience of quick without the other issues with a microwave....and may well go buy the duromatic some day...but I didn't want to spend that much money having never used one and so I'd waited for years and thought of it.....then wanted to cook the roast without hours of oven use and there was ONE option at the BX. LOL

My mom uses a pressure cooker quite often, but I've never given it a try. Maybe after you gather some recipes, I might!
