History Quilt - or a timeline I can live with {vbg}
Arielle made a square with a WW1 nurse on it today. We had quite the experience searching for a picture of a nurse for her to see what they wore....evidently many nurses these days wear fish net stockings. Who would have guessed?
Nolan made a square with a soldier and a gun.
Zander made... well....he tells us it's a man hunting gorillas for the soldiers to eat. He seems to have a gorilla theme going. ::snort:: His square is the purple one with the yellow splotches on it....I'm going to need another set of squares. I ordered enough for Arielle and Nolan to do a square each week, but Zander likes to do it on some weeks and I don't want to tell him no. Oy vey - if I add another set of blocks it will be really long...or I'll have to untie it all and make it a few blocks wider too.....You know I need a new comforter for my bed...maybe I'll do a square each week too and quilt it. LOL

Was this at kit or something? Wondering since you said you ordered the squares. I thought you just bought the fabric and cut them out. It's VERY cute, btw.

I shared earlier - you must have missed it. LOL I ordered the little squares and ribbons - pre-cut and hemmed from oriental trading compnay or post or whatever that is.
It is simply the material and ribbons...no instructions or suggestions on how to use them....I got the idea from Jodi who talked about a story quilt. I turned ours into a historical event quilt....
The children are loving it....we'll do it again if they want to do it again in another year....
I was thinking it was just a fun project with not a lot of educational value until Adrienne saw it and said it was a cool TIMELINE! So...for all those who have heard me say I skip TOG's timeline - I didn't - just do it my own way. LOL
Now you've got me thinking... you said quilting. Are the squares made in a way that after it's complete it could be sewn together and possibly backed?
LOL Steph...yes, I think you could sew them together and back it. I've thought about it but I AM phobic about my machine too. LOL
The squares are hemmed and have a little hole for tying but I think you could sew them together...what do you think Jodi?
I think it is supposed to be "no sew" and that makes it great but for a permanent keepsake...maybe the next one we'd do I'd just buy the material and such because it would probably be cheaper????
KidS: Like the look of the quilt pieces you are making. Alexander, your 2G's have eaten monkey and it is ok.... just crazy when you see the fingers in the pot.
You kids are really doing a good job.
G'Pa is coming out in his wheelchair by way of a wheelchair ride to church tomorrow.
love/prayers
I guess they could be sewed but I'm happy enough with the ribbons and I can't really sew...and don't have a machine. I don't mind if we end up with lots of wall hangings here since there are lots of walls that could use some cover up of some sort, LOL.
Glad you found a timeline you can live with! Mine is supposed to be a timeline of sorts of US history and then the kids asked why we didn't do an Antarctica square when we veered off for a geography project. Now I don't know what to do but we've already got two rows, one of Native Americans and one of Explorers! I guess it's their project but like you I don't want to untie it when we get much further along!!!
Maybe I need to get another kit so one can be just US history and the other can be the other things we study this year. That's an idea and I'm pretty sure my Mother is giving me an oriental trading gift certificate for Christmas.
Maybe you ladies could tie them together into a little book....tie the corners on one side. Just a thought. That way you could keep making squares, but not have to worry about space.
I really love this idea and think we are going to work this into our studies some how. I do sew, so the wheels are turning on what we could do.
Great job, kids!
I LOVE all the ideas. I have quilts hanging all over my walls...so don't mind hanging it.
I think it would make a fun blanket...but come to think of it I'm not sure how waterproof the paint markers are....
The idea of a book would be cute too....I bet I could do a combination. Keep it as a hanging for a bit of time - maybe a year...and then when the next one comes along take it down, and retie it into a book. Easier to store...it would be like those cloth books they make for babies.
You all are such a help.
Sorry. I must have missed that part. How convenient that it's already hemmed and everything. Are the squares already sewn together, too? That would be my kind of quilt (LOL)!
Cynthia
Cindy - no. The squares have little holes in the corners and come with ribbons for you to tie them together.
