School Daze

We got a slow start this a.m. as the dishwasher broke. We were also out of granola. This meant I had to make granola and then do all the dishes by hands. Arielle and Nolan usually do breakfast clean up but I felt it was a bit much this a.m.

They set to work on their table school. I reveiwed Nolan's phonics while I did dishes. The only couch school we had left for the week was reading out of *Looking For Home*.

We had time to work on two quilt squares for the week.

Arielle chose to make a square on The Orphan Trains

Nolan's imagination was captured by our largest President...William Taft (we couldn't fit the full name on the square), who had a special bathtub built for the White House. Note that Stacia contributed to the project, giving Nolan a second chance at the tub. {G}
We are enjoying this project. I'm not sure when we'll begin the lapbooks. Tips - you can find graphics for almost anything by going to google.com and clicking "images". We've also found "templates" in some of our reading books - we make a copy and cut them out and go from there. The kids simply trace around them and fill in the details. Last week Arielle did both her squares "free hand".

Jared made up plans for a trench system for an Army. Jamin is bouncing around here like.....I don't know what....he's got a full schedule and we sort of try to give him "space" to work out the details. {G}

The kids are doing a great job on their blocks. This is really a wonderful project and I'm sure they will remember things so much better with something like this!

Super job.

I'm so glad Jodi told us about this project. Thanks, Jodi. I'm still not sure I'll get the lap book proper tackled but THIS is very doable here at home, with no one holding my hand. LOL

We got to thinking today that we should have done a President Quilt...and a state quilt and a country quilt...LOL

I thought I posted a note about the Lewis & Clark quilt book that I saw at Borders yeterday, but I must have dreamt that I posted it or maybe I posted it to someone else's blog (LOL)! Anyway. It was VERY COOL and I thought of you when I saw the book... two of the actually... one on the Upper Missouri part of the voyage and one on the Bitteroot.

QB - I do think you posted here...or I read it anyway. LOL I asked you - wherever it was if you had the name of the book and commented that this one is so easy because it's CHILD led and I don't have to do a thing - I don't even have to stitch it. BUT I would like to look at the book you found. OH and I suggested you post your find to SHS and TOG. LOL

I LOVE the Taft bathtub one! Your kids are doing such a great job.

I keep thinking of different wasy we could use ours or more that we should do. It's a bit maddening! I have to keep telling myself that this quilt is simply meant to be 48 squares of chronological U.S. history, no rabbit trails. LOL

Glad you're enjoying it too!

Jodi - I'm trying to figure out how to "annex" some rabbit trails on...ours will be 72 squares ....but maybe some pillow shams are in order. LOL

Of course look what happened when the one square got wet...I hope they aren't all like this. I'm hoping it was that the paint simply wasn't set.
