This and That

It's been cold the last week...cold to us...or to me. ::snort:: Cold enough that we've begun leaving the heat on the living floor on the lowest setting all day. That seems to take the chill off the whole house.....

It's been overcast....I'd forgotten we had mountains around us. It was a treat on Sunday to SEE the mountains. Today was a gorgeous day....until late afternoon when the chill overpowered the sun's rays.

This is a short Holiday week and so our schedule is a bit off.

Yesterday the kids had a great piano lesson. I worked on the Protestant News, as it needed to be done early. On the way to take Jared to Cross Training (PYOC), we stopped at the new bakery Tane had told us about. YUM. We must all troop in there one day soon to practice our Japanese. The owner was very appreciatitve of all we bought. The bread is HEAVENLY. I told Jared it's SO GOOD, but I'm sure it's not whole grain...he told me not to think about it and to eat it. That's a common phrase around here lately. LOL

Today was PWOC. I've been the interim Children's Ministry Coordinator and will be through Dec. I have come to love this job, but I'm committed to stepping down in December. That makes me sad...I realize the need for Children's ministry if we hope to minister to young spouses....the chapel is advertising to hire someone for his spot and I'm praying that someone will soon feel the call to step into that position. What a ministry it is. I simply think I need to be home on Tuesday a.m. in order to make steady progress with our youngest students. They aren't able to do much independent work in the homeschool room....but they love going! It's been a hard choice.

We had lunch at the food court today and were happy to be joined by others with the same idea...Susane, Ricky and Renee and Mike. Good lunch, good fellowship....

We moved our language lesson to this afternoon. Akiko surprised us with a bunch of apples - lingos (ringos but pronounced lingos). She told me the mid size red ones will work for pies....we shall see. They smell good. We surprised her with a pastry from our new favorite bakery....with a name I can't read.

Tomorrow I'll bake pies in the a.m., host our ladies for Bible Study and then we have an ecumenical Thanksgiving Service and Pie Social in the evening.

I'm not really feeling the season at this point. So.....didn't make any plans to invite friends over....but a family day will be nice. Arielle doesn't seem keen on the idea of going to the onsen after lunch. It could be because all the boys broke into a rousing chorus of, "What makes the red man red?" from Peter Pan when I suggested it. ::snort:: I really need to get busy and make some plans for Advent. The season is here even though I keep insisting 2009 can't possibly be coming to an end. What a year it has been.

A few photos from the past week
The pond is certainly showing signs of fall....and is now easy to spot from the road

It was snowing on this walk...didn't quite grasp we'd be wearing these when we ordered them from TX.

Brrr.....I begged him to put on a coat and he said, "But MOM.....I'm a TEXAN!" Which he is.

Morin Sis: :)

busy, busy, busy.... so goes the life of a home with children....

Wait a minute.... we don't have children in the home but find our lives very busy also..... :):):)

Some pretty snazzy coats.... at least they are warm.......... but the legs look cold. :(:(

How far from your place is that beautiful pond? Sure would be nice to be able to see it from your house.

Well finally! I can say a Japanese word...... lingo .. whu hu!! :)

Tell the boys and Mike that they NEED to go to an Onsen together... then we'll see how they feel. However males don't always have the same bashfull tendencies we ladies have. :):)

Goodness, Alexander has sure gotten TALL fast! Cute saying, TEXAN as in tough! :):):)

Mikhail heads to Texas today.... Dad will be taking him to the airport and requesting help for him in San Francisco to get to the right gate etc. Mikhail is very excited. Also he got a call from the $ store for an interview and it is 99% sure he will have a seasonal job to start the day after he gets back from Texas.

love/prayers -- Mom T.

"I'm a Texan." LOL The thing is, true Texans get out the winter clothes when the temps go below 50::snort:: It's us transplants that don't mind the cooler temps...

Being a Texan is all the more reason to wear a coat, I'm guessing.

Most places I've been nursery has been available (for the 5 and under crowd) during MCCW and/or PWOC. Is that what you are doing as a volunteer? Or are you having actual classes for this age group during the moms's Bible study time?.....

I TOTALLY understand not being away from the house for an entire morning every week. WHen we were in Heidelberg, I would go to MCCW once a month and bring the kids... and in Korea I was able to go weekly but only becuase Ms. Kim was at the house and she would at least be sure they were working (even though she couldn't help them).....
we want to do so much but as homeschooling moms, we have to be home :)

On an AF base we don't do childcare - ever. We aren't allowed due to the regs with the CDC....but we DO CHILDREN"S MINISTRY. So, yes, I'm teaching the classes and overseeing the homeschool room for the children....yes, most AF bases also provide children's ministry during the PWOC studies, but this one didn't for a variety of reasons. Mike has been advertising in the Prot community for someone willing to accept this as a paid position - she'd do PWOC studies and help with a MOPS room once a month - no takers. It's a contract. I believe he's going to begin advertising to the Catholic women. We don't have a base paper so getting the word out has been tough....and I really thought there would be a protestant woman who would like the little bit of income, see it as a ministry and step up. Hasn't happened. I volunteered to organize and teach through their first study so that they could begin.....

At Elmendorf I taught 4 studies a week, I attended every Tues a.m. and the girls oversaw the younger ones' school.

At Goodfellow our study was at night.

Now I realize what a prie I had to pay for all the time at Elmendorf and so I am teaching an afternoon study - and there are a few other women whose schedule that fits better.....but I don't think I'll weekly be at the "main" PWOC event....because I'm very careful about my committment to outside engagements....I'm not doing AWANA either.

I should have been clearer; the chapel didn't run the childcare for chapel groups - CDC did. Either children were dropped off at hourly care (the chapel paid for it) or they had a STACC program which means CDC brought staff and stuff on-site to run childcare at the chapel.... and again the chapel paid for it.

Deja and Cynthia beat me to the punch. Yep, we Texans don't always do well when it gets cold. We drag out the coats. In August in Alaska visiting family they were swimming in the fridgid cold lake and we Texans had on long sleeves sitting on the shore. :) Perhaps it is the little Texans. I can't get Joseph to wear a coat to save my life. He might take it to school but it is always lost later.
Hugs and Happy Thanksgiving to you all-Alaskans, Texans, Americans!
