Endless School

 There was box day...and then we had a "rolling start"... and Monday we added in the AP courses and Science. Just like that we've gone from a relaxed pace to  school from 7:00 a.m. - 4 p.m.  pace.  We have entered the "endless school" phase of the year. 

Seriously, the first couple of weeks are hard as we establish new routines, get familiar with new topics and courses, both girls are taking several online classes (each with their own set of requirements to learn)...and the AP courses are requiring daily discussions with "teacher" - that would be me.  Within a month we'll have routines down that will work well for THIS school year, the expectations in each course will be old hat and I bet we shave an hour off the day. We'll see. 

Nonetheless - EVERYONE has been posting "First Day of School" photos and it seems I was remiss not to post a first day of school picture on Monday when we went "full bore."

It looks like some odd monkish commune around here. ::snort:: Not to worry that we're stressed - we're simply nose-to-the-grindstone-focused. I have to remember they may not be available to help with projects...and they can't run out to play with grands, or see something cool in the garden...at least not this week. LOL Believe it or not THIS is a class discussion....Millie is opinionated about Beowulf! 

No, life isn't all about academics and we don't school simply for the academics...but then again if one IS going to homeschool academics do need to be a priority...and so we are working back into a balance that will work well for this year. It's a familiar dance...thus begins my 33rd year of homeschooling; and this year I have grands schooling too - but that will be another post.  Both girls are doing well with the pace. 

Tuesday's Garden

 Tuesday.....the boys have work. The girls have school - their work. Michael worked on storage solutions in the garage. I puttered in the garden and took Dad to Physical Therapy. 

We have cherries. The Rainier are sweet. The Meteor are tart.  I  will pick them soon.  We don't even have any apple or plum blossoms and the peach trees died! 

For today's #everybitcountschallenge  I pulled Kale. 

I dried it all and ended up with 2 gallons of dried kale and 1/2 a gallon of dried kale chips. 

What am I going to do with dried kale? I'm not 100% sure but we weren't that thrilled with frozen kale. I rehydrated a piece and it tastes like kale. I can rehydrate and use it in breakfast scrambles. I can munch on it. I can crumble it like an herb which I can throw into EVERYTHING....the last couple of mornings I mixed a handful into Grandpa's avocado toast. LOL 

I put a brown layer on top of the green layer in the bed I'm building up. I've begun putting more green into it. Many of our kitchen scraps we would compost go to the animals. 

Yes, that really is IT for the day. LOL  School and projects have taken over. LOL 

Stacia Turned 16 Today - WHUT?

 Stacia turned 16 on the 16th! That hardly seems possible! But there you have it! Our baby is 16. 

When we began to talk to select a date to celebrate August's birthdays (Stacia's) and family get together we realized,  CyRi was going to be out of town Stacia's birthday week,  the week before and the week of the wedding were full, and BreZaak had company the first weekend. Stacia opted not to have a big family dinner. CyRi's wedding will check the family celebration box quite well.  We planned to go out for a birthday dinner at the location of her choice and then do gifts and cake here at home. 

As we began to execute the plan, various ones called to see what we were doing and ask to join us...turned out to be great fun at Sakura Sushis - a wonderful Japanese restaurant in the Valley.

Sixteen - in the blink of an eye 

Benny was the official birthday helper. Weather help was needed with candles, clothing or gift transporting - he was johnny on the spot. 

Stacia got lovely gifts...lots of cake decorating tools, work out clothes, painting/crafting supplies, runners backpack, laptop (WHUT Alex has upped his gift giving game) and this fantastic survival kit...

The wearable blanket she purchased for Allie's birthday was such a hit, Allie got her one for her birthday. LOL It looks like some odd order of monks around here. LOL 

Happy Birthday sweet girl. You truly bless us all - we couldn't think of a better caboose to this crazy family train. 

Yard WORK - A Family Endeavor

When  CoRielle brought the girls home for berry picking, they and Jamin stayed to help with the fun we were having!  Jamin eventually went to show a house; CoRielle stayed for dinner. It turned into a fun and productive day for all. Compromises are fun...I'm still hoping for another berry picking trip. 

Michael and Alex were clearing brush and trimming the limbs from the bottom of the trees they planned to fell - all dead from spruce beetles.

I had begun harvesting the garden. My hope is to make way for some of the slower growing plants to thrive. It's a race to see if the beets and beans will produce. I planned to turn one of the current beds into a lasagna bed...My no-dig lasagna beds are producing much more food than the traditional raised beds. This raised bed was about 1/3 full of dirt and so I'm filling it with layers of green and brown compost and giving it a better chance at production next year.  I had cleared it and harvested cabbage (lots of leaves for the lasagna bed) when the crew showed up. 

I weeded around the beds and discovered lots of slugs hiding in the chickweed preparing to broach the walls of the beds. Dastardly pests. Benny arrived in time to happily  help spread Epsom salt around beds and plants.

Yes, I DID seem to grow a lot of the garden for the chickens and rabbit. This cabbage DID have lots of slugs...seemed fair to let the girls enjoy it...which will produce wonderful eggs for us. 

Michael is a great grandpa. He took the time to fashion a little bunch of brush Benny could drag just like Uncle Axe.

I feel  this is not safe...Michael is trying to convince me it's normal. He stepped back, lost his balance and fell, and turned the chain saw off when he landed. I, of course, kept taking photos while helpfully yelling, "Turn the saw off! Are you ok?" Yes, we have had plenty of talks about buying chaps and such...what's a wife to do? There was lots of laughter. Sometimes its best to simply laugh.

Benny discovered tree sap - and was not impressed - at all. 

I pulled vines and brought them to Dad. He harvested the peas for us and then took the vines to the chickens. 

Benny was impressed with the sprinkler INSIDE the greenhouse. To his left are cucumbers, to his right the new lasagna bed. He is getting "rained" on and LOVES it. 

Today's harvest included cabbage, chard, broccoli, cucumbers, radishes and KALE. 

After I sent things home with CoRielle I still had lots of kale left. I planted 1/2 the plants I planted last year. I thought about it and decided to try drying kale. I dried 7 trays. We'll see how it turns out.  This is todays contribution to the #everybitcountschallenge.

We were so very thankful to our kids here at home, and Jamin and CoRielle for their help today! We still are NOT going to get all our home projects done - but we're making progress. 

*Note - the kale is great. I was able to reconstitute it and it tastes like fresh kale. I threw some crumbled kale into Grandpa's avocado toast and he didn't notice it. I think it will be great to use for breakfast scrambles, soups and maybe I can sneak it into smoothies too. It's much less offensives when dried and crumbled. LOL 

Berry Picking 2021

 It has been raining a LOT.  

Fall is probably here near.   There is absolutely NO WAY we will get our projects done before winter. We accept that. However, last winter, the snow caught us before the garden was fully harvested, all the dead trees felled, or yard furniture and toys put away for the season.  We have had a busy July and August...company, fish camp,  one wedding and another by the end of August.... We planned to spend this week working around our place...and it RAINED...all day....every day.  We've had appointments for Michael or Grandpa in the rare breaks of rain. 

Church was cancelled on Sunday.  Sunshine was predicted.  Alex would be home to help. Michael began to plan to fell  trees. No one should work with chainsaws in downpours. Safety first and all. 

BreZaak suggested a blueberry picking trip Sunday afternoon. I SO wanted to go. I also KNEW why Michael wanted us to work and that he would not go berry picking. We reached a compromise. I stayed home (this is a help in itself as he could focus solely on work and not divide is attention between work and caregiving). Grandpa can't climb around the mountains picking berries. We sent the girls with the berry picking crew. This allowed us to get work done AND get berries...and they enjoyed the time in the mountains with the family.

I have plans to make more blueberry jam. I hope to get out to pick some more this week. We shall see. I needed quick right now...these berries went into the freezer to be used later for smoothies, snacking, pancakes, muffins....

I'm loosely participating in an instagram challenge....#everybitcountschallenge. The idea is to preserve something every day of August.  While I'm not going to make the daily challenge (started late) I do love the focus on putting just little bits away - and it adds up. This was Monday's put away. 

TGIF

There is a canning challenge going around homestead circles...the challenge is preserve a little bit every day in the month of August. I am NOT doing well with that challenge...frankly, I'm not sure pulling out all the canning stuff to do a "bit" fits my lifestyle.  BUT I love the emphasis of  doing a bit throughout the month, rather than loads and loads in September. LOL  I have been making a conscious effort to use our garden produce as it comes on rather than waiting for the end of the season to "put it up."   Today, I put up 7 quarts of dill pickles....not a huge amount, but a start. I'm hoping to get more cucumbers - we shall see. It's not been a huge year for the garden. I think all the rain is resulting in lots of lush, green, foliage but little actual produce.

I had planned to have tea with a friend today in town... I had been trying for several weeks to meet with her and was excited we finally had a date we were both in town and neither of us had obligations. I told the girls early in the week if they had all their school done I could drop them to explore the Friday Fling while we had tea. 

We were informed just hours before our "date,"  that the friend we'd had lunch with yesterday was exposed to someone who has tested positive for Covid. Brenda works with the at risk community.  Out of an abundance of caution she opted to postpone our date.

To get out of the house requires a lot. We'd made arrangements for the boys to be back from their study and home with Grandpa. We'd gotten all our work finished early so we could go play. Michael got home and was surprised to see us all sitting dejectedly around the house instead of racing to town.  He said none of us have been exposed to a positive case and we should go ahead and go to the Friday Fling, an outdoor event.  I was glad he shooed us out. It had been a let down to a busy week. 

Next week is the last Friday Fling of the season - I suppose THAT could be a marker that summer is truly over in our little town.  We went to a coffee trailer and got teas, and sipped them while we walked around outside for an hour or so. 

We were talking to a young lady Allie knows when BRENDA popped up. ::snort::  She had also decided to go ahead and go downtown. I told her Michael had shooed us out of the house. Thinking back on this she and I should have just opted to get our drinks and walk outside... 

The Friday Fling is a weekly outdoor summer celebration hosted by our town.  When I first heard of it, I thought of the farmer's markets I'd known in other locations and, frankly, was disappointed. There isn't a lot of produce to buy...but there ARE lots of food trucks, craft vendors, and entertainment.  It has become something Stacia and I look forward to attending. We've not made it often this year - its been raining on many Fridays and as I mentioned we don't drop and go as easily as we have in previous years. I was happy this worked out. I have been looking for a light plate to match the ones I bought a couple of summers ago. I haven't run into the vendor. Brenda told me he was HERE this week.  I bought one more.  I had been planning to put up towel bars, all the electrical plates etc in our bathroom - but we've since gone with an ADA look rather than a cabin look. ::snort:: Michael suggested I buy one for the nook anyway. 

I have been wanting to buy pretties for the garden and yard. Our focus has been functional and I'm at the point I'd like to start thinking beyond functional. I'm convinced we'll never really be done with all the "infrastructure" around here. I haven't gotten out a lot and so my spending money has been growing...and I got this today. 

I haven't decided if I'll put it in the garden or the yard. I think mounting it on one of the orchard fence posts may work....though I'm not 100% sure HOW to mount it. LOL 

We picked up pizzas and headed home....we watched the last two episodes of Home Before Dark! That is a GOOD series if you've not watched it....well we enjoy it anyway and it hasn't offended our sensibilities...
