Work Day

Dad had a rough night, which translates to Michael and I having a rough night.  He has picked up some bug.  I am usually up at 0500 but as we were up at 0230 I slept in...and I needed to be up so that I could get Dad ready and the girls and I could leave the house by 0840. We picked up the pace and made it...Stacia needed to be across town at her nany gig by 0900. Allie and I went out for our Bible Study. We are beginning a study titled Faith over Perfection. We enjoyed our first week.

Allie and I ran to Freddie's and did some shopping in the hour after we were done and before Stacia needed picked up.  While we were checking out I remembered we are having a houseful again this Sunday and I  am going to be busy Friday and Saturday. I should have given more mental energy to a menu before snatching the hour to shop. LOL

We had agreed with Michael to spend the afternoon doing yard work.  The weather has turned nice and we need to continue making progress on garden projects NOW.  I knew I had a lot of seedlings to up- plant. I asked Michael to drill a hole in the bottom of all these cups....some day I'll have pretty pots from a garden supply store. I do like being able to take a sharpie and mark what is planted, and not worrying if they break when I'm transplanting....maybe I'll stay with the cups.  LOL

Michael and I got out into the garden and surveyed the spot. We have plans - BUT we are NOT going to get it all done this year and need to prioritize. Now that I've discovered how well the monitor will work and Grandpa is routinely taking long afternoon naps, I will be able to spend more time outside than I could in the past 2 years.  This is the garden plot.....PLEASE keep in mind if there is not a garden bed over the spot, there is black plastic or old carpet...and still the weeds!

You can really see the winder damage here. But look at the greenhouse in the back which we've Michael replaced. It's working great. The two beds in the foreground are twisted beyond help. Arielle removed the frames. We'll use the wire for vertical growing. The pvc is done for.  About mid-photo is our second home-built frame...also smashed beyond easy useability. The hoop house in the back can be utilized this year. You can see a bit of the slope of the garden here. It slops East to West and North to South. We plan to terrace or level it out - but we may end up dealing with it another year if we need to get the pumpkins and squash in before we can finish the job.

There is CARPET under all that grass!

The tires you see in the photos are strategically placed to hold down plastic in the garden. The past two years I planted flowers in them. I am not ready to plant potatoes until we decide if we are terracing or leveling the open areas.  Michael suggested I grow as many potatoes as I can in the tires. I could start them now and then plant the rest once we figure out which spot to put them in this year. We weeded the tires...and were surprised to find cottonwood trees in the tires. We had used new soil and compost in them, they are on top of black plastic.  As we traced the roots we found big roots under the plastic.

Tracing from one tree in a tire, under the black plastic, outside of the fence to a bit cottonwood and Michael finally just cut it off. I feel like I should take that and make it into some sort of garden art.

While we began bringing the garden back to life the girls raked leaves. Arielle and the boys showed up and joined in the work. We sure appreciated the girls' and the young gents help today.

Helpfully posing for the blog. LOL

Allie quipped, "Guitar rake..."

Putting some heart into her work.  Notice how green the yard is getting.

LOOK AT THIS! We have new asparagus! It's back. I'm excited. I have no idea how to grow it...but it came back. I guess we can just cut and eat this. Last year I let it all go to seed, hoping to get a more robust batch of asparagus. I'd really like to eat some though. Thoughts?

Benny is simply not excited about my asparagus!

The girls got busy up-planting pumpkins (2 kinds), yellow squash, and Chinese beans. There may have been other things. I still have melons, squash and sprouts that will need up-planted.

Arielle and I went ahead and moved some cold weather starts from the greenhouse to the garden. We are not predicted to have frost between now and the end of May. I'm hoping. We moved lettuce, cabbage, Bok choy, Brussel sprouts and some green onions. I direct seeded spinach and lettuce.
This green square is one of my late-night shopping surprises. I love it. The sheet that came with it tells me which color circle to use depending on what I'm planning. I'm hoping this helps with spacing...I want to maximize space, but I don't want to crowd plants. The orange stick/spoon has inches marked on it and works well.  There's a funnel for seeds but it seems more trouble than it's worth.

My notebook and stash of seeds show I still have plenty of things to direct sow. MIchael decided the quickest way to get me some space for transplanting tomatoes, cucumbers and beans would be to divide the hoop house where it broke and move it over to cover the beds which were inside the greenhouse that it smashed to smithereens.  Those first four arches will form the house over the warm beds.  He thinks he can also fix the other half but it will take a bit more time.  I will make sure I have starts to go into the warm house when it's ready. I think decided if we are going to level or terrace anything this year will be next. If we are doing to do that, we need it done before I plant in the spaces or we put more beds in.

The garden is a MESS! BUT this one bed has been amended and planted. I put the clear plastic sides from our first greenhouse (we've had 4 destroyed now) over the seeds. The hope is it keeps birds out, warms the soil, keeps the soils in place and helps them germinate quickly.

Look at all these seedlings the girls up-planted!

These are the ones that will need to soon be up-planted as well...unless I have a bed for them to go into. There are also another 7 trays of seeds started this week. Many of them are flowers and I may not up plant but go from the plug to various places around the property. We'll see.

The girls are champs! They don't love outside work and were happy to go inside and make Chicken Divan for dinner. I had planned on salmon but was too entrenched in dirt to break free when it was time to prep dinner.

I transplanted some spearmint. I plan to make tea with them - and smell them because - spearmint.

I also transplanted basil into this planter. I think I'll try to establish these and either another herb or some lettuce in planters that come inside under grow lights during the winter.

As we worked, I pondered Allie's question. What DO I like about gardening? When I had moved all the tools from the broken hoop house, moved all the plants back into the greenhouse, planted the bd, transplanted the herbs, I sat.  It was quite warm and humid in the greenhouse...about 85-90*.  It felt like a sauna. I liked that moment of gardening today.

I liked having us all outside working on a common goal. I liked dreaming with Michael of what I'd like the garden to eventually look like...a gazebo for tea parties, flowers, trellis', arches and pathways with wood chips to help keep the weeds down between the beds....and a chalk board, wind chimes.... I Loved knowing that soon I would be able to go out to the garden and harvest a few potatoes, or snip some onions, or greens for dinner. I do love watching things grow and the orderly rows when things are first planted.  I like having an excuse to be outside all spring/summer...and I like having a ready way for meaningful movement every day.

There are a lot of things I like about gardening....weeds are not one of them. All the WORK is daunting...but it's a good feeling to try once again to wrest civilization from the jungle.

And, even though it's nearly 10 p.m. I am going to love running a HOT bath and sinking into some epsom salts.

It's been a productive day, a good day, even a bit of fun.

Glorious Spring

Grandpa woke up several times in the night.  He had said he was nauseated and tired. He hasn't thrown up but he's made all the sounds every few hours. How? I don't know. I heard him tell a friend this afternoon he had a sore throat and headache but he hadn't mentioned them to us...

Anyway, since I WAS up early and Dad had gone back to bed, I headed out for a morning walk. I went 2.3 miles and it felt wonderful. We are going to try me going out at 0500 and see if  I can be home before Grandpa wakes up.

The rest of the morning was filled with caregiving and chick caring for me.  Michael had an appointment. I did get another 78 seeds planted.  I'm really hoping these 3 trays will germinate out here.

The "kids" - which now consist of 3 adults and a soon to be 17 yo -  have been waiting for there to be a time for me to join them at the movie theater. I wanted to see Dr. Strange...and I enjoyed it...though I've not seen Spiderman and I guess that was a prerequisite. LOL  We caught the matinee and then had just enough time to grab a quick dinner and head to the church for youth group and Bible Study.

We Did a Thing

Spring colors

We aren't celebrating Mother's Day until this Sunday. The thought is that this allows all our Gherkin mom's to have their private day with their kiddos, and allows our lovely in law children to be able to celebrate with their Moms.  However, I did give Bre and Arielle a gift certificate for a pedicure for Mother's Day. It took a couple of weeks but we scheduled the outing for this afternoon. I dropped the girls off at BreZaak's and picked up Bre and Jojo. Arielle lives next door and Cory was home from work.  We stopped for drinks and headed to the salon.

Ah, the relaxation. Time to connect...and OH...those massage chairs! LOL   This was good.  I've not gone for a pedicure with friends, or daughters, since Misawa, Japan. I left Japan 9 1/2 years ago. I plan to work this into the budget and schedule more often.

Jojo was not sure at all about this lady messing with Mommies feet.

In the end he decided it was o.k. and enjoyed chilling out with Mom.

My earliest memories of pedicures are from Bislig, Philippines with Gracie Potes. It was a big deal in Japan and Korea as well. I can't seem to recreate the Japanese Onsen (bath house) quite yet, but this I can do. It is a really nice shop and we had a good time. They only have 4 chairs so I am going to HAVE to go again when Carrie and Krista book their outing. After 9 years my feet can use the extra pampering.

Spring = Bike Rides, Picnic, Chicken Coop and Seeds

 Shew! A  multi-post day!

Back at home the girls asked if they could go for a bike ride. We agreed. They packed a picnic lunch while we got the bikes down from the garage ceiling. Michael also checked tires. This was the first ride of the season.  I'm proud of them for taking photos! Yes, of course, Allie has, and wears, a helmet. She must have whipped it off before the photo.

The river is beautiful. I laughed when I saw where they'd ended up. Michael and I walked, sat and talked in the same spot during our respite hours yesterday.

May I just say a ukulele on a picnic after a bike ride is brilliant!

Grandpa has been sleeping a lot the past few days. We saw his doctor yesterday and they are checking his iron levels. They suspect we'll go in for iron infusions. Today he began complaining of nausea too and slept 90% of the day.

While he slept, Michael worked in the chicken yard and coop. I love a clean coop.  The hens responded with five eggs. LOL

I took advantage of the hours to plant seeds. This is an inside job  - so Michael could be outside. I planted 535 new seeds. I filled the grow cart and moved a couple of trays out to the greenhouse. I'm hoping they'll be warm enough to germinate. If not, I'll move them inside????

I covered them with plastic domes

The starts I'd moved to the greenhouse are thriving. It's time to up-plant quite a few of them. That will be the job for the next couple of days.  I mentioned while I drove the girls over to BreZaak's that I hate gardening. WHAT?

Allie said she was sure I loved it. I told her I like a bit of food stability. I don't really like gardening.  I spent most of the afternoon and this evening (while planting  another 100 seeds) asking myself if I really dislike gardening? What DO I enjoy about gardening? I LOVE watching things grow. I love sitting in a garden with a drink. I love watching sprinklers water a garden. I love an excuse to be outside for long hours in the summer, rather than doing housework.  I do not like weeding, planting for hours at a time, weeding, hauling manure....but maybe I do love a lot of aspects of gardening. It sounds like I love to watch a garden more than I love all the hard work...but then the hard work is therapy. Many a prayer has been spoken in my garden. Many an idea has been wrestled through and situation surrendered in the garden. I think I may love gardening after all.  I'm still thinking.
The melons are finally germinating.

Kabocha squash

Beans are looking good

Delicata squash

I have not planted even one zucchini! Stacia informed me today she LIKES zucchini. Maybe I'll plant ONE...just one. I do not need to supply our church, the Russian church and the neighbors with zucchini. I do know it will grow well here and I'm not sure about the Delicata and Kabocha.

Michael and I spent some time discussing the merits of leveling vs. terracing the wildly sloping garden spot. I think we're going with terracing as he told me we'd have to start all over to level the area...and it would result in bringing a bunch of hard packed dirt to the surface as well....

Maybe I like gardening because it is a never-ending source of conversation and it's always changing....always something new to discover.

(Maybe this should have been two posts).

Boy Baachan (You know - like Boy Mom)

Tuesday mornings mean.....picking up a "surprise" for Arielle and dropping by to play with the boys while she goes to work at her church.  Benny had EXCITING NEWS today....he has a new bicycle helmet and Cory took the training wheels off his bike. Of COURSE we had to finish breakfast and go for a walk/bike ride.

This boy can RIDE. He managed gravel, pavement and grass. As we walked I remembered a little neighborhood "park" with pavement, a basketball hoop and grass. We headed over there so Benny could ride to his heart's content and I didn't have to worry about traffic.

This park is down an alley way and is bordered by backyards of houses.

I loved watching the boys play ball together....Benny and I played HORSE...hopefully the first of many fun outings.

Benny made quite a few baskets. I quit counting at 5.

Danny was NOT going to be outdone and figured out a way to make his own baskets.

Bubbles! Simple delights.
Check out their expressions

We continued our walk down a new to me road when we left the playground. We walked/rode up a big hill and found ourselves at the "Hippo park." I THOUGHT we were going to stop and play but it became quickly apparent Benny had a different plan.

"Watch, Baachan, I can ride down this hill."

"Benny, I don't think that's a good idea."

"I can do it..." and he was off.

I gave chase...trying to catch him before he reached the steep decline....and then Danny began crying. I thought he was upset by how fast the stroller was going. He wasn't. He'd slid out of the stroller. I picked him up, strapped him back in, and took off running with the stroller down the decline.

"Benny, pedal backwards."

"Benny, stop before you reach the street."

We don't say, "Be careful," we give helpful instructions.  I must admit, parenting 5 boys, "be careful" became a fall back. We have learned to think of the steps we want them to take rather than telling them to be careful - which gives them a sense of danger but no clear-cut idea of how to deal with it.  Later, talking the event over with Arielle she said it is ok to yell, "Stop."

Um...yeah that was the word I was looking for.

Benny was excited about his accomplishment and thought he'd do it again.

"No, Benny. Baachan doesn't want to do that again."

"I didn't hurt my privates!"

This Baachan was perplexed.  I told him we were going to play at THIS park and we were not going to go back to the hippo park or ride down the hill again. He agreed.

Danny appreciated the tamer pace of THIS park over the mad dash down the hill.

Back at home we decided to cuddle on the couch and watch some cavorting pirates on Disney. I had hoped Danny would fall asleep. Arielle got home before he could fall asleep.

I knew Arielle would be fine with the boys and I going for a ride/ walk. I think we'll keep doing that now that the weather is nice. We all loved it. I shared about the mad dash down the hill, losing Danny, and Benny's perplexing comment.  I knew she'd laugh - and she did. Arielle shared he'd had a bad wreck a couple of days ago and HAD hurt his privates. Evidently, all activity is now to be judged by weather it hurts and if it doesn't, it's safe.  ::snort::

I do miss having a houseful of little boys...these two haven't started throwing bricks into trees yet...

Random Glimpses of the Week

Michael and I snatched a few minutes after one of Allie's appointments to do a wee bit of celebrating. This is our first time inside Dairy Queen since 2020. LOL  Please note it is Allie's hand and blizzard in the foreground. I am not holding two blizzards...and also note they are minis. I am hoping it doesn't tank the A1C test later this week.

Michael, De'Etta and Allie

It's getting real! The banner and yard sign arrived.

CoRielle walked down to a local coffee shop to do a bit of celebrating on their own. LOL

Millie loves play time with Stacia

I suppose I am going to need to spend a bit more time gardening and less time reading in the greenhouse very soon. LOL

I was SHOCKED to see gas jump from $4.09 to $4.71 (and this was AFTER my fuel rewards were applied) in less than a week. I need to find out which day of the week gas prices rise and fill up strategically. LOL

We've done a lot of driving this week. The cost is high, but the girls are getting lots of practice driving around town.  Allie finished up her gig helping with a short film created for a high school class. Stacia had several babysitting gigs. Allie worked with Lady. Food co-op was this week. Lifegroup was this week. Michael had a couple of appointments in Anchorage.

I was thrilled to get one walk in the midst of a busy week...walking may be smarter as gas prices rise.

A cart like this can only mean a BBQ is in the planning...

And when the cake decorating tackle comes out....it is going to be a party. In this case we spent time this week prepping for Alliebration - our celebration of Allie.

The girls and I ended the week by going to see Aida last night at our local community theater. It was a blast. Allie gifted me with a night out at the theater for my birthday in January. It didn't work out with friends and  we decided the three of us would go! It was a fun ending to a hectic week.

We are two months into Lifegroup and I'm realizing I need to be sure we don't schedule a lot of out of the house activity and appointments on the weeks we have Lifegroup  and Wholesome Food Co-op (2nd and 4th Tuesday and Thursday).   Simply being aware of the heightened pace and scheduling accordingly will relieve stress around here.

Stress?  Check out our favorite stress-relivers. They're growing fast. Millie is doing well with them. She simply ignores them...and we are always sure someone has a hand on her when we open the brooder. These guys love to fly out into our faces as we attempt to change water, shavings and food.

The Barred Plymouth Rocks are getting so cute. They have a much more "in your face" personality than the Golden Bovans. We've called them our little ninjas. they love to run and fly at the others.

Dominion

Check it out! Note that while the sun rises and sets at the big bolded times, it is actually light for an hour on either side. This is the time of the year when keeping up with inside chores gets harder. Outside chores are screaming for attention. All the snow is finally melted around our yard.

And so, a new week begins.
