Second Sunday in Advent - The Bethlehem Candle

They told him, "in Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: 'And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah: for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.'" (Matt. 2:5-6)

The name "Bethlehem" literally means House of Bread. It was not one of the great cities of the world. It was not even one of the great cities of Israel. It was, in fact, one of the smaller cities. It was known as the "City of David" because it was the home of King David. He was the youngest of eight brothers, the shepherd boy, and the son of a man named Jesse. He was not known for anything, but it is in the wisdom of God that He would select an unknown to be king. It is also in the wisdom of God that He would not choose a great city such as Rome or even Jerusalem as the place the Christ would enter into the world. It was not in a great palace that the King of kings would come. It was not even in the home of a peasant. Instead, the Creator entered into His creation at the little town of Bethlehem, through a virgin named Mary, as a babe lying in a manger.

God constantly uses the littlest and the least to demonstrate His power and faithfulness. The following Scripture readings emphasize this characteristic attitude of God.

Monday - I Cor 1:25-30... God chose what is weak...

Tuesday - Phil 2:5-11 ...but being born in the likeness of men...

Wednesday - II Cor 12:7-10...for when I am weak...

Thursday - Luke 9:45-48...for he who is least..

Friday - Isaiah 9:6-7 ...For to us a child is born, to us a son is given...

Saturday - Luke 1:7 ...and laid Him in a manger...

Deja, we didn't find your parents.....

A Very Full Day

This was a very busy day. I'll simply post glimpses.

This spouse from FT Hood was fun to visit with. I got a new appreciation for how TOUGH it was to be a military family at the Fort in the 1800's. I'll try to keep this perspective during our upcoming move. LOL

Tea Brick - cool - they'd grate a bit of tea into a mug of hot water and there you had it.

Zander was most impressed with the cannon and the green backs.

We happened into the school trips, before it was really open to the public....but many of the re-enactors enjoyed giving us specialized instruction and history lessons. We heard many times, "we can tell you are a homeschool family" - and they seemd OK with that. ::snort::

Sneaking Away to the Book Bank!

Shhh....don't tell Mike. He thinks I'm still at rehearsal. I snuck away after Act 1 and will go back in time to see the end.....I've been assured I'll be back in plenty of time. I know - I felt a bit guilty leaving, but I noticed that many parents seem to come and go. AND I didn't watch every baseball, basketball or football practice come to think of it.

This has been A DAY! I was up to my elbows in chocolate (because that is how I bake or paint) when the computer alarm went off. I thought, "hmmm must be 30 minutes until I need to have Jared at House of Faith."

NO - it meant I should be at the base in a meeting. I was late - but made it. Then started the Thursday shuttling from spot to spot. I'm so glad this is ONE day of my week and not every day of my week. ::snort:: Piano lessons went well for Arielle and OK for Nolan. We made it by a speciality store to buy supplies to make a treat for the tea - now we only need more time. I picked up Jared at House of Faith and had time to go through the drive-thru and get Nolan to practice. Now, I relax.

Today's directive was...
