Is There a Nurse, Dr, or Experienced Mother in the House????

When we've had stitches before the wound has always been "flat" and "together" when the stitches were removed.

The thought they would take these out at four days and didn't. They took them out at 7 days...but check out the photos below. The skin is puckered, we've been putting hydrogen peroxide and antibiotic cream on. It sizzles with the peroxide. Jamin works raw chicken. He hasn't been lifting weights and would like to - but I'm nervous about it.
Does this look right? Should I take him back to the ER again and have them restitch it?

All of our kids have had stitches and I have never seen any of the heal that way. Hmmmm . .I would be tempted to have it looked at again!

Yucky... That happened to me after my second c-section. The skin just did not grow back together in the right place. If I remember right, they just asked me to keep it clean and dry and be patient. It took a long time for my hole to close up. It was big enough to stick a finger in! It shouldn't look angry though. They didn't want me to put anything on mine (but it was a lot bigger). They did have me take antibiotics.

De'Etta,
It doesn't even look like the butterfly is on the right place. If anything, I would redue that with a new one. Any open wound is susceptible to infection. I would be leary about getting raw chicken juice in there. Hope this helps.

Sis:

It will probably heal with a nice scar. However it is angry looking and with him getting raw chicken junk on it that may be causing the angry look. The butterfly is not over the hole. Is it over another bad spot.

Might not hurt to contact your doctor for maybe some antibiotics.

OUCH!

De'Etta, if you and Mike are concerned about it, I would have it looked at again. If for nothing else than just for peace of mind given that Jamin does work with food.

I worked in the E.R. and the surgery clinic and none of the wounds I ever saw looked like that more than 7 days post op.

I just asked Wayne (who is a nurse) to look at the photo. Even if the wound isn't draining, because of the location of the wound and because of Jamin handling chicken, Wayne thinks he should get it checked. There: free medical advice. :::grin:::

I would have it looked at again, however, they probably will not re-stitch, but allow it to close by secondary intention. If you use peroxide, cut it 50/50 with sterile water or normal saline if you can get your hands on any. I had 2 holes at the ends of my c-section scar last time, and that is all they had me do with it....and keep it clean and dry. If he is handling raw chicken, I would send a box of exam gloves for him to wear, and then he should put a food service glove on over the latex one just to be extra sure it all stays clean dry and bug free. That way the powder/latex is not in contact with the chicken either. He should change gloves often and allow time out of the glove to keep it from sweating too much.

FWIW,

I think there could be a little cellulitis that is keeping the incision from healing all the way, which would also cuase the angry redness. Keeping it clean and dry is high priority. I would definately have a doc look at it just to be sure.
