Today, I tried something new, again. I let Nolan sit in on the history books for lower grammar (he's a 3rd grader so technically this is a good fit). This gives Zander someone nearby and it gives Nolan less text and more pictures. Nolan joined Arielle and I for the literature and the core history of Upper Grammar. Rather than continue reading "Pyramid" by David Macaulay to Nolan and Arielle, I asked Arielle to read it on her own. She is happy to do that and Nolan is happier with less technological info and bright photos. LOL
Today we actually had time to visit the Internet links in our Usborne Internet linked books. Cool. We went on an Egyptian Animal Safari. We took a quiz on Egypt and watched a slide show on farming. We wrote our name in Hieroglyphics.
Stacia fell asleep while I read "A Place in the Sun" to Arielle and Nolan. We'll pay for it later, but we were able to read ahead a bit and make our simple step pyramids. This project comes from the book "Ancient Egyptians and their Neighbors". I think this may be a TOG book, but I got it from the library. It's great in that the projects are simple and work will with a variety of ages. That said, Jared and Zander both opted out of making a pyramid. What am I going to do with the extra boxes of white sugar cubes? We don't use them any longer. LOL
Well - school is done and I'd best get moving on dinner. I'll update more about life later tonight - if I get a minute.

De'Etta, ooo, ooo, I know! I know what you can do with the extra sugar cubes! Make ziggarauts for week 9! Sounds like a fun school day!
::snort:: Show OFF! ::snort:: You must be a fellow TOG user who began schooling earlier than I....OR you are a fellow TOG user who has read AHEAD to see what is coming.
Thanks - I'll put them in a ziplock and save them. LOL
LOL We started earlier and we're on week 9. :)
I'm impressed that you're able to blog about school already. This is our 2nd week and I still haven't had time to finish blogging about our summer (LOL), however, I AM very close to having most of the rooms in my house back in order! When that's done I should be able to find some time for other things!
Now wasn't it you who couldn't find sugar cubes for your teas? And now you have to many. LOL
De'Etta, you are doing a great job tweaking things to suit your family. I'm still working on it...maybe we homeschoolers are always tweaking?
The sugar cube pyramids look great. My boys made more pyramids and Anna Grace made one also. lol
That was by far one of the easiest projects we have done!!

Cindy - I'm committed to blogging our day and school is about all we are accomplishing. We are schooling from early until about 4:30.
Jen -
YES - that was me. I also had ladies from the chapel and homeschool group looking for sugar cubes. I was originally told there was no market for them but since that strange run two years ago all the stores are carrying them. ::snort::
Debbie - yep, each year is different. Schooling with a toddler and K is always a challenge for me....I simply need to be more creative in our use of time. This is why the older ones begin to do more and more on their own.....because it slows them down having to wait while mom plays duck, duck, goose with the 2 yo. ::snort::
Laura - it WAS easy.....
Sis:
HIDE the sugar cubes!!! You know who will delight in using them secretely while we visit. I'll consume them all for you. They make great picker-uppers too. :):)

Funny about your tweaking. Seems Emma prefers to read all the read alouds to herself. She consumes them much more quickly than a chapter here and there with the younger siblings around. And this past year, I started doing more parallel theme picture books for Erik and Ellie while Emma read what was 'scheduled'. You're right, we are so similar...yet so different LOL.
I've found myself dreading many of the Macaulay books like this: ships, pyramids, cathedrals. (Oops, can I say that?)
Do you have other TOGers or a hs co-op to which you can donate the extra cubes? Or maybe the kids will want to do it on their own for fun, since the cubes are just there anyway?
We're a few months ahead of you in history (not in TOG, mind you!). We read The Wadjet Eye and A Place in the Sun (Holly only on that one). I'm currently reading The Bronze Bow to Holly, which we are enjoying. I think Trevor would have liked it too, but it seemed too wordy at the beginning . . . as he and I are getting through the very wordy Wind in the Willows . . .
Well...Mom....if I make it to week 9 as scheduled we'll have used up all your sugar cubes for art projects and you'll be forced to try Agave Nectar or Rapadura. Muhahahaha
Deja - beware of TOG...you are sliding into it - you've been warned. ::snort:: I was using SL and then found our own picture books to go along with what the older children were reading....and then I found that Marcia does the work for me. LOL
Those Jamin posts are ME - We're setting him up with a blog and I'm going to have to remember to check who used the computer last. ::snort::
Coming in late since we were on "holiday" in Italy. John (7.5yo) and Theresa (9yo) are using TOG UG this year. Sometimes I read aloud, sometimes we take turns and sometimes they read silently. And we break up the reading so that we don't have to tackle an entire book in one day. ONly finished with three weeks of TOG Year 1
