We are using the Ancient Far East kit from Hands and Heart. This is one homeschool product that totally lives up to it's billing. Each kit comes with everything you need to do the projects (down to the paper towels and styrofoam cups for paint). There is a wonderful CD that has all instructions, tons of notebook pages, and MAPS (wonderful maps from Knowledge Quest - same ones used by TOG) which can be printed as wanted. I printed it all out to use and store. Each project has clearly written instructions, a bit of the history of the area, notebook ideas, and a section called "lighting the path" which ties Bible in to the project. I won't be doing all the activities listed in the kit. I'm using it to supplement and add hands on fun to our TOG.
We have been attempting lap books this year, but the kids really seem to appreciate these sorts of hands on things MORE....and they keep asking why we aren't making a history quilt this year. Maybe I'll count one finished as good enough for this year and save the next 3 for our next cyle through ancient history.
Painting fish is serious business for Zander.

And Nolan...

Arielle's prints

They want to dissect the fish - we shall see. I've about had all I want for one day of dead fish.

Very neat! Thanks for the review. I've been contemplating ordering these (whether they were worth the money) but I'm like you--I don't have the time or inclination to go looking for dead fish and rice paper. :::smile::: Looks like everyone had a good day. What about letting Mike supervise the dissecting or one of the older boys if they have the time (could count towards their science too)?
Oh, one more question: did you order any of "additional student" kits or have you found one to be enough?
Cool! Thanks for sharing this! :-)
Wow! They turned out great! I need to add something like this for Chase. School has gotten so serious with Landon on his highly-academic high school track!
Michelle,
I did buy two extra kits to use with 3 - 4 students. I'm not sure I NEEDED too....but it's been handy so far.
I'll use today as an example...if we had one kit we would have had 2 pieces of rice paper for 3 kids to use so I needed that, I probably didn't NEED 3 fish - but it was nice for everyone to work with their OWN fish and their OWN colors, I didn't need the extra brushes. I ended up with one thing I didn't need and 2 or 3 things that made life a lot easier. If all the projects go like this it will be nice to have the kits.
It looked like so much fun today that I thought I should have bought a kit for ME to use. ::snort::
Linda - the boys are serious high schoolers...but we need to have fun! LOL
This does look fun. Although I'm not sure I'd want to do the dead fish one I should look more closely at the various kits to see if one will be a good fit for us next year with ancients. I think you, or someone, mentioned before there are two or three to choose from which could go with Tog 1.
Jodi - there are also kits for Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece/Rome.
Those are beautiful prints!
That looks like so much fun! What a fun kit!
