Book Review: *Morality For Beautiful Girls*

by Alexander McCall Smith

This is another of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series set in Botswana. It is also another one of the original books on my Spring Reading Thing List.

Obviously, I find the Yada Yada and the Nursery Crime series to be "funner" reading...but every time I pick up one of these books I find myself really enjoying it by about chapter 3. I guess they start slow for me. LOL

In this book Mma Ramotswe solves more problems...both her own and others. Mma Makutsi shapes up the two apprentices and the business at Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors, as well as solving her first really big case...finding "the" beauty contestant with morals.

This quote, so appropriate to Africa could also be said of W TX: " She knew that it was the perfect country - all Botswana knew that - but it would be even more perfect if the three hottest months could be cooled down."

Precious Ramotswe has the "perfect" storage place for importnant papers and checks...making me wonder if Mom learned this trick while living in Africa. I'll have to check. ::snort::

You're up WAY too stinkin' early, thinkin' deep thoughts......I haven't gotten past whether I'm going to make regular or decaf coffee this morning! ;)

P.S. When DO you have time to read, by the way?!

I am glad I am not the only one who feels this way about these books. I do like them, but, like you, it takes a few chapters to really get into the book.

I read when I put Stacia down for naps.....

I do get up early but that's usually Bible Study but sometimes I read.

I read at night if Mike isn't home from work and the kids are down.

I also have enjoyed these books very much. There is just something about them. I can "feel" the pace of Africa.

I've read all but the last one and am now working through them on audio. If you have the time and inclination, they are very enjoyable to listen to.

I started on the first of this series, but I stopped reading when I wasn't into it. Maybe I'll give them another chance now that I know they get better as they go on.

Debbie - do they read with an accent?

Yeah- I started the series and didn't like it. I got desperate for something to read over the winter and started it again and thought "this is slow" - I'd read the first chapter 3 times ....so I skipped it. I found Ch. 2 still slow but then it picked up. Actually the fist book was my least favorite.

De'Etta, the woman who reads them is from South Africa, so yes, she has an accent, but I'm not sure how it compares to Botswana.
