Spotty Season

For the FIRST TIME in nearly THIRTY years Michael locked me out of our room last night. I went up and the lights were out, the door was shut and locked. I knew he was tired, fighting a bug and preaching this a.m. so I slept downstairs...but this house is SPOOKY when you are sleeping alone downstairs. ::snort:: I didn't sleep well.....finally called his cell phone this a.m. to rouse him when knocking wasn't raising him. ::snort::

Stacia woke this morning a bit feverish and itchy. She often has little quirky aches and pains.........

but I took notice of this.  They've grown throughout the day. Her tummy, back, shoulders are covered....but they are small...not sure what it is. Many suggest this has something to do with the hot tub. I'd tend to agree - but it's ODD as she's in the hot tub all the time, the chemicals were fine.....she's never gotten this before. Chicken Pox would be odder as we can't figure out where she would have been exposed to it and we were told her shots were current in Misawa. I'll be checking.  She and I stayed home from church.

We are due to leave for Jamin's college graduation in TX on Tuesday morning. I will try to get in to the doctor tomorrow to make sure we are good to go.  She and I took advantage of the extra time to put out some more decorations.

We moved the Japanese nativity set and put the Alaskan set Krista made us on the ledge above it. It wasn't until we were all done that I realized the Alaskan set moons all visitors to our home.

Michael and I captured some time for a trip to Walmart. We needed to buy a DVD/VCR combo as  much of our school and movies are still Video - we'll have to give them up shortly - but not yet. We also did our shopping for our Advent Scavenger Hunts. We will be gone for eight days. I've been gone for five days. We obviously won't get 25 days in....or maybe we will.

We ended the evening watching The Muppet's Christmas Carol - a decades long family tradition for the day after Thanksgiving...we're a bit delayed this year...but we're getting it done. LOL

I'm praying Stacia wakes up tomorrow spot free and we don't have to work a clinic visit into our already chaotic schedule, and there is no question about her and I traveling to Texas.

Christmas Already?

It is cold! It's been snowing all around us - just rain and cold here. BUT cold enough I put on my Yellow Yokota Sweat shirt.  I woke up missing Japan...It's normal to wake up thinking of Japan on Saturdays as Saturday is the day the kids meet on Webex with Ryu and Kim to continue their Japanese lessons. This ugly yellow sweat shirt was purchased while I waited with two special ladies (Susane and Erika) at Yokota AB for the all clear to travel north after the quake and tsunami. I pondered the season when I learned to Dance in the Rain...learned at a gut-level God could be trusted with the Gherkins when I couldn't get to them and knew they were in danger. The week God dealt with deep fear in my life.

Stacia woke up and tried on her flower girl dress. She hadn't even combed her hair. I'm not posting a picture as I'm not sure BreAnne wants a photo posted....but I love that Arielle HAD to get right to Stacia's hair...here she sports "Princess Elsa's Coronation hair" from Frozen.

Michael prepared for chapel today. The kids and I had one goal - get some Christmas Decorations up before we have to pack for TX.  We took leaves off the Thankful Tree....

Michael joined us for a few minutes

UM - CONTRABAND - not sure WHY they packed this -  must have been with our Christmas books.  It was fun to find unexpected Japanese fireworks in with the Christmas books.

We have an excess of Christmas decorations. We didn't think so before we lived without it all for four years. ::grin:: However, we left many things on the shelves today. I don't think we'll get outside lights up. There isn't time before we leave and it doesn't seem worth it to do it for a week. I found this and it made me LAUGH all day. I think it would take care of the "dog problem." I could blast "Silent Night" or "O Come all Ye Faithful," when the dogs begin barking at 0200. ::snort:: I won't do it - but it's fun to think about. LOL

We opted to re-purpose the Thankful Tree.  into a Jesse/Adorenament tree!

Our little tree

So happy to have purchased this last year....there are times when a memory from Japan surfaces and almost takes my breath away. It made me smile to see this.....praying for Japan as we prepare to celebrate Christmas here in America.

Arielle and Nolan made a quick dinner of crepes. They like to do that. We ended the night soaking outside in the freezing cold....steam, warm water, bracing cold air....ah....it almost feels like an onsen in Misawa.

A Great Friday

The kids and I went to see Frozen this afternoon. What a great movie! Finally, Disney has gotten it right.

A true act of love is not a swooning kiss and  doesn't often strike like lightening.

Love grows from friendship.

A true act of love is looking out for another's best at cost to yourself, putting others before yourself, SACRIFICE! I can't believe Disney finally came out with a movie that portrays a biblical view of love.

The only drawback was choking on $9.50 for an afternoon matinee. OUCH.
We left the theater and went Christmas shopping for Texan Gherkins. Maybe we'll be ready to leave for TX by 0400 on Tuesday. Maybe.

I dropped the kids off at the house, started pizza, picked up Michael, dropped Arielle off at Matt and Rachel's and then we went out to dinner with Matt and Rachel. It was fun to connect in the midst of this busy season.

It was a full Friday.

Culture Shock Aboard Amtrak

We caught a ride to Eugene with Krista after Thanksgiving to help with wedding prep.  Obviously, we needed to figure out how to make the return trip. I planned to rent a car. It would be about $200 for the 3 of us; but the passes are iffy this week. I checked into Amtrak.  $252 for the three of us....no worries about icy road conditions.  We have ridden trains quite a bit in Japan - we like trains. I bought tickets.  The train station was cute and adequate. Amtrak employees were helpful and friendly.

I was excited to ride the Coastal Starlight. This train runs from Seattle to Los Angeles along beautiful coastal areas and passes. Unfortunately, the only time it LEAVES Eugene is 5:00 p.m. - so it was dark during our trip. ::snort:: I'm thinking I need to ride the train from here to Eugene next - in daylight hours.

However, the similarities between train travel in Japan and America ended with the station (and there were differences there as well). The trains themselves are very different. Amtrak was MUCH slower than the Shinkansen. It was also a bumpier ride. We were an hour late arriving - something which never happened in four years of train travel across Japan.

Shinkansen - Bullet Train
Amtrak Coastal Starlight

The seats were NICE. Stacia reminded me of her Uncle Nate as we sat down. She began taking her seat apart...which caused me alarm...until I realized she'd figured out how to pull the bottom of it out so that it was like a recliner! ::snort::  There are electrical outlets at every seat. This is much more overhead space for luggage than in the Shinkansen. There are dining cars (which we didn't try) and a big empty room under our car where folks spread out sleeping bags.  I DID miss train employees going up and down the aisles selling snacks and drinks.

The girls and I have shared many laughs about our culture shock on Amtrak. After this fourteen hour trip, I do NOT think allowing folks to use their electronics throughout a flight is a great idea. The train was NOISY. The man in front of us talked on his cell phone for hours......plugged in so it never went dead. I learned how he was stealing money from a church to open a bar in Mexico....and later that he was just messing with the person on the other end of the phone?  The lady in front of Arielle had 26 boyfriends before she married her husband - and she didn't really WANT to marry him. He's dead now - life is good. These are a couple of the  personal details she shared with the stranger who sat beside her - a gentlemen.

We had downloaded a season of Cake Boss on to my laptop - the girls enjoyed watching movies and then sleeping. The website and signs all over both stations said, "Wi Fi - Why YES" but there is no wi fi on the Starlight. I did ask to make sure.
This gal's sleeping talent proved useful
Due to the strange gentlemen behind us - I felt the need to remain vigilant....strange gentlemen? Glad you asked.....I noted him in the Eugene station and my heart sank when I saw him in the seat behind us. He smelled really bad. I tried to ignore that. One look in his eyes and I knew something wasn't "right."  I was glad to see the sane looking man sitting next to him. As the trip began he got agitated. He kept yelling..."No".... "MOVE"...."OPEN THE DOOR".... "DALE!" Fourteen hours of listening to him. The good thing is that he began to wander the train - and the train was long. That gave a bit of respite.
Not in the least bothered by the yelling behind her
He seemed to target me to yell at. I ignored him. Others alerted me  they were watching and aware. Who couldn't be aware? At one point he took off his shirt and strode up the aisle....he wore baggy sweats that exposed his bum....It wasn't a pretty sight. Arielle woke up as he walked past her seat. Her reactions are always priceless. She seems to think we Americans take individuality a bit far.  He did share he'd just been released from the hospital in Eugene.

The train stopped twice - just sat there. I heard rumors of troubles with a wheel. This agitated the man behind us.

We were glad to finally arrive. As we walked from the train to the station "the man" walked in front of us. He stopped, turned and began to yell, "NO" in my face. I noted we were close to the building and so I stood in front of him and told the girls to MOVE into the station. I knew Michael was waiting and I'd follow them. He glared and yelled again....and I looked up and saw Michael start through the doors....my tall, glowering, hero in uniform. He wasn't taking this situation in stride. The man hurried off to another part of the station. Those glowering Gherkin eyebrows came in handy.

Michael said he saw a Japanese man exit the train looking very frazzled. Poor man I understand. We've been on FULL - Standing Room Only - trains in Japan and the  noise level is subdued. People move to the bathroom areas if they must talk on the phone. People use ear phones if they watch movies or listen to music. The trains are on time. People don't parade up and down the car yelling while disrobing.

Would I do it again? Yes. I will be sure to dress in grungy clothes and pack the electronics so I don't call attention to them.....the camera was probably not a great idea.  I would ask the conductor to move us if we ever end up with another situation like this.....but I figured there wasn't much they could do.  Michael has ideas of putting the man off the train. ::snort::

It's far beyond time for a shower and a nap....then we'll start some Christmas shopping or something. It's good to be back in CA.

We have ICE on our driveway....ICE.

Just Us Guys

Sunday rolled around with just us guys in the house.  We headed out to church at the Chapel.  Pastor J did a great job preaching, we had communion and then we decorated the chapel for the Christmas season.

It was poetry of motion.  The wreaths were hung at the sides and back of the chapel. Lights were tested and then wrapped around the tree.  The big box of ornaments was carefully sorted.  Many did not fare so well during storage, but most were ready to go.  Both high and low, the ornaments were hung with care.  The angel was placed on top - a very delicate operation, I might add.  The floor was vacuumed.  We all hung out for a group picture, and we were done.

Marisha with the "ghost buster" vacuum.
Mark, Nolan and Maria sorting ornaments
Going high to put that Angel on top
 Tatiana having fun
Charvis and Constance hamming it up for the camera
 Sorting more ornaments
 Altogether now, Smile!
Alex loved being at the center of attention for the little kids.

Then what?  Well, we were pretty hungry by then.  Yup, Hometown Buffet.  We went and buffeted our bodies then a movie at home.  Nothing profound.  Just a fun day.

Michael

Sister Night

Today is our last full day in Oregon. Krista had to work. BreAnne took the day off. We went shopping for a mother of the bride dress. Sort of a success and sort of not. I have a nice dress - that was on sale. I'm not sure I'll want to wear it in February. We'll see.

We picked Dakota up from school - shoot - I failed at this grandmother thing - forgot my camera and missed a chance to take a photo.

Tuesday nights are Sister Nights around here. Bre and Krista's schedules are such that they rarely see each other, though they share an apartment. Over a year ago they began having weekly Sister Nights. I love this tradition. We were happy to be here tonight for sister night......like a date night for sisters.

Dinner at Hawaiian Time

We stopped by Ben Franklins as Bre had a wedding project she wanted to work on - going to be cute!  The rest of us found plenty of ways to fill our time. Arielle and Stacia loved the yarn....

Bre using the die cut machine and paper cutters

We all got little charms and such to make jewelry. I found the little "do hickies" that go on the back of necklaces....I want to try these on sea glass.

We settled in to watch a chic flick (rare treat for 3 of us). We watched, "While You Were Sleeping."  I booked our tickets home.

The chance to reconnect and relax together after the whirlwind of the past few weeks is a treat. I like Sister Night. Stacia has been campaigning for weekly "Girls Dates" since September....maybe it's an idea whose time has come. LOL

OINK (Only in Korea)

The kids and I traveled to Korea in June and  looked for a few gifts.  This one we thought long about. We checked the quality. We checked the spelling  - we'd witnessed  Engrish and its consequences. We bought this to surprise Michael.  It fits. His name is spelled right. It's been far too hot to wear it in CA....but last week he pulled it out.

And I noticed the mistake......OINK - only in Korea. Do you see it?

Unless they've moved, I'm pretty sure the Spurs do not live and train in San AnTHonio. It makes for a fun memory and conversation starter. ::wink::

*OINK a termed I learned from ladies stationed in Korea but honestly you can find this in the Philippines, Japan....probably many places of the world.  I'm fairly certain our hiragana is often wrong on the shirts I see in the mall.
