It has only taken 1 1/2 hours of cutting and folding for me to REALIZE that the paper cutter would probably make this go a whole lot quicker.....Some people may just not be made for this method of instruction?????
If you are doing the same one we are doing (Live 'N Learn?) than I completely understand!!!! :-) We JUST started today. We managed to get the first page done, but it may take us until after the holiday to finish. :-) Good luck!!!! -Lisa
I'm one of those strange people that actually enjoys cutting out and assembling these little books. I do them in the evening after the kids are in bed.
I THOUGHT THE KIDS WERE SUPPOSED TO DO THIS - I THOUGHT IT WAS ABOUT THEM INTEGRATING THEIR LEARNING..... BUT I think I'm seeing the end of the tunnel or something...maybe...update later....Child growling.
ROFLOL! It is a big lapbook. I got the kids to completely cut out a pigs one we did but it was much smaller and I was gearing that particular study to the little guys. I wanted it to be their work (with big sis helping). I cut out about 3/4ths of rainforest Saturday night, Hayley did some of it. It's a big one too. I feel pressure though, as if I don't review it within 20 days I have to pay for it...and we got NOTHING done today with visiting kittens here! The cutting is a big much! I don't actually mind it though, well sort of don't mind it. Yet I do want the kids involved. I here there is something called the crayola cutter being talked about in lapbooking circles.
If we don't hear from you in a week we'll come searching under the big pile of paper!
Debbie.....whenever you get the inkling to fold and cut.....you just feel free to do a bunch for me....I'll send you some paper and a priority box to mail them back to me. LOL
Jodi - I feel better knowing it is a big one.....I like this but I want it to be more of the kids project than me doing all the cutting and folding...but I guess with young ones that's the way it is....so that makes me think that most moms must do quite a bit of the work on these....I always pictured it was the children. LOL
FWIW, I know the gals in our co-op made an afternoon of cutting/folding. They all brought paper and patterns... they folded while the bigger kids watched the younger kids. They all visited while they worked and had a great time so I'm told. I wasn't able to make it that day. We've made some little science booklets at co-op where we set them out on the table and whoever had free time came down to work on them while visiting or planning. It works for me because I like to keep my hands busy while the kids work on school... it keeps me on task (LOL). Maybe you could invite some friends over for a folding party?
QB and others - Arielle and I had our own little party. LOL Yes, in the future I'll have to do cutting etc ahead of time...BUT that's my point....I want the CHILDREN to own this...if I hand them a pre folded, pre cut booklet and give them a quided question - it sure sounds a whole lot like fill in the blank teaching...on a cuter level...and that's not what I'm about. LOL
So....I need to figure out a style to use the tool that enhances my CM goals and doesn't feel out of sync.
Jodi has assured me that not all Lap Books feel quite so workbookish....
I want this to be a tool where they integrate the knowledge they've learned, they narrate it....and no pre-set package is going to really do that because it is more like "here's the questions you'll have to answer so go find those answers".....I want them to be thrilled with info and store it somewhere memorable....
I'm guessing that I will eventually fit more into the create your own lap book for narrating, dictating purposes than the "here are the questions - answers in the back - let's all make the same preplanned lap book" type lap books....but I will admit it is nice to have all the graphics and answers right there. LOL And C, it would be even nicer to have a co-op so that I wouldn't have the mounting pile of paper scraps to deal with. ::snort::
I just feel that the info the children would have picked out from our reading may have been a bit different. LOL I'm going to see how much of this they really remember.
Bottom line for me - the children have to OWN it, it has to enhance their learning...if it does....well work is a factor of homeschooling. I'll suck it up and do the work. LOL If it doesn't enhance their retention or integration of the material...well *I* don't need a new craft. LOL
All that said - I think we ARE going to love the way the book turns out.....
