Tea Thoughts

I've thought I needed to lay off drinking tea to be "healthy". I really do not care for herb teas....though with some stevia or agave nectar and a bit of cream, maybe they wouldn't be to bad...LOL Anyway, I've been trying not to drink black tea. I've been hearing that my Red Tea (Rooibos) was good but wasn't sure why. I took some time today to find some info and I'm THRILLED. It seems black tea is good for reducing cholesterol and Red Tea is really good. I found this info from several tea sites (::snort::) Bigelo, Celestial Seasonings, Republic of Tea, English Tea Store and wikipedia etc. In case anyone else has wondered, I thought I'd share.

Researchers from several countries have presented evidence that suggests that black teas, green teas and oolong teas, have a protective capability against oral, lung, colon and other cancers. Green teas especially, with more than thirty polyphenols, has a unique beneficial effect on the human system. These polyphenols are also found in fruits and vegetables and act as antioxidants like vitamin C, E, and beta carotene and may reduce serum cholesterol and the risk of heart disease and stroke.

~Tea is reported to aid digestion, strengthen the immune system, and reduce the risk of heart disease, all of which play a role in healthy aging

~ By inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol in the digestive tract, tea helps prevent the formation of unwanted clots which may cause a heart attack or stroke.

~Black, green and oolong teas contain some caffeine. Green tea, has about one-third the caffeine per cup of black tea. Oolong has about half as much caffeine as black tea. Coffee by contrast, has about twice as much caffeine as black tea.

Black tea consumption may lower bad cholesterol levels and could one day be used to help reduce the chance of heart disease for those at risk, U.S. researchers said Tuesday. ( MSNBC )

~Why Red Tea?

Red Tea has all the benefits of green tea, but is completely caffeine-free so that you can enjoy unlimited cups, multiplying the benefits from all its healthful properties without overdoing the caffeine.

Red Tea can be of benefit in common infant ailments like colic and stomach cramps.

Red Tea is completely pure, natural and contains no additives, preservatives or colorants.

Red Tea contains no caffeine and has a soothing effect on the central nervous system.

Red Tea has anti-spasmotic properties which help to relieve stomach and digestive problems like nausea, vomiting, heartburn and stomach ulcers.

Red Tea benefits the management of allergies like hay fever, asthma, and eczema.

Red Tea has a soothing effect when applied directly to the skin as a tincture or can relieve itching, rashes and sunburn when added to a bath.

Red Tea has antioxidants which limit the effects of free-radicals in the process of aging and the declining immune system.

Red Tea supplements the daily amounts of calcium, manganese and especially fluoride, needed for the development of strong teeth and bones.

Red Tea contains zinc and alapa-hydroxy acid, which promote healthy skin, and magnesium, which is necessary for a healthy nervous system.

Interesting. I may have to find some red tea. I have pretty much given up hot drinks as I quit caffiena and really do not want to get back into driking it. I will check out red tea!

The Good Hope Vanilla Red Tea is one of my new favorites. It's naturally caffiene free....and good. It's a Republic of Tea product.

Thanks, I will check it out. Where do you buy it?

Thanks for all that information. Tea Drinking is new in this household over the last year. We have tried many different types of tea. I have bee trying to drink tea over coffee as a hot drink and hearing about all the benefits of Red Tea is really encouraging.

Thanks for the info. I'm a big tea drinker, but nothing fancy...just black tea. I'll have to check out Red Tea, but I'm pretty picky about the taste. I have started to appreciate Lady Gray, which is an Oolong tea...I think.

My Gram lived pretty healthy to mid-90's. She was a tea w/milk w/every meal drinker. Her favorite kind was Red Rose from Canada?...Wonder if that was red tea?
This post was new info to me and good to read...Thank you!

Jen - the first time I bought any Rooibos (Red) tea was from Republic of Tea. Heather (local friend) put an order in and I piggy backed. Then I found two local kitchen stores that carry the brand here in town. I bet in a city as big as yours you could find a store that carries it....or www.republicoftea.com

Debbie, I've only drank a black Vanilla tea...but in the past few months I've branched out....mainly because I realized I could add sweetener and cream to any tea....and wala the herb teas are passable...but the Rooibos and Good Hope Vanilla are both really good. Hmmm...and I can't remember which Davidson one I've been chugging down. LOL I really have stayed away from sodas, coffee and tea because of the caffiene. I started drinking it more since MIke has been gone because I'm TIRED....and I didn't want herb I wanted CAFFIENE.....Last month I started making a real effort to make most my drinking red tea but now I think I'll drink whatever I feel like. LOL

Okay I read your blog each day and am amazed at how healthy your family eats. I am such a junk/processed food eater. I love my coffee (multiple shots each morning)...
I've taken one baby step... I bought TeeBaumOl (aka tea tree oil) for my toe fungus... I didn't want to take the Rx that was originally offered a few years ago because of the risk to the liver (plus all the testing they wanted me to go throught before they would prescribe it) so I'll start with this baby natural/homeopathic step

Hi DeEtta,

You thought of giving up TEA??????LOL!

We've known about those health benefits for a while here in the UK. In fact tea is marketed as a 'health food' here. {g}

BUT apparently, and this was on the national NEWS a few weeks ago{g}, all the health benefits are negated by the addition of milk. Some weird chemical reaction or something. Boo Hoo!

I hate red tea. So, I think I am going to have to try drinking my tea with lemon. Blech!

Thanks for looking into it DeEtta. I was wondering why you had stopped or thought you should stop when I asked you that awhile back when you mentioned it. I knew everything I had just started reading indicated I should START drinking tea (LOL) so I was curious why you were stopping. I'm not a tea drinker at all, but I'm going to go to the tea place next time I'm on that end of town. Anyway. Thanks for sharing your info.

I've always been a Decaf Mint Green Tea kind of girl (after my am coffee), but this pregnancy is causing me to start to turn my nose up at coffee. Might need to broaden my tea drinking horizons. Thanks for sharing your research.

OK - concisely - I drink NOTHING with caffeine - other than my black tea....so I gave it up and only started drinking it again since Mike left because there ARE some indications that caffeine triggers my migraines.....I'd rather have an occassional piece of chocolate than drink tea every day.....you know - choose your caffiene carefully. ::snort::

I still think I will need to watch the black tea for the above reason - caffiene isn't good for a person.....but here's the kicker I REALLY like cream in my tea...so I have to cut back on that and see if I can learn to drink it with none in order to really enjoy any health benefits. LOL

Bess - thanks for your recommendations - I think I'll look for them. I'm really trying to stay with the herb and Red Teas without the caffiene unless I really either 1. need a pick me up or 2. Don't care if I get a migraine - rare indeed. LOL

Renee - I ordered some tea tree oil this month from Shop Natural. I'm hoping it will help with my toe nail though I was BORN with it - have had it removed several times all to no avail..... but I know it works good to clear the sinus' so I'll use it for that. LOL

Deja - I'll look for some decaf green mint....really I HATED green and herb tea but had never tried to sweeten it....makes a difference. I've been praying for your pregnancy.

I was rereading this post and the part about inhibiting absorption of cholesterol in the digestive tract made me stop and wonder...Does this mean it's OK to have a spot of tea and chocolate on the side? Yum! lol
