CHORES

A line in our book discussion caught my attention. It said that as we mature we begin to initiate. She was talking about ministry and loving....but I instantly realized THAT was a part of the problem around here. For YEARS I've had youth that initiated work without having to be told exactly what to do. They were well trained. They were mature. I knew I needed to work on the youngers with training and have been...but the maturity will take time to come. However, the upper grammar/dialectic students should be maturing to the point that they will self-initiate a chore that needs done. I needed to sit down and spell out this goal. I did.

I trained our older children by using the "Side Tracked Home Executive" method. It worked. My home ran wonderfully for over 15 years with this method. We quit using the cards when it was second nature to do the chore right. It also became a pain to have to rewrite cards every few years when we changed homes.

The cards DID work! Instead of saying "clean the kitchen" I had 10 cards with specific tasks on each one. There were other cards at lunch etc. I had cards for EACH room. Each chore was broken into tiny steps....it worked well. Specific little steps for each job...we were well trained and working together well. Even the smallest child coud find ONE card to do to contribute.

Two years ago I realized that I'd not taken the time to be sure the younger ones were learning things as well as the older ones. This was discovered when the girls left home. ::snort:: I took specific steps to fix this. I now ask the youngest child possible to help (instead of the oldest) and so am training the youngest at all times. I pair a younger with an older for chores. That worked.

Now the two oldest at home are working long hours and taking many classes. Time to readjust. During the school year Arielle, Nolan, and myself handle meals, clean up, and laundry during the day so the high schoolers are free to work. I knew we'd need a summer schedule...but now with Jamin working....we need a total revamp.

Mike and I have talked. I really dread the card thing again. BUT I know that having each job clearly spelled out was key. He loved the way the card thing worked. He understands why I dread taking the time to make all the cards. I have a plan.

I want to have a main chore list. I then want to have a list for each room. On THAT list I want to put specific jobs. I want to laminate the charts. The little ones can't read...maybe clip art would be good....or maybe I'll simply type it all out because my system is built on the olders mentoring and training the youngers.....in other words Arielle could read the next job to Zander, I could read the next job to whoever.... This sounds like a lot of work but....

Before I had an index box for each person. I had zillions of index cards for each job and person.....I can do this list thing...it would be easier.

I have searched online for something like this and am drawing a blank. I don't want a chart that we X off when a job is done. I want a chart with each job listed for each room. Has anyone seen something like this?

We once had a felt chart w/felt pics and a spot of velcro on the back. Worked well when I had only one child. Can't remember the company that made it. I'd place on the board the five pics I wanted done and as he completed them he would move the pic to a designated space for it on the board.

You're idea is great! I want to get back to doing similar w/my three.

Could you take a digital pic of the younger children doing the task, and use it as the picture cue w/caption of what it is underneath for the ones who can read? (Making the bed, loading the dishwasher, laundry folding, washing, etc.?) Sounds like a lot of work. I hope there is something pre-made out there to find.

DeEtta,
Have you looked at Managers of their Chores from the Maxwells? www.titus2.com I don't know if that is what you are looking for or not. Atleast you have the cards to PRINT off, instead of write and it has picts on it. Just a thought

I think, if I understand what you want, that this is what I did for each of my rooms. I just typed up a paper for each room, listed each thing that had to be done in that room for it to be clean, then taped it up in that room.

For the kitchen, I had the list taped up above the sink. In the bathroom, I had it taped to the bathroom mirror. Every room had a list, even the laundry had a list taped to the washing machine!lol

I agree with Beth, that if you want photos of each chore, although some of the photos seems somewhat subjective, you need to get the MOTC. I have it if you would like to look at it.

Blessings,

Lisa

De'Etta, that is a great idea! I have documents that I typed up in Word that says something like:

The kitchen is clean when:

and then I list, step by step, what needs done. I taped it inside the cabinet door.

The same for the bathroom, taped inside a cabinet door.

For the laundry (although I really don't let anybody mess with the laundry other than putting it away) is taped to the top of the washer.

Etc., etc.

That training is exhausting, but oh so worth it.

Maturity...I'd like to see that in 2 of my boys. One of them has that down pat. Sees his job and does it. We're working on that over the summer. That and the precept study about Discipleship you talked about. I need to get that ordered.

I've found that the boys are in such high demand working for others, that it is hard to have them home to do their chores. And when they do get home, they are exhausted from all that manual labor. It's good for them, though!

This is a terrific idea. I need to do this!

I have the SHE book, but have never managed to impliment it. When it was just four of us, I could handle most things with no trouble, now with seven, I am drowning!

Would love to see what you come up with. Sorry I'm not much help.

I did the SHE method for a few years but that was while the kids were too little to be of much help. Now they have a chore rota stuck to the fridge and 4 chores a day. It is going up to 5 in Sept.

Do you attribute the initiating thing to the SHE method or just emotional maturity? Maybe it's time I got back to my SHE box, though like you, I'd have to completely re-do it.

We noticed the same thing here 3 years ago when dd1 started her job. We really needed to lessen her load which meant all of the younger ones (and myself) had to pick up more of her chores.

I never did use the cards after reading the SHE book (which I really liked). I had a typed up list that was on a clipboard that was hidden (out of sight of company basically.. not hidden from the kids of course) in the room. Anyway.... what would be nice about you typing it up is it can change easily when you move, but at least some of the basic things will stay the same.. how to clean the toilet or the sink for example.

I'll have to see if I ever moevd a copy of mine over from my older computers.. I'm thinking I probably didn't though.

Beth - checked it out. I don't really need a whole book or system. I LIKE the SHE system - it works well..... I just don't want to rewrite all the cards. LOL

I'm looking for prewritten lists that I can download and adjust.

I do have the SHE book and will have to simply make my own lists....I'm guessing.

DeEtta @ Courageous Joy said...

Lisa and Kelly - yep - sounds like what I'm wanting to do.

Nah - the initiating is maturity, I think. The method though taught them exactly HOW to do a job, made it easy and manageable for all to help.....but to do it without being asked....that comes with maturity....LOL Shoot I know nameless adults who don't clean unless they absolutely HAVE too - though they know HOW. ::snort::

Cindy - if you DO have a copy please email me with it.

I may simply type them up. I've said all along I'd like to have the cards on the computer so that when we move I can easily edit. I didn't like cards all over the house when the kids were working - but with the rare exception the cards DID make it back to the box when they were done....and if I had the cards on computer I could print any that didn't surface.

Basically I WILL get it on comptuer - not sure if I'll do list (which could be rather long for little ones to deal with) or cards. I think you can now buy cards from SHE - I should check - maybe that was in my dreams.

DeEtta,
I think I found what you are looking for. TWO places. One is:http://www.donnayoung.org/household/index.htm Click on Home. These are done in Word and you can adjust.

Another is www.organizedhome.com Click on Printables, and then click on Spring Cleaning. This one has a list for EACH room of the house.a

DeEtta @ Courageous Joy said...

Beth - I'll check out your links today. I skimmed donna young but I'll go look more carefully. LOL

If you don't want cards all over the house why don't you try the list for each room? Clipboard or small notebook in each room?

DeEtta @ Courageous Joy said...

Beth - yep - I rechecked and nothing at Donna's is just what I'm looking for.

I LOVE organizedhome.com I laughed when I saw her thing about a household notebook - this is what my big notebook that I created last fall is...and I could have used her cute forms instead of making my own....next year. LOL BUT her chore charts would be cute for me to fill in and I may use them - because they aren't "lists of small steps" and that is what I'm looking for.

I'm being lazy. Thing is I had the idea of what I want and I figured SOMEONE out there has already done it - I just have to figure out who. LOL

I found this at http://www.avirtuouswoman.org/notebook/kitchen.pdf

She has a detailed list for kitchen, fridge, stove, bathroom, Bedroom. I don't think there is a LR one.

I would love to see yours when it is completed! ;>

Jamie, yes these are the types of detailed lists I want. I can't believe how many SITES are out there that I've never seen. Of course SHS and blogging sort of monopolize my internet time. ::snort::

I had a hard time navigating this site. I looked around a bit to find a "notebook" page so I could see other forms and didn't have any luck - but it looks like a fun site and I did save the kitchen, bathroom lists.

I love the site organizedhome.com. I used many of her forms when I made our "Family Notebook". Her forms were perfect for what I was looking for!

Thanks so much for sharing both of these websites.

From virtuous woman I was able to print inventory lists for the pantry and freezer! Yeeeessss!

I also found kitchen, bath & bedroom cleanings lists!

From organized home I found helpful checklists for vacations.

Thanks ladies!
