Biking thoughts....

The weather was cool this a.m. Curves doens't open unitl 10:00 on Saturdays. Mike was sleeping in the room with the exercise videos. All lined up for a BIKE RIDE. LOL

As I was biking, I began to think of a couple of things. Help me out here!

1. You know all the wonderful Pampered Chef recipes? Thinking of the rings here....what would you substitue for crescent rolls if you wanted to make a ring from scratch. I have food for the fellowship hour tomorrow and was thinking....... LOL I love my PC recipes, but haven't used them much since we changed our eating style since so many are made from highly processed foods.

2. Texas Pride
I love Texans. Wonderful, friendly, helpful, salt of the earth types. I'm not so crazy about the scenery, bugs, or HEAT (one season - summer) of TX.....but Texans really, really love their state. As a military family we look for "state" mementos to take with us when we move. I love the ease of finding TX mementos....but as I rode this a.m. I was struck by the pride folks down here take in their STATE. Tiles on their houses that say "Texas" (in case you forget where you are?), stepping stones in yards and gardens in the shape of the state, cast iron signs on houses that say TX or are shpaed like TX, huge tomb stone like stones in the shape of the state planted in the yards.....this was only a 20 - 30 minute ride. I love that Texans love Texas. I have heard from several military kids that it is TOUGH to NOT be from TX and attend the schools (public and private) around here. But I love the pride in TX.....so I'm not dissing TX - it just made me go "hmmm" and then "huh". I also noted that Texans are inordinately loyal to the colleges they attended....

I've lived in many states.....I loved Oregon. I loved Montana. I really loved Alaska. I don't remember seeing the shape of the state in lawns, on houses, children's notebooks, bags and purses... tell me is this common in the state you live in - or is this uniquely Texan - or have I been totally unobservant everywhere I live? Note this is not a random house here and there - many, many houses down here are decorated with shapes of the state.

Now what should I do about snacks tomorrow?

I have to agree that the shape of TX is used there more often than any other state I"ve lived in (CT, VA, GA, IL, AL, FL).... maybe it's the unique shape of Texas???

Nope, not common here in OH. Most people that live around me (me included) do not enjoy living here. We are here because our family is here.

The weather certainly isn't worth staying for unless you ADORE winter and gloom and rain and clouds most of the time LOL.

The jobs certainly are not worth it since there aren't any! Doug drives to IL for work. Three times a week! Thankfully they pay him to do that :)

And, on the PC recipes. I'd maybe use a low-rising whole wheat bread recipe with soft white. It won't be flakey like that, more like a stuffed bread I would think. But I bet just as good.

I like the idea of PC recipes, but always change them around.

I have a wonderful sausage/broccoli (I use turkey sausage) stuff bread on my blog somewhere that uses bread dough. It is YUMMY with tomato soup or cold....so I bet would work for your gathering.

Growing up in the south (including Texas)and then duty assignments...there is a lot of southern pride....no shapes of Alabama but confederate flags, *heart of dixie* sayin's etc., Hawai'i has lots of stuff. Here in PA, since it's large and diverse (Amish country, coal country, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia). Lots of people are diehard Penn State fans (groan) so there's lots of that stuff.

Egg bread has almost the same texture.

My Dad is from Texas and you're right it's the only state that has that much pride.LOL

Sis:

In all the many states Dad/I traveled while itinerating...... none had state shaped stuff... Only states we were never in are RI, DC, CT, and states only at an airport are HI, and ND.

Kinda neat the pride Texsas shows.

anyway I have SO much to do today. New sub-teacher until Jan/Feb 08 can't yet keep up with teaching, grading, computer entering etc so I am VERY busy. Lots of papers to correct this weekend so they are entered before the first grades go home to parents. I always think is is funny to see how hard and FAST the kids get work done when it is a do or die situation. :):)

so bye and love/prayers

is something else again

We have found that DeEtta. My parents bought a Texas ice cube tray when they lived down there and the kids love to have their Texas ice. We tried to find a Missouri tray now that they are up here and we can't. Who but Texas would make state shaped ice? LOL.

And I have also been wondering about the pillsbury thing. I have the same problem with wanting to make old recipes that use that processed dough. Waiting to see what you figure out.

Jen - we also have tx shaped ice cubes. We had thought we'd pick them up in every state we lived in....thought it would be fun for holiday dinners and such...but we couldn't find MT or AK shaped ice....I'll have to do some more searching...we could use OR too.

Julie Z. has a crescent roll recipe that you could definately use. I'm lazy and once a year when I make that kind of thing, I buy the bad stuff. But if you want to try it, I can send it to you, or you could call her.

Becky - I need that recipe. I can try Julie but between her busy household and our busy household it takesn a while to "connect". LOL I'll remember to try. Thanks for the tip.

I've lived in California. Can I say there didn't seem to be a lot of pride there?

Colorado. Who would KNOW if you owned a Colorado shaped anything, it'd look like a SQUARE!

Virginia. It would look like a whale. And you can't carry something made from moonshine. (And *I* can say that!)

Definitely makes me think of the bumper sticker, American by Birth, Texan by the Grace of God!

De'Etta - my mother and her siblings were born in Texas (although raised in Minnesota) and went back to TX every summer. In their Minnesota home they had a large wrought iron outline of Texas. When my grandmother sold her home, she moved from MN to TX and lived there until she died.

The only decoration she allowed in her retirement home was a HUGE (think full length 8 ft by 10 ft) map of Texas. I thought it was wonderful! :)

Kathy - I agree there is something charming about state pride....I really dont' think I've seen it in any other state. AK probably comes next but then we were in ANCHORAGE and that is tourist heaven...so the things we saw were more geared to tourists than residents.

The only downside to the pride, as I mentioned, is that the youth aren't always welcoming to youth from "outside".

Oops - I should say that as an adult, I've not experienced the whole "you aren't from TX - we don't associate" thing. I've found Texans to be welcoming, and hospitable.....but then adults aren't still looking for their own identity....usually. LOL
