Reading Anyone?

I am quite sure that Zander is not going to sit still for the bells and whistle phonics program that has helped five of the children learn to read. Bre learned with Abeka. Jamin was JUST LIKE ZANDER and got so fed up with the phonics program that we laid it aside. He then picked up Calvin and Hobbes and taught himself how to read. I'm not sure HOW - but he's written a 300+ book so I guess he's got the whole LA thing down fairly well. ::snort:: Seven children that now read with varying fluency.

I am thinking Zander will be a lot like Jamin and not put up with a bells and whistle program. Today in the mail I received a gift from an online friend of "Teach Your Child to read in 100 Easy Lessons". Sheri, a local friend, has loaned me "Reading Made Easy" by Valarie Bendt. I have Alpha Phonics. I checked out "The Ordinary Teacher's Guide to Teaching Reading" by Jessie Wise. I'll be comparing and reading about reading for the next bit of time. ::snort::

I'm currently trying to decide if I want to teach him letter names or skip it and teach sounds. Josiah was reading fluently before he decided he needed to know the letter names. Really - you don't NEED them to read - only to spell and answer questions in Sunday School like "How do you spell your name?" ::snort::

I would be of the opinion to only teach letter sounds, but I would teach them all at the same time, a, A, ah, for example, for the letter a, instead of one sound at a time. The letter names will come, but I don't see the point of teaching them now. :)

DeEtta,
Go for the teaching of letter sounds. He needs those to read. He will can learn letter names at a later time.

Mmmm....I didn't use a reading programme with either of mine.

I did teach letter sounds, but we also did lots of reading together and fun (sound) games.

Dorothy - that is exactly what we did with Jamin and where I'm going with Zander. With our first - 3rd I was SURE I needed to do it right or I would mess up my child. We did Abeka with number one - tried about 5 programs with Krista (dyslexic) and then did bells and whistles with Josiah.

Jared and Arielle just fell into the bells and whistle program - and liked it.

We did bells and whistles with Nolan because really we have been more focused on speech than reading...I wanted to do SOMETHING but knew not to push the phonics until we got the speech working better (on the advice of two therapists). SO....we dabbled with the bells and whistle program but are hitting it "hard" now - not real hard as we don't do the spelling or writing portion. LOL

I know this little one isn't going to want years of bells....he's a give me the facts type of person. LOL

Yep.. if he wants to read I would skip the letter names and go with the sounds. I'm with Kristine on teaching all of the sounds at the same time. I wish I had known about that back when our 2nd was learning to read. Nathan already knows quite a few of his sounds from just listening to us review the SWR flashcards.

oh..and the only other reason I think they need to know the letter names is for passing eye examinations (LOL).

Kristine and Cindy - would you teach the rules as to when you use each sound all at once? That seems awfully confusing to a young child. Or do you mean just teach them the sounds and then explain the rules as they need to use them. Why would you teach them all at one time? Is this a SWR thing? LOL

Cindy - we ran into that with Josiah who didn't know all the letter names until 3rd grade but could read WELL by 2nd. LOL
