Photobucket Saturday - Shew

Mike helped me adapt the military survival kit that I found downtown. The lady didn't have a spouse kit, or a moving kit....and she told me they weren't copyrighted....so we made one. I'll post that later.

We had a farwell for Jill at Olive Garden. It was a fun afternoon to get together with PWOC ladies...but sad as well as it was a farewell. We gave Jill an ornament from TX (Merry Christmas y'all) and a military spouse kit - and lunch. LOL

Mike had gone to the office to prepare for Sunday at about 11:00. The plan was we'd be home at the same time. I knew that was not to be. LOL I ran to Home Depot and priced lumber for my garden. I ran to Hobby Lobby - wanted to see if they had a cricut - they do. LOL I realized I'd not been in HL since BEFORE Christmas...wow, I HAVE been busy and it's not doing hand's on school or we'd have been in there. I need to evaluate priorities again.

I came home and baked. I need to take dessert, bread, and salad to a farwell potluck at Chapel tomorrow.

I ground wheat and kamut.

Perfect..... These will become Whole Wheat Garlic Dinner Rolls.

As they rose, I began the sponge for Chocolate Rolls and made Ooey Goey Krisper Bars.

As the Chocolate Rolls rose, I started the sponge for 7 grain bread.

As that baked I cleaned up. I listed to Royal Diaries - Elizabeth I as I baked.

Zander played Zoo Tycoon.
Photobucket
Jared, Arielle and Nolan played Risk. Jared also put together a new yard storage container we'd bought...but the composter beat him.
Photobucket
2 1/2 hours and we have 4 loaves of bread, 4 doz garlic dinner rolls, 3 1/2 doz chocolate rolls, and a pan of Ooey Gooey Krisper Bars.
Photobucket
Mike is home....time to get showers and ready for tomorrow.

WooHOO - Mike put the composter together. Now I need to find manure. I'm fresh out of horses and cows around here.

Hi De'Etta,

What type of grinder do you use for your grain/bread? It looks like it grinds and mixes, is that correct? I am very interested in making bread from whole grain that I grind myself. Also, your bread and rolls look really yummy, as do the bars. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks,
DebM from SHS (BTW, I mostly read SHS messages, in case you do not remember my name--:-))

Sis:

WOW! ALL your fresh baked breads etc look so good and inviting on this April 20th in Spr., Oregon where it has been snowing since 4:30 and we have a nice bunch of wet 1-11/2 inches of snowman material.

Deb - the mill is a Whisper Mill - you can see it here http://www.urbanhomemaker.com/ProductCart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=0&idproduct=1227

The mixer is a Bosch http://www.urbanhomemaker.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=225&idproduct=2184

Mine is the old one - but I would love the new one with the suction feet....we may attach some to my old one. LOL

De'Etta -
Thanks SO much for posting those recipes!!!! Oh my goodness - they look YUMMY! I am chuckling a bit because I seem to love ALL your recipes.... we had "De'Etta's Moosewood Refried Beans" yesterday. :)

I also have to chuckle because I don't see how you do it all! I bake bread, etc. to sell on Wednesday's and Friday's and end up pooped! YOU do that amount for your FAMILY!! I have thought of you before when I am tired on my baking days... and it spurs me on!!!!! :)

Ah, thanks, Laura. It could be they are good tasting because I don't share the failures. ::snort::

I don't do it "all" you know that, right? I really am behind in baking. I like to have loaves in the freezer so will proably make another 4 to get ahead. That way when I don't have it in me to bake we still have some whole wheat bread....not as nourishing but better than the brand I buy when I don't bake.....and I've not baked for a couple of weeks. LOL

P. S. Those garlic rolls are a hit. Jamin and Jared both told me they'd "appreciate it" if I made them often. LOL

DeEtta,
Do you have the recipe for your rolls? How do you get them to look like that (how do you cut them, etc?)

Thanks
Beth

Beth - I had the wrong link in the entry but fixed it. Click right above the photo of the dough in the Bosch.

Cutting - divide dough in 1/2. Then 1/2 again. You have four parts (each part will make 12) Cut in 1/2 again and then 1/2 again and make 3 rolls from each blob.....

Hi again De'Etta,

Thank you for the links to the mixer and grain grinder. One more question, do you purchase your grain locally or online?

I definitely want to do this because we could really save a lot of money with how much the bread costs that we currently get at the store ($4.69/per loaf here in Western WA at Whole Paycheck, I mean Foods ;-)) and it is not even made with organic flour. However, it is all natural. My DH and I figure we could recoup the cost of the grain grinder in a relatively short period of time.

Thank you again for all of the info, I really appreciate. Also, if you followed my link to my blog, I really am planning on updating it. LOL, yes it has been almost a year.

Hi Deb, Maybe I should do a WFMW on this topic. LOL

I buy my grain from Wheat Montana. Our group puts in a giant order once a year. Last fall it was $11 a bag and the freight was free...they have gone up. You can also order online. I like Prairie Gold (hard white - high protein) best for all my "all purpose" baking.

Yes, we did the math and we recouped the price of our mill and mixer within 6 - 12 months. My mill was used, $50. I didn't have the mixer for years.....but am glad to have it now. It kneads better than I did. LOL

The mixer looks really great, however, I do have an older Kitchen Aid mixer w/dough hook so rather than buy something new I want to see if what I have will work. I also have a bread machine, but it only makes one loaf at a time, and I like the idea of making several at a time so that I can freeze them.

Wow, $11 a bag with free shipping, that is really great! I did not see a price that low, but I am not doing a large shipment as you did. I have one site (Honeyville Food products http://store.honeyvillegrain.com/) that offers $4.49 shipping to anywhere in the continental U.S., but the grain prices are quite expensive. And then another site that has organic grains for less than the previous site but I am sure I will pay an arm and a leg for shipping. I will definitely have to do some research to figure out where will be the best place to purchase the grain from.

Thanks again,
Deb
