Dentist Visits

Our day began with an early trip to the base. The LAST two dental appointments for a year. Well....not really. We still have some work for Jared, Arielle and Stacia. The main exams are over.

Mom, thought you would get a kick out of her refusing to open her mouth for the x-ray.

She informed one and all that, "Purple is NOT my favorite color."

Dentist watched Zander play for a bit as he worked on Stacia. Then he said to me, "How can we work with his autism during this visit?" It always surprises me when someone picks up on this so quickly. Most think he's stubborn or rude or.....but those who work with kids and know nothing of us, often peg him immediately. Oh well, that's our life. In a strange way it's assuring to know that the "experts" can tell that he's not just ornery. ::snort:: We continue to be very comfortable with his progress.

The dentist was great. He asked Stacia to quit playing the crocodile game, turned down lights, turned off music....all to help with Zander's sensory issues. I was amazed. When all the distractions went away...and the doc softly sang songs while he worked....Zander did well. The dentist said that he is putting in Zander's chart that he should be cleaned every 6 months, because obviously prevention is going to be much easier for him that enduring the work with his sensory issues. I was soooooo happy.

Krista had come with us to the dentist. We ran a few errands and headed home. We had big plans in the offing.

Bre is home!
Krista is home!
Jamin and Josiah will be home in 1 day!

Our 3 go to the dentist Tues. I'd welcome prayer for AJ. He has sensory issues too.

Sis:

How neat that the dentist was an informed one. Will be great for Alexander now and in the future.

I love that Stacia was reluctant to open her mouth. As old as I am it takes me a moment or 10 to open my mouth when I know the neddle is next. :):):):):) I'm dragging my feet now since our dentist retired.... :(:(:(

enjoy the family...... know you will. love/prayers --- Mom T.

what a wonderful dentist.... considering the ADA recommends cleanings every 6 mos and that's what our insurance pays for when we go off-post, it's always annoyed me that we get less care when overseas.

What a blessing that dentist must have been to you! Are you only allowed a cleaning every 12 months? I had to cancel the kids 6-month cleaning last week because of the job situation. Hopefully, Greg'll have a job before the next 6 months roll by!

How nice that the dentist was so attentive to Zander's needs.

We have two grandchildren with Tourette Syndrom who have sensory issues also. It always helps when those other than family recognize this. How fortunate to have a dentist like this!

We have military insurance - well - whatever. We are allowed a cleaning every 6 months...but when we are overseas we only are allowed a cleaning every 12 months unless the denist requests more often. This means that kids do end up with more cavities (at least that's what I'm hearing) and they really lecture you on care once a year....but the doc knows that it is hard for Zander to endure those long cleanings...and work....and with the sensory issues teeth have been hard. He WANTS to be a BIG boy and brush his own teeth. Stacia brushes hers alone and had no cavities...but he isn't doing a great job. Dentist said he can do it in the a.m. and Mom or Dad get to do it at night...he really gags and such when brushing his teeth...but it must be done. I was very relieved to hear that they'd check every 6 months for him.

A good dentist is better than gold when you have an autistic child.

It seems like you're having a similar journey to us. I was both upset yet relieved when people started noticing Trevor's autism before I told them. It's difficult that people notice so easily but makes life easier when they lower their expectations and don't comment on the quirks (or think you have a naughty child thus bad parent).

What a wonderful DDS. I love it when we come across people who are willing to go that extra step for someone. So glad you have him.
