I'm feeling like a....

USED CAR!!!! Today was my dreaded "annual appointment".

To begin with - my girls seem to be right. They've been telling me all along I wasn't 5'4". I thought I was 5' 10" and was sure I was 5'4". It seems I'm 5'3". I made them check THREE TIMES! LOL I did them this really throws my height/weight ratio off and the ticker is going the wrong way.

The doc says that I'm one of the few who have fun at my yearly appointment. I informed her that I really wouldn't call it fun. Ok - to spare graphics but my lady readers KNOW what I'm talking about. Since WHEN did they decided that starting classical music at exact crucial moments would RELAX a person? ::snort::

She asked what form of birth control I'm using and I told her I'd finally found one that was 100% guaranteed. She's Catholic....she's been very supportive of my many pregnancies...but she's also been trying to get me to find a "reliable" form of birth control - sort of because I seem to be wearing out and need to loose some weight. She was very skeptical of what I was going to tell her but I assured her that I'd found a 100% reliable, church sanctioned method after all my years of marriage. She smirked and said, "Ok - what?" I told her deployment...she checked my chart and said "I see that's what you put in your medical record." We had a good laugh. ::hiccup::

She asked if we'd be staying an extra year because of the new AF regulations. I told her yes and that my first thought had been, "I'll get to have another baby with Dr. X". She and the nurse thought that was very funny.

We discussed various conditions and ailments. She added another surgery that would need to be done "when I'm done having babies". I told her that since the surgeries were adding up, I thought I'd just go ahead and keep having babies. ::snort:: She told me one of the ailments would go away or get better when I hit menopause - can't remember - oh the fibroid cysts - and that maybe I really did have something to my plan.

Then she told me that I needed to have diabetes and thyroid checked yearly. Oops. I told her I KNEW that the clinic would agree to that but that I'd not asked for it and they aren't going to call me to remind me. She said that the statistics say with gestational diabetes you will develop adult onset diabetes in 10 years and my child is now 12. She agreed that I seem to have a way of beating the odds but that I'd best get it monitored yearly anyway.

Like I said, I feel like a used car. Check the oil, change the tires and good to go another year.

HI:
Neat to have a doctor that can also joke around with you. I like my "lady" doctor for that reason. Fibroids took care of my worries and guess what? Not such invasive yearly exams.

As far as beating the odds...... that's you alright... or is it faith?

LOL At least it's over for another year. It's great that you have a good doctor. I'm still praying for one of those.lol

I just got my reminder card in the mail that it was that time of year for me too. I need to make my appointment. Also, I never knew that if you had gestational diabetes that it could turn into diabetes. I was borderline with one of my babies - I wonder if that counts?

Ugh! I really, really need to go see my dr. Shall we say it has been more than a year, or two, or three! Yikes!

Glad it all went well.

You are so funny! It sounds like you have a good relationship with your doctor. I am supposed to have mine in Feb., guess I should make an appt.

Hmmm, once again I was going to say something else and now I forget. Ahhh, well...it'll come to me at 2 am :)

I'm with Debbie on this one... the years go by too quickly... I think my annual appt has gone the way of my annual Christmas card/letter - every other year or longer (LOL)

Mom - it is my understanding from several docs over several years that fibroids are not a problem - as in pre-cancerous etc unless they are causing you trouble. Mine have a few symptoms but having them removed would make miscarriages far more likely - so there is no need at this point to have them removed or talk hysterectomy....according to all.

Emily, it's not that it turns into diabetes but I guess it "predisposes" you towards adult onset. Frankly, I've made so many diet changes that I think that is why it hasn't come back...though I'm always borderline when pregnant.

Why does it surprise me that you can make even THAT sound like you had a good time! I'm up for the turn in the shop in a few weeks... what joy. lol

Want me to share the questions with you so you can begin to come up with fun answers????

Maybe you can take your own music to play when they "commence the exam". ::snort::

DeEtta, Personally I would not call your doc Catholic. A true CAtholic would not suggest abc :( I guess she leaves her faith at home while working .
I like your answer to birth control on the sheet... my last appt I just said "none"... I figured that was easier than once again explaining that yes NFP does work..... well at least it has for almost 7 years... never know when a surprise could be bestowed on us

LOL - Ah Renee, I wouldn't even begin to judge who is really Catholic and who isn't. I've been surprised how many Catholics do use ABC....because I get lots of comments from Catholic parish members at each assignment.

My current doc is one of the best I've ever had. She suggests but doesn't push. LOL She also is intriqued by me. When she asked "Do you want more children" and I said, "I'm content with 9, but I would love to have more" - she was perplexed. She and her husband are both from very large families...12 and 7 I think.

My position is actually different than the Catholic church in that I don't use NFP either. I simply trust that God will send the children our way that He desires for us to have. I think NFP is easier for docs to understand. LOL I usually put "none" but knew I could joke with doc yesterday. LOL

So you would say the ABC issue is a defining issue for practicing Catholics? Someone explained to me that some church laws were absolute and some weren't and it all confused me...but she was saying that the large family issue was really up to each family. It's always interesting to me to hear what others faith believes.

Most folks figure if they were baptized Catholic (and don't go to another church) they are Catholic. Which is fine.... but it seems to me if one is going to be a member of a faith group that they would believe and try to follow the beliefs of that faith... kwim?

unfortunately abc seems to be the norm among most Catholics :( I think you will find it almost non-existant among homeschooling Catholic families where they accept the children as God send them or use NFP.

Judging?? drats, I am so bad about doing that.... I need to stop that.... slapping myself on the hand for playing God :(

I LOVE that description! I just went to my annual appt. about 3 weeks ago and I dread it every year. Now I just have to make an appt. for the mammogram. Ugh!

Renee,

Can you tell me - because you would KNOW this - is the CAtholic church's stance on ABC one of the "absolute" teachings? I can't remember the right Latin words. But isn't it like one sort the Pope declares and it is absolute and one is a strong suggestion? Just a Protestant trying to make sense of this one.

I've had strong reactions at various assignments. Either very supportive or sort of the head shaking WHY would you do this. And I want to say "Goodness YOU ARE Catholic - don't you understand why we do this?"

Your comments about homeschooling Catholics cleared a LOT up for me....because I'm thinking the Catholics we've run into at various parishes who are very accepting of our convictions ARE for the most part homeschoolers. LOL

You know it sounds like this is another one of those Big Family myths....All large families are either Cathoic or Mormon and all Catholic famlies will be large.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts...and I knew you weren't "judging" but I tend to slide into juding if I'm not careful....for me to determine who is and isn't a true Catholic would be a judgmental attitude on my part.

Diann,

She began to order a mammogram for me after my exam and I said, "Oh no - I already had two last month!" LOL

I just read a link off of another blog today. Turns out that 96% of Catholics use ABC. :( I knew the number was high but never realized it was that high.
I'm going to have to look to see if abc is an absolute or not.... but as far as the pill and IUD, it is because both can cause abortions and that is a sin (no if ands or buts about it). But so many folks choose to not learn what it does to their body or a very new young life. :( (heck I was there early in my marriage)....

If you read the reasoning behind the Catholic Church and abc, you as a protestant would see the sense in it... the reasoning comes from the Bible (and other church documents).... I will have to find my book and get you the scripture verses that the Catholic CHurch uses to say no artificial birth control.. and just for anyone else that might be reading, NFP is not required. It is an option available to couples that want to regulate the births of children for serious reasons (and that reason can vary from one family to the next)
