Day 7 - Crescent City, CA - A Tale of Two Campsites

I did not nag. In fact, I was content. ::snort:: However, it became apparent that our trailer is not set up for "real" camping. The fridge quit working. I have no clue why....but it wouldn't cool. The battery totally died yesterday. We charged it with the van and it died again BEFORE bedtime....no lights, furnace, fridge, water pump.....not a big deal when we packed for camping....but we have no warm blankets, no coolers for food, no containers to haul water.....and so...

Mike went and checked the horse pasture. They had room. They give a military discount. We are set. They ALSO have coin showers...but we have water hooked up to the trailer so we can shower that way.

Our first campsite was gorgeous....

Our second site is also in a very pretty setting. We have a field for Frisbee behind the trailer, you can see the ring of mountains...all in all a very nice horse pasture it is. ::snort:: We are chuckling at how our views have changed...from "gee WHIZ can't they even get along without their electric for a weekend" to "OK - let's camp in the horse pasture!". ::snort:: Really, it all comes back to how you are packed. This has convinced us to keep one of our tents, one of our solar showers and such. Look how close our slide out is to the concrete divider.

The younger four love these dogs that are across the field. The dog was better at Frisbee than the children. ::snort::

LOL, you are learning the ins and outs of camper camping!

One thought on the frig. Bri says it has to have DC power even if it is using the LP...something about the thermostat and controls, so that might be the frig issue.
We do not run our furnace when we are on battery...runs it down very quickly, but we always have plenty of warm blankets. The nights can get very cold in the northeast even in summer. We have invested in a Marine Deep Cell battery.

The scenery is gorgeous there and everyone looks like they are having a wonderful time.

(Hope I'm not insulting Mike by making these suggestions.)

No - you aren't insulting us - you've been using a trailer far longer than we have.

We DID have to run the furnace even though it would run down the battery because we didn't have extra blankets along. We didn't run it the second night and the next a.m. Mike moved us out of the park to a set up with electricity. He was talking marine deep cell battery - so that is confirmation that a new batter will help.

I'm not sure if he did whatever Bri mentioned about the fridge....but I'll check. THEY told us it could run off propane and battery - but it didn't. LOL

We are having a great time.

I think there was a button I used to have to push on our old camper's fridge when we had to go from propane to electricity. Not sure about our new one though. And, I do know that none of those things will run long on a battery. My parents have a generator in their camper, but we don't yet. We're thinking about getting just a small portable one instead of an installed one. It *IS* a different kind of camping for sure. We don't really "camp" in ours, we live in it when we're working.
