FREEZER UPDATE

I SWORE last time I defrosted the beast that we'd buy a new one before I did it again.....but I'm not sure we will.... We've begun to look at freezers. We've always had a chest freezer (21 cu ft) until we bought this one used. It's about 16 cu ft and isn't big enough. But I LOVE being able to get things out of the freezer without leaning over the edge and needing to be pulled out by my ankles.

We aren't 100% sure which type to get. Chest (energy efficient) or Upright (MUCH easier for a short woman and children to use).

At Sears the gentlemen tried to talk me OUT of buying a freezer. He told me that no one buys them any longer. He told me that folks only buy enough groceries to make it to the next week. He tried to sell me a HUGE computerized $2000 fridge. I told HIM that I already OWN two fridges and need a FREEZER. The biggest they had was a 19.5 chest or a 20 upright.

The chest freezer had a new selling point. It is full of these plastic compartments and baskets. Does anyone else have one like this? Does the plastic last? Does it make it a LOT easier to use a chest freezer? I really did have trouble with the 21 cu feet chest freezer.
But the real selling point... is that this particular freezer comes with a few ounces of organic meat....

I am always guaranteed a laugh when reading your blog! At least that bonus protein is natural! We have been looking for a decent, small, energy effecient freezer as well. Consumer reports has had some very informative info to consider.

I do not like chest freezers and we have a very large chest freezer. I'm sure the chest freezers are more energy efficient, but I just can't find anything in the chest type.

No great help, but placing my vote! :-)

I've never had a chest freezer but some day I will be buying an upright. I would not buy a chest because it requires more floor space (not something readily available in the home of a large family) and harder to find things. I can just imagine things getting lost and forgotten in the far reaches (I too am short)

We bought ours at Sam's two years ago, and we love it. I have one divider, but it's the coated metal type. I also have two baskets that I love - same coated metal. The baskets get a lot of use. I think I'd love the compartments if I had more than one. One seems almost like they are teasing me. lol It makes you like the idea yet you can't really utilize it. It's great for things that don't stack well - like breads especially.

I hate my chest freezer. I used to have a wonderful upright freezer. I loved that one. I vote for that.LOL It really is more useable space.

Oh, add this to your book reading challenge: Man Eating Bugs: The Art & Science of Eating Insects.
My kids are just sitting around looking at it (& one of them screams with every turn of the page).

Seems like I wasted more food when we had a chest freezer in NY. I seem to be able to KNOW what I have in the freezer now that I have an upright. FWIW

We've had both types of freezer...I like the chest better. The only reason I like it better is that if the kids leave it open, it usually closes by itself. We had a lot of defrosted meat with the upright.

My SIL has a freezer with the dividers (for about a year I think). She hasn't had problems with the plastic yet.

The chest with it's baskets looks good BUT IMAGINE HOW HEAVY THOSE FULL OF FOOD WOULD BE!! NO-WAY!

We have always had upright freezers and I really can't see where our electric bills were any different than friends of ours who fought with chest freezers!

Have fun finding one. You should have seen the Sears salesman trying to tell us we didn't need the dryer we picked. Of course the other one cost more. Sometimes salesmen get an extra bonus if they sell something that is hard to sell (chest).

Goodness wonder what the guy would have said to us if we were buying a freezer when we are only two? :):):)

LIke I said... have fun. Love the natural meat.... We have quite of few of those soft crunchy natural slugs in our yard..... WOULD YOU like me to box up a bunch and send them to you to add to your natural meat supply? :)

How funny. We just blessed a family with the your old freezer as we were leaving AK... the Bibbins. They have 5 kids at home (I think that count is right) and will use the space much better than we ever did. I know what you mean about falling in to pull stuff out. Sad to say that I just left the stuff down there until it was time to clean it out. Go for the shelf system if you get another chest freezer :).

When we moved from AL to Ga, My freezer that was 31 cu ft. froze from being in storage for 6 months. So for my birthday, my dh bought me a smaller upright. My parents had a dinosaur chest that was big enough to put a coffin in it, lol, but they bought it in 1973 for $75! It was TERRIBLE and we never knew or wanted to know what was at the bottom, lol. We compared prices and found HHGregg to be the best price. They will MATCH prices! Also they have rebates on delivery, and on the freezer.

DeEtta,
Our chest freezer has metal trays similar to what you show in the picture. IMO, they are only so so. Nice in that I can load some thing on top that we use more often, but they are HEAVY (ours are deep and often filled completely to the top)... TOO HEAVY for me to lift out alone... We also have an upright freezer. It's small and won't fit all of our meet since we purchase 1/2 a beef at a time, but it's perfect for the freezer meals and other Costco type frozen things. So, I've been using both... the upright for that and the chest for the meat that hasn't been made into a meal yet. If I could only buy one freezer it would be a large upright. FWIW.

Summer - LOL -

Glad you were able to pass the old freezer on to someone else. I miss my old chest freezer...only for the funny stories it provided. ::snort:: We had one even BIGGER than the one we gave you. That one the boys and Mike were given when they helped a lady move. LOL
