Photobucket Word Press vs. Blogger

Yes, I've been neglecting you dear blog reader, family and friends. I promise to carve out some time to update by tomorrow night. Maybe this afternoon...who knows? ::snort:: I'm not ill...simply busy and working on a project.

For now, I need more input. I've been involved in a team blog that used Word Press. I've also used Blogger (um - duh! ::Snort::).

Please share with me any insight you have about how the two compare. Pros? Cons?

I am currently playing with both venues. Here is what I have learned:

Blogger is MUCH easier to add things such as God Tube videos, music, slideshows and graphics in the side bar. (Is this because I haven't worked on that part of a Word Press blog?). I've been told that you cannot add javascript to Word Press unless you pay for that feature. Is this true?

Does Word Press have the same security features that Blogger has? I'm assuming that I'm simply missing the link to the info. Blogger automatically asked me what security features I wanted.

I like the TABS at the top of many Word Press blogs, the navigation bar. I have a tutorial on how to do this on blogger...but it isn't working for me.

If I have Word Press suck up a current Blogger blog, does the blogger blog still exist or does it go away? THEN I could play with both.

Maybe, I should spring for a blog designer to make what I want and be done with it. I know for THIS blog it was much simpler to finally pay Michelle to install a template that I could then manage. Let's face it - I spent HOURS trying to design what I wanted and messed it up quite thoroughly. ::snort::

Anyway, I'd love to hear what YOU all think about using Word Press and Blogger. I'd especially like to hear from you if you've used both. Is it all a matter of personal preference? BTW don't tell me you like the "look" of Word Press because all blogs "look" different and you can find a designer to make either one "look" just right. LOL

Thanks, y'all!

No, help, sorry, but I sure hope you free up some time soon. We faithful readers are missing our daily dose of "Choosing Joy!". :-)

Do you mean Wordpress.com, or the WP that you host yourself?

Some Java scripted things are restricted on WP.com because they can crash the host. That's why Blogger can be a bugger sometimes.

Sidebars have been a bit trickier for me at WP, but then again I don't change mine very often so I haven't gotten the hang of them. KWIM?

You can add media (movies, audio, etc.) into a post by clicking on the light blue toolbar at the top when you are writing your post.

WP gives you 3G if you want to store stuff there, but I prefer Photobucket.

You can only use the templates provided at WP.com, but many of them have banners that you can personalize. Changing templates is easy, and you don't have to mess with your code. You can even preview your blog to see if you'll like it.

WP can slurp your Blogger blog, but it won't erase the information, it just copies it over.

When your on your WP dashboard, look all the way to the right side for Settings. Click that and look for Privacy. You'll have three choices; open to anyone including search engines, block search engines but allow normal visitors, or invited viewers only.

HTH!

I don't have any advice to offer, but I'm so glad you asked the question. I've been using blogger, but just today was looking into wordpress and wondering if I should try it out. I look forward to hearing what people have to say!

I transferred my entire blog over to wordpress when Blogger was being such a pain with their transformation (and growing pains), but I found the wordpress not as easy and nice to play with. I ended up deleting the WP blog. But you can move your entire blog over there (I think it will take all your archives too), and you won't lose your blogger blog...I just came back to mine and picked it right up. I'm just more comfortable with blogger, I guess.

Jen - you are always a fount of info.

I'm still debating. I have been talking with other WP.com users and it does seem that some of the things I take for granted with blogger are not available on WP.

One comment stood out to me in our discussion. She said that WP looks more like a website and blogger looks more like a blog. Well, I'm building blogs not websites....

I am going to slurp the blogger to WP.com and see what I think. Thanks for assuring me that it won't all go away. THANKS for pointing out how to switch security settings.

Linda,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I set up a personal WP.com blog years ago - but it never worked for me - wouldn't let me IN. ::snort:: I do think it may fall back to personal preference - and how much time you have to devote to the project. I need easy! LOL

Though I have decided I need to be looking for some adult ed classes in photoshop, web design etc.

Debbie - YOU MADE MY DAY! I've been blogging in my mind right along but that doesn't really save any of it for prosperity, does it? It simply makes me neurotic.

Hmmmm.....that thought could make a blog post. LOL

No advice from me. I've only used blogger. I will add that it is sure nice to have a blog designer fix it all up the way you like it.... considering the amount of hours I had spent trying to do that myself compared to the fee a designer charges and how quickly they can do it.. no comparison!
